It is inflammation of the larynx (voice box). It is mainly caused by virus and treatment depends on type of virus affected. Even serological tests will help to identify the responsible pathogens. It can be treated with appropriate anti viral.
But drinking lot of fluids, sucking lozenges, gargle with salt water, breathing moist air to soothe sore throat, refraining from taking decongestants (because they dry your throat), resting your larynx will help you.
However, a side effect of both medications is laryngitis. I recently had laryngitis for 6 weeks. It started as a virus and would not go a way. I decided it was my atrovent neb (an anticholinergic like Spiriva). My allergist thought it was my Dulera (inhaled combination med like Advair). I eliminated the atrovent and reduced my Dulera and the laryngitis healed.
She needs to discus any changes in dosage with her doctor before making changes.
However I have been sick a few times since then and every time the virus turns straight into terrible laryngitis. Before the surgery I very rarely ever got laryngitis but now it comes on so easily and lasts for a while. Is there any reason that this would be connected to my thyroid surgery? Wondering if this is still part of the healing process or not? Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you!
Okay, since 1992 I have had lots of throat infections in 1995 I had my tonsils and adanoids removed to help however it never did. And still had aleast 7 throat infections and laryngitis a year but since January this year I have had 20suvere throat infections all with laryngitis.
The only problem is that I keep coming down with either strep throat, pharyngitis, laryngitis or the h flu every other month. I just recently came down with strep throat again and I'm wondering if there is anything that I can to to prevent getting sick. It as if I get it as soon as someone with as much as a cold walks by! Help! I'm tired of being sick and I know that being on antibiotics this much is not good!
As someone who is still recovering from acid reflux laryngitis, I will say that it took MONTHS for my voice to return. My laryngitis started in October 2009 and continued into April 2010 with slight improvements starting in late February. When I was first diagnosed as acid reflux causing my laryngitis, I was told it would take at least three months to get my voice back.
I orginally went to the Dr for dry cough and laryngitis. Was told I had bronchitis and was given antibiotics (bactrim). A week and a half later, I felt somewhat better. Suddenly two days later, I didnt go to the dr this time, I had sinus drainage hard core. My ears were popping every few seconds, head would pound with movement, and overall just a raw feeling in my throat. I got over that in about 5 days on my own...yay. But then got an allergic reaction of hives and swollen hands and fingers.
I wnet to a Doctor before getting on my return flight and he said he thought I had laryngitis likely caused by a viral infection. Therefore, he did not prescribe antibiotics.
It has been about 9 days since the sexual encounter and I am wondering what my risk factors are. Could the oral sex have exposed me to an STD taht would cause a sore throat and laryngitis? If so, which STD would be most likely?
I have developed a chronic dry cough & laryngitis, currently I have been dealing with symptoms for a month. I went thru same illness 5months ago was in the hospital & then passed around to various specialists without any real answers. I have done allergy testing, tests to rule out relfux, seen ENT, pulmonlogist, & family dr multiple times with not much success. No one can tell me why I got better last time, or why I am dealing with the same situation again.
My son developed laryngitis about 2 months ago. It is severe so that he can not talk at all. His ENT diagnosed it as Muscular dysphonia. He is seeing a speech therapist, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. He plays Sax in the band at school and can't get enough air out to play.
Any suggestions?

Are you sure about that 100%? I've been taking Mucinex D for the last few days and now just completely lost my voice. I've never had laryngitis in my life. I'm going to the ENT but have read there is a link to laryngitis and HSV-1.......
Also, to add I got back blood work done for HSV-1/HSV-2 and they were both neg. Blood work done on the third week of Dec. I was happy about this.

There are many conditions which can cause difficulty in speaking at higher pitches. Voice misuse and overuse are common causes. Acute laryngitis caused by allergies, viral infection, chronic laryngitis and laryngoesophageal reflux all can cause hoarseness and voice difficulties. Rare but serious causes producing these symptoms are vocal cord paralysis and vocal cord tumours.Please see your Otolaryngologist (Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor) for an evaluation.
I am still short on energy and have a lot of post nasal drip., headaches, laryngitis, very sore throat and get periods of shortness of breath. The doctor gave me a prescription for a cough suppressant. He said it's a virus. I do have white patches on the opening to my throat and the surrounding tissue is pale. I've tried a netti pot, ginger and honey tea, garlic, etc. I can't get relief!
and also seems to cause a chronic on and off throat congestion and laryngitis....I do a lot of constant, year round throat clearing. But back to the issue, my Parotid glands seem to just want stay irritated and lumpy. Its been well over a decade, and eight years since my SVR...and they still are not normal.
How many of you out there have had similar, or related issues? Any thoughts...or solutions??? Thanks for the comments!
Will this be Herpes Laryngittis/ pharyngitis? will viral Laryngitis/Pharyngitis get relief from antibiotics as I was feeling well in a day after I took them. Will Herpes Laryngitis/Pharyngitis cause no sores in the mouth, tounge or lips? Is this some kind of bacterial infection or viral infection? Any suggestions highly appreciated. I took an appointment for next week with my ENT.I see the transmission rate of 4% with unprotected sex from female to male with HSV1 genitally.
It could be due to varied causes like upper respiratory tract infection like laryngitis or pharyingitis, head and neck cancer, oral cancer, reflux laryngitis in people who have acidity and GERD, muscle abnormality, voice box abnormality, polyps, tumors or weakness of voice box etc.

restasis rx for dry eye 1/11 thurs 1/30 i started alot of post nasal symptoms by sat i had laryngitis severe by sunday went to er, they said stop restasis. viral syndrom dx. is laryngitis a side effect? i am very sensitive to all rx drugs and antibiotics , i have intolerences so did these eye drops cause this , also on synthyroid for goitors need help, i stopped the drops but i have this post tickle coughing jags no fever no rash ..
More plausible causes of hoarseness of voice need to be checked like acute laryngitis, vocal cord nodules, allergies, gastro esophageal reflux, smoking, thyroid problems, trauma to larynx, parkinson’s disease and trauma to larynx. Consult an otolaryngologist who will evaluate the causes and treat likewise. Cough suppressants for laryngitis, treat GERD, stop smoking, vocal rest etc will make a difference.

And, the examinations, treatment and follow-up of the ENT indicate that you are receiving very good care. The ENT’s assertion that you are experiencing reflux laryngitis is probably correct, notwithstanding the opinion of your GI consultant.
There is increasing evidence that GERD causes laryngeal signs and symptoms. Symptoms of reflux laryngitis include hoarseness, throat clearing, dysphagia, increased phlegm, and globus (feeling of lump in one’s throat) sensation.
After one month I went to an ENT and he said it was acute laryngitis. My voice has almost returned to normal but there is a connstant tightness in my throat. If I cough the tightness goes away for a short time. It's very obvious when I try to talk. I get choked by the tightness and cough. Sometimes even after I cough I have trouble talking because of the tightness in my throat.
I have no symptoms, but I did have acute laryngitis two months ago. Ever since then I had no symptoms, but I still feel skeptical when I see those veins on the back of my throat, so should I be worried?
One ounce of Magnesium Chloride flakes (Pharmaceutical grade) per one liter of spring water, sipped very slowly throughout the entire day.

Your symptoms indicate a viral or bacterial infection and are consistent with bronchiestasis.
If it is viral, no medicine can help, once the virus has replicated.
If bacterial, amoxicillin is the antibiotic of choice for bronchiectasis.

Restasis for dry eye, i'm 45 hypothyroid goitors i got severe post nasal drip with eye drops , ended up with laryngitis sat sun went to ER she said viral syndrome stop eye drops, i'm very intolerant to all antibiotics soo is this rare or possible, post nasal coughing when try to talk?
