Laryngitis and coughing up phlegm

Common Questions and Answers about Laryngitis and coughing up phlegm

laryngitis

Also at night, one of the my nasal passages would become completely blocked and could not be cleared by blowing my nose. Once or twice I coughed up thick yellow phlegm. Today I woke up almost unable to speak. The postnasal drip is still present, but my vocal cords seem to be covered with phlegm. No matter how much I clear my throat or cough, I cannot clear out my throat and my voice is almost gone. I am taking Mucinex, Advair, Singulair, Xyzal, and Combivent (when necessary).
Apparently fluid can seep from the back of the nose and go down the throat the brain reacts to stop the fluid going into the lungs which closes the voice box, this then stops you breathing, the brain then realises that the lungs arent working so wakes you up and that is why you wake up coughing and trying to get your breath, this is how it was explained to me. I have been told that it is not dangerous and that I will always wake up, it is just very stressfull.
I have also had it happen when I've had a tickle in my throat that wouldn't go away and my protracted coughing seized up my throat. I had to fight the overwhelming urge to cough while trying to drag in air.
I get a sore throat (not tonsils but when you swallow) I now go straight on antibiotics and use Bricanyl inhaler although it doesnt seem to have much effect except to cause alot of mucus coughed up from the lungs. It causes me to have spasm coughing and if I cannot control this to 3 or 4 coughs my windpipe closes over making it hard to breath in or out. The last one about 2 years ago stopped me breathing in and out completely for 10 to 15 seconds and I thought I had bought it.
It is accompanied by laryngitis, coughing so hard that I choke and gag, and I can't sleep at all at night. The scenerio is sore, scratchy throat, head cold, shifts south to bronchial area, tons of phlegm (yellow, then turns green if it goes long enough)sometimes high fever for more than three days, and then pnuemonia if the doctors won't prescribe anything to help.
If you are coughing and have lost your voice. That is laryngitis. The larynx is your voice box. If what you have is a viral infection, antibiotics will not help you. If on the other hand if it is a bacterial infection you will require a course of antibiotics. If you bring up phlegm that is yellow, green or streaked with blood, you will need to go back to the clinic and tell them as you may need an antibiotic or penicillin.
One the second day, my throat was still sore and coughing up green phlegm, but the stiffness and temperature were gone. I did notice that my arms were red and warm but didn't think much of it because it didn't look like the mac. pap. rash associated with ARS. By the evening I had developed laryngitis and basically lost my voice, or most of it anyway and coughing up wads of phlegm, really bad int he morning. It was like this for about a week.
What could be the problem if you are having chest pains and spitting up blood clots?
ugh! Im sorry to here you are feeling so sick. I'm not a medical doctor but here is my opinion on some of things things you mentioned you could possibly have: pneumonia: its possible, but pneumonia is relatively uncommon influenza (flu) - unlikely. You would have rapid onset of symptoms w/ high grade fever common cold - definitely possible bronchitis - not sure emphysema - not sure asthma - this would be secondary to a primary illness.
To top it off, I've caught a second cold and have a recurrence of my second cold sore this year. It's big and ugly. I cough up clear and colored phlegm. The left side of my diaphram hurts and sometimes I cough so hard that it's uncontrollable. As embarassing as it may be, the coughing gets so bad that it would trigger me to pee ( a squirt each time a hard cough occurs). ugh!! I'm only in my early 30's and it seems like my problems are just getting worse by the day.
Could I be immune to TB, if the blood I got had antibodies in it? I frequently have bad colds where I'm coughing up lots of phlegm of diffrent colors, yellow, orange , green, or blood tinged. I used to get sinusitis and or laryngitis all the time untill I started using a Netti pot. My kids have the same colds as me for a week or two, but I cough for a month or more, often just when I'm feeling better another cold starts everything off again.
after the vronchitis, had an asthma attack ended up in ER. Was admitted for 3 days. IV steroids and breathing treatments. Started coughing up mucus, gagging and choking. Told the dr that I was experiencing these symptoms, still sent me home w/7 days oral steroids. At home experienced gagging, choking and suffocation. Asthma dr who changed my nebulizer meds.I sounded like I was taking helium in. My voice was high pitched if I had a voice at all.
It is getting better very slowly. Now I have a post nasal drip and I am coughing up greenish/yellowish sputum but it's from the back of my throat not my lungs anymore. I am going to try a nasal rinse today. I was wondering if there is anything else I can do outside of what I am doing already to help relieve some of my symptoms? I have been sick for about 3 weeks and it's draining me. I get little to no sleep because of my coughing. (In addition to this illness, I came down with a UTI.
i have flem stuck in the back of my throat, no matter what i do i cant get it out, i get to the point were i throw up and its still stuck in there now my throat is painfully sore and i still have flem thats ready to come out but just wont, i cant swallow it either, is there anyway i can get ride of this flem???
Meanwhile, try one of the saline (61/2 teaspoons salt to 1 gallon distilled water) flushes from this website (the Grossan tip has possibilities) and if you get results, keep doing it for 3 days after your sinuses clear. And lay off phlegm-making dairy products and white flour til you do. I caught 2 colds again this year, with no congestion, just a raggedy throat and cough for 2 days, and no hawk spit Snot Demon.
After weeks of having bad cold symptoms and laryngitis, I was diagnosed with GERD. I was worst at night, having to sit up all night, because of an extremely runny nose and coughing and choking on the discharge in my throat. I currently take 40 mg nexium before breakfast and dinner, for about 2 months now. Yesterday, I forgot to take the morning nexium. By noon, I was having a full blown "allergy" attack.
However, upper respiratory infections can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia and can be serious all by themselves. Therefore, since your cat has lost her voice, is coughing up phlegm and refusing her food she could have bronchitis, pneumonia, laryngitis etc., and could be at risk for hepatic lipidosis I advise you to try and get her to the veterinarian ASAP.
I constantly get profuse, clear watery phlegm throughout the day at the back of my nose and runs down to the back of my throat. I need a tissue with me at all times, which I frequently use to spit into. I have been prescribed to carry out nasal douching by ENT. Makes no difference, as well as using Sterimar and steroid nasal sprays, which works temporarily but just give me nosebleeds.
I had it for at least a week and noticed that coughing wasn't really shifting any phlegm and in addition to that, I could hear rather alarming noises when I breathed, weird clogging or wheezing sounds in my chest and throat. It got so bad that I ultimately fainted [or something] on a family day out. I really have no idea what that was. Is it usual for such severe cold symptoms? I've never really had a bad cold before that, so I have no idea.
I am in my 50's, have suffered with this terrible sudden itch in throat attack--followed by terrible coughing that only stops the itch when some kind of fluid comes up from my lungs--not really phlegm, more watery--since 1992. That was when I became an active speaking minister. It feels like a flea suddenly bites one (or the other) side of my throat or maybe vocal cords or sometimes I think it feels like a big hive in my throat because it feels like a lump comes up.
I have not been on here and just now saw your note. I am still coughing and spitting up phlegm constantly. After being on Protonix for 6 weeks I am a bit better during the morning but after lunch my cough gets worse and after dinner I cough constantly until I fall asleep. I no longer throw up but the cough is severe. I think the Protonix may be causing insomnia as I can't fall asleep until 2 or 3am. I had a cat scan 2 days ago and will get the results next Thursday. (a week's wait!
I take a proton pump inhibitor called Dexilant now during the day and Ranitidine at night which controls the acid reflux and helps heal my throat, and I have reduced the amount of acidic and greasy foods and dairy (which coats your throat and makes the phlegm worse) but my throat still flares up mostly when the furnace or air conditioner is on in my house to the point where I feel like I can't breathe even with the acid reflux medicine.
It was from the anesthesia I was told ... probably with you, too, and coughing up phlegm from surgery if you weren't ill from a germ kind of thing. Congrats on the benign!
After eating I have about 30 minutes of hacking all of which is unproductive in terms of actually coughing something up. I do have the constant PND it seems and that, I've thought, is the source of the excess mucous. I think drinking water makes sense and I have had some relief drinking/sipping really hot water (be careful). I hope you will continue to keep posting your comments and experiences--there has to be a solution out there somewhere!
A chronic cough ensued, along with recurring laryngitis and pharyngitis and laryngitis, which can also occur with Cpn. I hasten to add that I would had thought these were related to viruses until I had reason to be so suspicious of Cpn. Again, thanks. You've been so very helpful ever since I first came to this forum. It is really appreciated. I will start looking into AERD now because these things take time and persistence. Take care.
She is constantly coughing up undigested food shortly after eating. The problem is an everyday accorance now and comes on when, (1) She sleeps on her right side. (2) Blow dryies her hair in the morning. (3) Gets too hot, ie sun /weather. (4) In a room with air conditioning. (5) Sitting down for too long. (6) After ever meal, big or small. She needs a constant flow of air around her, Great if you were in a windy warm country, but no good in the depts of winter in Ireland.
Add me in there to with restrictive gasp of oxygen about every 15 to 30 minutes, plus I get slight cold sweats with moderate exercise and the shortness of breath along with the coughing up the annoying lung mucus and the last thing on my complaint list is the tiredness with moderate exercise, did I mention the excessive sweating that goes with the moderate excursion, just about forgot the shortness of sleep most nights (5 to 6 hours max).
I give off some chemical that causes people to get post nasal drip, so people have to sniff and cough to clear up their nose and throat. It also numbs the sense of smell (whether it's because of the drip, or direct action of the chemical, I don't know). I virtually never hear anyone say "it smells", people just look confused because they don't understand why they are getting a drip.
I am so glad I am not the only one for the last 8 months or so i get these awful flu/cold symptoms right about when i get my period or exactly one week before, I thought it was due to taking poor care of myself because I am a college student so I am always working and studying long hours and staying up all night writing term papers but it has only started this year its truly miserable my symptoms normally consist of - sore throat, nasal discharge, sinus headaches, trouble breathing, and conge
