Lantus weight based dosing

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus weight based dosing

lantus

Avatar n tn When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
Avatar m tn I am 43 year old male with type 2 I was told by my doctor to take 24 units twice a day and have gained 25 pound rather quickly. In july of this year was told to add Novalog 5 units after every meal and on sliding scale. I quickly gained anoather 25 lbs. and I feel miserable. I was on Byetta for 1 and a half and kept weight down and was put on oral meds and my levels was still in 400s thats when I start Lantus. I can't deal with the weight diet exercise does not help. What should I do.
Avatar n tn Hi Jimmy, Premixed insulin requires you to eat on a fixed schedule, and you cannot easily change your insulin dose. Separate dosing of Lantus (long acting) and Humalog (short acting) where you inject each insulin separately (also called MDI for multi daily injections) is much more flexible. You test and adjust your basal insulin (lantus), then you dose your fast acting for each meal based on how much food / carbs/ protein you eat.
Avatar f tn and weights well over 230 pounds only takes 34 units of lantus at night and up to 16 units of humalog if he eats pizza. I have told him that the lantus dose is governed by weight and since I weigh 220 and take 33 units a day, he isn't taking nearly enough. I think he is compensating with the humalog, which runs a higher risk that he will and does have insulin reactions. I also started out taking lantus at night.
Avatar n tn I take my bolld sugars of a morning fasting and they are like 167-191, I take 1000 mg of janumet and 18 units of lantus before bed, of a morning I take 20 Units of lantus, 45 mg actos why am I having problems regulating my blood sugars, I also take 7 units of novalog after every meal??? Do you have any other sugustions??
Avatar n tn htm To me, the basic difference is variability and flexibility. With Lantus, you know exactly what you are dosing, and you also dose exactly the amount of fast acting you need. With 70/30 there is a lot extra to take into account. I personally don't know many, if any, people who are still using mixed insulin, except in poorer countries where they can't get anything else.
Avatar f tn I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
Avatar f tn My daughter is 17 and is having trouble with adjusting insulin doses...how much lantus would be a good dose to start with?
Avatar n tn I am just so tired and frustrated.....the doctor has me on lantus at night....he started me out taking 10 and now I'm up to 44 at night and I'm still waking up with 315...I stayed 315 all day aftr taking 44 last night....the doctors want me to slow walk the lantus into my system...went to ER on Sunday because my fasting Bs was 404 They are confident that my BS is going to drop..I was taking hemalog 50/50 my new doctor feels it was wrong for me...at least i had lows...
Avatar m tn I am on Lantus 40 units, twice a day. Humalog sliding scale, starting at 20 units. For every 50 mg/dl over 150, 2 more units. In a typical day, Between 20-28 units multiple times a day. A1c=7.7 currently. Is Humalog maybe not the right choice if I need such high dosing?
Avatar n tn She is supposed to call this morning about changing his dosing. She said evenutally he will be able to go to the insulin to carb dosing but not now. I have figured out if he does not eat every 2 hours his sugar goes low. Is that normal? I feel like I am over feeding him. Also he has NO symptoms as of now of low sugar so thats REALLY scary. Thanks for the info and all the suggestions. It is GREATLY appreciated!
Avatar f tn I am on Lantus since Jan 2014 and find it very hard to addapt. I was told to use 8 units at bedtime no matter what my reading is at night now i have notice at night when my reading is 9.7 and give myself 8 units of lantus my reading is very high in the morning 13.8 or more now when is lantus then suppose to kick in . my mealtime insulien is 2 to 3 units at mealtime, Surely I have to give myself more lantus at night maybe 12 units.
Avatar f tn I would also never every recommend that he do something that would violate CFR regulations by concealing the fact he is taking Lantus with an insulin syringe. My own opinion is that use of Lantus together with Metformin, together with exercise and tight dietary control (and I mean tight) would not unduly hazard the general public.
Avatar n tn After giving birth, the gestational diabetes took a respite for 6 months and then my sugars shot up and I lost 30 pounds hoping to avoid insulin but I ended up on insulin anyway. I kept off those 30 pounds and was at an average weight until I started Lantus and now I gained back all that weight. While doctors will tell you it's not the insulin as they don't want you to stop taking it, I do believe some insulins (like any medication) have side effects.
443862 tn?1237999439 Still I have read online that Lantus causes weight gain althoug it is better than NPH apparently. Althoug I used to take NPH and still I was 30 pounds lighter. So now with novorapid and Lantus have gained 30 pouds. I am trying low carb started this week although when I told the dietician she told me not to do it because i can't do high propteina pparently for the kidneys. I'm still doing low carb, but no reason that it needs to be high in protein.
Avatar f tn Thinking about going back on lantus to see if the weight comes off then i can prove to her that Its the meds. Has anyone taken toujeo if so what was your experience? Thank you in advance.
20693191 tn?1503884408 Recently my endocrinologist suggest I use Lantus. She thought it would be better for me. I also use Humalog. She started me with 48 units of Lantus, at night. I quickly noticed that it was too high of a dosage. I was waking up in the middle of the night hypoglycemic. The lowest was 2.9 and even then, in the morning, sometimes at 3.5-4.0. She decided to bring it down to 40. Not low enough. During the day my ratios went from 1:7 to 1:6.
Avatar f tn I seemed to be gaining a lot of weight since being on Lantus for the last two years as well I have mood swings and irritability and now started having severe lows right after injecting the Lantus (it usually happens if I bleed after my shot and has happened since switching to the Solostar disposable pen needle. Anyone else have any bad reactions to the Lantus.
Avatar n tn But I would personally not make the assumption that you are dropping low at night and lower the long-lasting insulin (NPH or Lantus) just based on that assumption. You may want to set your alarm clock for some time in the middle of the night (maybe at around 3 a.m. if you are taking NPH before bedtime, for that would be when it would be peaking) and just do a blood test a few nights in a row to see for sure if you are dropping low while you sleep.
Avatar n tn Per UCLA Med Center we are currently dosing him 8 units of Lantus split to 5 units in the AM before school, then 3 units about 2 hours before bedtime), with a bedtime BG check. We also are giving 1 unit Humalog per carb unit. We found the thigh for him is the best place for the Lantus. Stomach absorption rate was too fast. It's early in the game but this so far is working quite well for us. During the initial 15 days we administered first 12, then 10 Lantus all at night, as recommended.
Avatar f tn I take 40 units Lantus (long acting), and sliding scale Novolog (fast acting) insulins. My bg is always so high in the mornings, I have to take Novolog and wait for sugar to come down to eat. I've had diabetes for many years, but never knew for sure which one! My dr would switch my diagnosis all the time. But went to endo and they did a blood test, and said I'm type 1. I'm angry my dr. never did anything about this.
Avatar n tn While my endocrinologist insist Lantus does not make you gain weight I have gained back the 30 pounds I lost prior to being put on insulin 6 years ago. I even started power walking 4 nights a week and did not lose weight. Very discouraging when weight gain for a diabetic is not healthy. Good luck with you daughter...My dad became Type 1 at 18 months, my brother at 12 years and me at 33 during my pregnancy with my only child.
Avatar n tn Hello! I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Lantus begins to work in about the time frame that you're beginning to sweat. Have you checked your blood sugars when you start sweating? It's possible that it's just your body reacting to a long acting insulin that it's not used to. The body reacts in strange ways, but this isn't a normal reaction.
