Common Questions and Answers about Lantus in canada

lantus

Avatar n tn I have had diabetes for 28 years, and I live in Canada, where Lantis is not sold, because of a pricing dispute with an arms-length government body. I just started using Lantis, by crossing the border and paying the ridiculous price for it because of the claims I've heard from users. Okay, so here's my question to verteran users of Lantis. Is it that much better? In the last few days I've read people say they are taking two doses of it.
Avatar m tn as I never heard of these problems with Lantus. Lantus is a 24 hour basal insulin that starts to work in an hour after injected and lasts most of the day without peaking. Also, I have never heard of a Lantus pen but have a call into our local rep to ask. My teenage son has Type 1 diabetes and there is never a dull moment with diabetes, is there.
Avatar n tn Our lifestyles are different, and our split doses of Lantus are different. In my case, I need most of my Lantus in the morning and only 2 units at night to see me through the night. My twin on the other hand, splits her dosage more half and half. And yes, I agree that there is a peak in the action of Lantus somewhere between 4-5 hours, usually. Some people notice it more than others. I notice it a great deal and have to feed it when it happens.
491523 tn?1209215092 It displays results in mg/dL. While on vacation last summer in Canada, I took advantage of an offer for a free OneTouch Ultra Mini. It displays results in mmol/L. The Canadian pharmacist assured me I could change the meter to display in mg/dL. But in fact I cannot. The manual clearly says so. I'd like to keep using it.
Avatar f tn Even if my sugar is good before bed and I take my lantus it is always high in the morning. Any reason and any advise?
Avatar n tn So imediject has a valid point if you are taking Lantus in the morning. Many diabetics split their doses of Lantus and take some at night and some first thing in the morning so that peaking is minimal (for some of us, there IS a slight peak about 4 hours after injection) and the petering out of it as it wears off is also minimal.
Avatar f tn I have been on lantus since about 2003, and in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I ve just been reading how lantus may cause cancer . im afraid the lantus may have caused this. did anyone else have anything like this happen? as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
Avatar f tn I am a type 1A diabetic with normal insulin sensitivity and predictable bg responses to insulin doses. Until now. I went on a reducing diet (high protein, next to 0 carbs, increased exercise) but never decreased my once daily PM dose of Lantus (10 units.) Immediately my AM bg's jumped to over 200 and stayed there. No hypoglycemia during sleep (I never woke up, anyway.)I could bring my daily bg's down with my shortacting insulin.
Avatar f tn You can use both Novalog and Lantus, but not in the same syringe and not at the same injection site. Lantus is usually administered at night to bring your glucose levels down to normal in the morning. If you have abnormal glucose levels at bedtime, one philosophy is to bring them down to normal using a small amount of short acting insulin and then use the lantus to make sure they will be normal in the morning.
Avatar n tn Believe it or not, this happened to me yesterday. I take 85 units of Lantus in the am, and I think I hit a vein. As the injection went in, I didn't get the "burn", and I could taste it in my mouth. About a half hour later, I started to crash....450 grams of carbs later, I got my sugar up to about 200. It settled down a little later to about 140. As an RN, I should know better to pull back on the syringe to check for blood return before injecting. I was in a hurry...
Avatar n tn I find that it is pretty much impossible to drop severely low in that period of time with Lantus, if the dosage is correct and the last blood test was normal. It could be that the oral meds plus the Lantus are too much for him and his dosage needs to be adjusted. If it is happening often, have him test frequently for awhile and write down the results to he has a record of the patterns. Then he needs to work with his doctor to perhaps lower the dosage of one of the medicines.
Avatar n tn And as for the sweats about a half hour after taking Lantus, there IS a slight peak action with Lantus, although this peak action for most people is several hours after taking the Lantus. In my case, I usually take my Lantus at about 6 am, and I notice a peak that causes my glucose levels to drop by about 8 am. This happens even if I have not taken any Novolog or eaten breakfast (sometimes I wait until I get to work to take Novolog and eat breakfast), so it has to be the Lantus peaking.
915277 tn?1252573113 The fact that EASD discovered that Lantus excites cancer cells in patients is of vital interest to many. Whether Lantus creates cancer in humans is another story. In lab rodents yes but the study report due in September, maybe, is aimed at whether non-cancerous humans using Lantus will become cancer targets. Whether Lantus user should jump of the bandwagon now is uncertain. The big uncertainty is what the FDA is doing about this as EASD surely has made them aware of their findings.
Avatar f tn I seemed to be gaining a lot of weight since being on Lantus for the last two years as well I have mood swings and irritability and now started having severe lows right after injecting the Lantus (it usually happens if I bleed after my shot and has happened since switching to the Solostar disposable pen needle. Anyone else have any bad reactions to the Lantus.
Avatar m tn Diabetes is a disease where the body does not proses carbohydrates properly resulting in high blood sugar (BG). lantus is a background insulin, lasts about 24 hours. lantus just keeps you idling along. When you eat carbs it raises BG as your body digests the food. so you need insulin to lower your BG the same way that food raises BG. When you eat or when your BG is too high you need to take insulin that is faster acting than Lantus.
Avatar m tn other wise my sugar levels are in range I wanted to confirm lantus alone is sufficient for me or i need to add rapid insulin also. C-PETIDE SERUM - IS .
Avatar n tn When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.
Avatar n tn Lantus, Humalog, and Novolog ALL require prescrptions because 1) they have not been out on the market as long as the conventional porcine/bovine insulins (Humulin N, R, L, 50/50, 70/30, etc), 2) The onset of actions for Humalog, Novolog, and Lantus are quite fast (anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes), and although these insulins generally do NOT cause hypoglycemia episodes (low blood sugar), if patients do not know how to use them properly, they can lapse into a hypoglycemia episode and this can
Avatar n tn This is a wonderful resource for Type I's...often a minority in support groups, IMHO. My first posting to the forum although I've been type I since age 7...now a healthy 45 year old (female). I am mostly happy with the current combination of Humalog Pen and Lantus. My questions are in regards to Lantus: I understand the "non-peak" aspect...but personally dropped very low in early a.m.'s (about 4-6 a.m) after injecting on a regular basis at 10 p.m.
Avatar n tn I have noticed that no matter what I do the lantus stings after I inject it before I go to bed. Is this common? Is there any tricks anyone has learned that has helped them?
Avatar f tn My doctor recently changed my long acting insulin from lantus 90 units at night, to toujeo 90 units. Since taking toujeo I have gained 8 pound in 3 weeks. I'm so not happy. Lantus I didn't have that problem. I just had hip surgery so I can't move around as much. The doctor is like your making excuses about gaining weight. I follow a vegan vegetarian meal plan I'm not making excuses. I haven't gained weight in two years. I've been losing. She is pissing me off.
Avatar f tn Within 3 days I am starting to smell perfume as normal again I still have the facial rash but I think it is improving, There is something extremely dangerous in the Lantus
Avatar n tn Does anyone know a formula for amount of Lantus needed for a basal dose vs how many units fast-acting you take per carb? I have major swings. Yesterday was told by a nurse that the Lantus I take is really low compared to amount of Humalog I take, but she never told me HOW much she thought I should be taking. I take 1.5 u Humalog per carb for all meals (for last 3 weeks - has changed many times). I'm supposed to take 11 u Lantus in am. My morning BS is usually 300-500.
Avatar n tn I take Lantus and my doctor is telling me that they do not come in a pen in the US only in Europe.I was on a different type of insulin 30/70 and it just did not work for me and that was a pen now I am back on the needle and I do not like it and never will I take the Lantus with the needle.
Avatar n tn I have been using Lantus for 2 years now, and in the past 3 months have experienced this. Is it possible I have developed an allergy to Lantus? The burning is almost intolerable. Or could it be a bad batch of Lantus? I am Type 1 times 27 years.
Avatar f tn 7 and give myself 8 units of lantus my reading is very high in the morning 13.8 or more now when is lantus then suppose to kick in . my mealtime insulien is 2 to 3 units at mealtime, Surely I have to give myself more lantus at night maybe 12 units.
