Lantus dose calculation

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus dose calculation

lantus

Avatar n tn So adding strength training will probably use more carbs so lowering your dose of Lantus would be the correct thing to do. But in this case you might want to try to use the Actrapid to lower your highs instead as you are currently doing. You should be able to figure out what your carb/Actrapid ratio is pretty simply. Take a reading and then take a specific amount of Actrapid and wait for it to have its full effect and then take another reading.
Avatar n tn I take Lantus every evening. I fell asleep and failed to take my dose. I woke at 5 am. should i inject novolog to correct my number?
Avatar f tn I am a type 1A diabetic with normal insulin sensitivity and predictable bg responses to insulin doses. Until now. I went on a reducing diet (high protein, next to 0 carbs, increased exercise) but never decreased my once daily PM dose of Lantus (10 units.) Immediately my AM bg's jumped to over 200 and stayed there. No hypoglycemia during sleep (I never woke up, anyway.)I could bring my daily bg's down with my shortacting insulin.
Avatar f tn I take 40 units Lantus (long acting), and sliding scale Novolog (fast acting) insulins. My bg is always so high in the mornings, I have to take Novolog and wait for sugar to come down to eat. I've had diabetes for many years, but never knew for sure which one! My dr would switch my diagnosis all the time. But went to endo and they did a blood test, and said I'm type 1. I'm angry my dr. never did anything about this.
Avatar m tn Lantus should be used as your long acting / basal insulin. look up basal testing, which will explain how to work out what dose of lantus you need. Then you use fast acting insulin based on how many carbs you eat and your insulin sensitivity. #30 is too low. You want to keep your blood sugar in the 70 - 120 range (ideally middle of this range if you can).
Avatar n tn If I were to switch I would ask my Dr. if I could skip 1 dose of Lantus and just start on a new schedule. In other words I would skip 1 evening dose and not take another dose until the following morning 36 hours later. This would seem to be the easiest to me but you would have to bolus a lot that one day to compensate. Like I said see the Dr. this can be really complicated. Long answer to a short question. Hope it helps some.
Avatar n tn You might also want to ask about the insulin pump, Which does the same as the Lantus. It gives you a base line of insulin and you just dose your self when you eat according to the amount of carbohydrates you eat.
Avatar n tn Some of us prefer to split the Lantus dose, taking some in the morning and some in the evening to equal the complete dose. That way, only half is petering out after 20 hours, and the sugar levels stay more even throughout the day. The Lantus shouldn't work quickly, for it crystallizes in the injection site and slowly dumps tiny bits of insulin into the body all day. So the quick-acting insulin is what you want to use to lower a high reading.
Avatar n tn When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
Avatar f tn Also is anyone combining both Novilin NPH and Lantus with Lantus at bedtime and the NPH at a lower dose around noon.
Avatar n tn My dose for lantus is 22 but what if while my mom was injecting me she accidentally forgot 4 units off
Avatar m tn m trying to say is maybe your son needs to increase his lantus dose, watch his night meals carefully... and of course consulting an endocrinologist is essential... Hope your and your son best!!!
Avatar n tn Does anyone know a formula for amount of Lantus needed for a basal dose vs how many units fast-acting you take per carb? I have major swings. Yesterday was told by a nurse that the Lantus I take is really low compared to amount of Humalog I take, but she never told me HOW much she thought I should be taking. I take 1.5 u Humalog per carb for all meals (for last 3 weeks - has changed many times). I'm supposed to take 11 u Lantus in am. My morning BS is usually 300-500.
Avatar f tn My 23-year-old nephew who is 6'2" and weights well over 230 pounds only takes 34 units of lantus at night and up to 16 units of humalog if he eats pizza. I have told him that the lantus dose is governed by weight and since I weigh 220 and take 33 units a day, he isn't taking nearly enough. I think he is compensating with the humalog, which runs a higher risk that he will and does have insulin reactions. I also started out taking lantus at night.
Avatar n tn Keeping good records showed me that I got 18-20 hours of coverage At Most from the Lantus, and when I hit that blank spot between 4 and 8 AM, there was just nothing left. I ended up splitting the Lantus to a 2/3 dose in the AM, and 1/3 in the evening. That covered the 'no Lantus left' spot that was causing the mystery highs.
Avatar n tn Does anyone know what the keys to good, consistent control are with this product? My doctor merely generalized by saying I would need to find my dose with Lantus by increasing a couple of units every few days for high fasting BG. Thanks for any light you can shed.
Avatar f tn Novolog is before meals And Lantus is before bed or late in the evening.
Avatar n tn No, I am not aware of any people who have contacted us with any kind of resistance to Lantus. I do know that Lantus must be replaced at the end of a month on one bottle. The expiration date is really important, for near the end of the month, some of us find that it no longer crystallizes properly. Some people notice that when the Lantus bottle is about one month old, it doesn't work well. But if you just started the bottle, this is probably not the problem.
Avatar f tn My daughter is 17 and is having trouble with adjusting insulin doses...how much lantus would be a good dose to start with?
Avatar f tn as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
Avatar n tn I am currently using Lantus (one dose in the morning only). Since these incidents I have started dividing up my dose into two or three injections in the morning. And for the record there have been other times in the past that I have accidentally injected into a capillary and the reaction is immediate and I can tell the difference from what I am now experiencing. My Dr's have no explanation. So now I am afraid to take my insulin as I never know what will happen.
Avatar n tn His blood sugar at 9pm was 155 I gave him the Lantus as ordered. At 2am he was shaky, sweaty, and weak.was the Lantus dose to much for his blood sugar level?I should mention he ate supper late 7pm.I'm wondering if I gave it to close to thr humolog dose before supper.
Avatar n tn The currently accepted treatment of choice is a basal (long-acting) insulin like Lantus once or twice a day and a bolus or rapid acting insulin before meals. A fixed dose of bolus like you describe is not as good as developing a carb ratio. You need to take the correct insulin dose each meal to cover what you eat (unless you want to eat the same thing every meal!).
Avatar n tn The 72-hour glucose monitor is used often by doctors to attempt to ascertain what kind of glucose patterns a patient is having or how certain foods or activities affect that patient's glucose readings. If you are having trouble fine-tuning your insulin regimen, then your doctor may hope that using this device for a short period of time will help him or her try to establish a better combination of basal dose and mealtiime bolus to keep your glucose levels more even-keeled than they are now.
Avatar n tn I want to find out if you are having problems with consistent dose delivery using an Aventis Optipen plus or an Owen Mumford Autompen or stability of the insulin once out of the fridge Also have any of you contacted the manufacturers - Sanofi Aventis or Owen Mumford about this? I have been on insulin for nearly 38 years and am lucky enough to have no complications so believe I have managed my control pretty well.
