Lantus and weight

Common Questions and Answers about Lantus and weight

lantus

Avatar n tn After giving birth, the gestational diabetes took a respite for 6 months and then my sugars shot up and I lost 30 pounds hoping to avoid insulin but I ended up on insulin anyway. I kept off those 30 pounds and was at an average weight until I started Lantus and now I gained back all that weight. While doctors will tell you it's not the insulin as they don't want you to stop taking it, I do believe some insulins (like any medication) have side effects.
Avatar n tn My 16 year old daugher has been diabetic for 4 years now. She used to be on Lantus but it caused a lot of lows and weight gain. We always thought that she needed to take the long acting insulin 2 times a day rather than 1 and when we saw her endocrinologist about a year ago, they changed her to Levimere insulin. You take this insulin morning and night. It has been a life saver for her in that she feels her lows quicker and her reactions aren't as pronounced.
Avatar f tn He offered me a levemir sample he said it had less weight gain than lantus and was the same., plus the levemir company still samples, I have been on this stuff for three weeks, I don't feel sluggish after taking it, I feel great, and the pen is nice!
Avatar n tn The new insulin Lantus and Novolog does seem to allow me to gain weight more easily but I was able a while back to take off some 25 pounds by staying away from FAT and Lower my Carbs. When sugar went low used quick acting sugar like glucose gel or Coke stayed away from cookies candy bars ect to get it up. Excercise helped not pound wise but did loose inches. Best thing was to eat close to Zero Fat and Low Carbs.
Avatar f tn Just remember that the more insulin you shoot, the more weight you gain. Try cutting back on your carbs and that will cut down on your Lantus and that will cut down on your weight. Remember that human insulin, like Lantus, is not like switching from tylenol to advil. There are more significant signs your body will give you. It's like it's telling you that it noticed you have made a very serious change. The mood swings are common in female diabetics.
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. So have you already switched to Lantus and are seeing the gain? That isn't clear, but I presume that's the case. Yes, switching insulins can cause weight gain, as the body reacts differently to different insulins. Insulins can stimulate the body into causing fat production, and when the body has to learn to deal with a new insulin, it may very well react that way.
Avatar n tn It could just be that your body is learning to adjust to the lantus, and the sweating will go away when you get used to it. Your weight gain could be because of the same thing, your body reacts differently to different types of insulin, and now your body is trying to figure out how to deal with lantus.
Avatar f tn it has been extremely difficult to lose weight since I got on insulin. i am on lantas/humalog and exercise regularly. If I work to reduce my lantus dosage while maintaining a proper blood sugar will that aid weight loss? Does anything out there help to boost metabolism in diabetics? Frustrated! Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Avatar n tn I read some articles about this just yesterday and was surprised, for I take Lantus and have noticed no weight gain at all. So this could be a factor. However, a change in metabolism in middle age probably is the real culprit, along with possibly a slower metabolism because you are not eating. Exercise should help both problems. Start walking! Park your car further from the door, take stairs instead of elevators, etc. Or use your lunch hour to do some mild exercise right in your office.
Avatar f tn as well im type1 diabetic and my bloodsugers are really up and down all the time and i take a split dose of lantus. my suger will drop and stay down all day or for hours!
Avatar f tn Hi, I have recently started using Lantus Solostar and have gained weight. I eat very sensibly and very rarely do I have carbs (mostly salads). I use Novorapid as my quick acting and have low doses of that (10, 6, 8) and 16 Lantus. I have been type 1 diabteic for 26 years (since I was 5) and have not had problems with my weight but in the last 6 weeks have gained 5.1kg I am very active and am finding this hard to deal with.
Avatar m tn Is it common for someone with type 2 diabetes to be on Humalog 3X daily and Lantus 1X daily?
Avatar f tn and weights well over 230 pounds only takes 34 units of lantus at night and up to 16 units of humalog if he eats pizza. I have told him that the lantus dose is governed by weight and since I weigh 220 and take 33 units a day, he isn't taking nearly enough. I think he is compensating with the humalog, which runs a higher risk that he will and does have insulin reactions. I also started out taking lantus at night.
Avatar n tn When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
Avatar m tn I just started on Lantus and Humalog and my blood sugars seem to keep going up, I take 30 U at night Lantus and I take Humalog 10 before meals if my bs is 180 or higher, does this sound right, I was diagnosed a Type 2 about 6 years ago, but the Glipizide and Metformin I was taking has been stopped, but my fasting bs has been 270 or higher any suggestions I know control my diet I get that, I also weigh 239 my Dr's say to loose weight, and I am going to try.
12861759 tn?1432917955 I am currently using Lantus and Novolog. Drs. advice is to start with 40 units of Lantus and up it 2 units every third day until I get a fasting BG of less then 130. Is it more important to get to my Lantus goal on a consistant basis before I try to adjust my Novolog?
Avatar m tn m a type 1 diabetic because I have been taking humalog and lantus for last 11 years and havent in the last 2 months with the exception of 1 or 2 injections.
Avatar n tn ve heard of other people giving more like 15 units of Lantus, but I think I would constantly go low during the day if i raised my unit intake. Could my weight have something to do with my lack of Lantus injections (I only weight 118 pounds or so)? Thank you so much for all of your help!
Avatar n tn I take Lantus and I also take Metformin 500 mg. twice a day. I am on 20 units of Lantus and have taken Lantus for years. (I use to be on 40 units a day, until I lost 125 pounds) I have not been good about following my diet and I notice that my blood sugar readings have been higher. My fasting blood sugars have been higher than normal (around 175) but I know it's because I have been eating too many carbs and have gained 20 pounds.
Avatar n tn Hello. I am T1 since Oct 2004, and switched to Lantus in Feb. Most of my BG numbers are very good (A1Cs 6.0 and 5.5), but since switching to Lantus, I have experienced 5 episodes of sudden and extreme drops in BG. They happen late morning, not related to breakfast, novolog dose or exercise. My BG is usually above 150 when it starts, and I must consume 150-200 grams of carbs (as juice or gel) to get it to stabilize, usually in 20-30 mins.
Avatar n tn About a month ago, my doctor changed my long acting insulin from Novolin NPH to Lantus. This completely threw me off and I ended up being woken up by paramedics 3 times in 1 week. My blood sugar would be normal before bed and then by morning it had gone to 1.8. When I would eat a snack before bed to keep my blood sugar from dropping, I would go high - 13.0-15.0 on average. My doctor has now switched me back to my Novolin NPH and I am still having a hard time getting back on track.
Avatar n tn I am on lantus and the Novolog pen. I know when I first started lantus I got very anxious and before I had to take it, just in a dead panic. I can not fully answer your question, but I need your help. Can you ask your daughter if her lantus burns, itches, and/or does the area she injects it (arm, leg, stomach) feel heavy or like a big knot is under it?
Avatar n tn I have been type 1 diabetic for 24 years now (female), and I am using lantus(once a day) and humalog(3 times) for the last 5 years. between bedtime and breakfast I am having a drop in BGs of around 10-13 mmols. and then in the mornings, after breakfast BGs shoot up, so my normal carb-insulin ratio doesnt work well. I cannot understand why this overnight drop is happening, which is becoming scary. I tested BGs during the night and there seems to be a drop of 2 mmol/hour.
Avatar n tn I have tried correlating it with high doses of H due to high carb intake and then a possible mixing of the H with the Lantus. Neither theory panned out. Does anyone have any similar experiences? I was warned by nurse that I might have reactions to the Lantus, but have not been able to get back to the clinic to find out if this is a normal reaction that will go away. So far, it does wax and wane so my motivation is confused. Will this go away after awhile?
