I use a short-acting insulin, Novolog, and a 24-period insulin, Lantis. I give Novolog with each meal, and Lantus when I go to bed. I am having troubles with my sugars in the morning. I wake up at 7am, and eat breakfast. I give my shot immediately after eating breakfast, around 7:20. I test my sugar before I eat breakfast and it is normally good. Then at 8am, I head to school. When I arrive at school around 9am, I test my sugar, which is usually pretty high (200-300).
For the past year, I have been taking Novolog Insulin in combination with Lantus. I have noticed the beginning stages of cellulite around the areas where I give the Novolog injection. I am a 27 year old, juvenile onset diabetic. I am thin for my height and have never had a problem with cellulite until the change in medication. Can this be linked to either of the new insulins that I am taking?
12. He goes to school all day, and sometimes gets hungry and I am wondering if it is necessary always for him to take insuling even for snacks?

I take 40 units Lantus (long acting), and sliding scale Novolog (fast acting) insulins. My bg is always so high in the mornings, I have to take Novolog and wait for sugar to come down to eat. I've had diabetes for many years, but never knew for sure which one! My dr would switch my diagnosis all the time. But went to endo and they did a blood test, and said I'm type 1. I'm angry my dr. never did anything about this.
I think the problem centers on the fac that she is on Novolog and NPH in the morning and then she is on Novolog and Lantusin the evening. NPH lasts 12-18 hours and Lantus lasts 18-26 hours. I think those doses are overlapping. My question to the Dr. would be why is she on Lantus and NPH??!?!?!?!?

Yes, switching insulins can cause weight gain, as the body reacts differently to different insulins. Insulins can stimulate the body into causing fat production, and when the body has to learn to deal with a new insulin, it may very well react that way.
Steve, here is what I know about insulins and insulin pumps. Please consult your doctor for more details:
Insulins:
Novolog (aspart),onset 5-10 mins, peak 1-3 hrs, duration 3-5 hrs
Humalog (lispro), onset <15 mins, peak .5-1.5 hrs, duration 2-4
Regular, onset .
It would involve one daily injection of a long-acting insulin like Lantus, which has a flat action profile over 24 hours. And a shot of Humalog or Novolog before each meal. Doing this would minimise the carb/insulin mismatch when you skip a meal.
The basal/bolus regimen would give you more flexibility and better control. You may want to discuss this with your doctor.

i am not a doctor but a person who has ben diabetic 32 years. i am now on an insulin pump and only use Novolog, a rapid acting insulin for both my background and bolus insulin needs. i would recommend you call the clinic as that very well could be a reaction to the Lantus and they may put you on a different background type insulin.
Has anybody out there had a problem taking Novalog? I have been on LANTUS AND NOVALOG for 4 years now. I have chronic Lyme and part of my pancreas (tail) removed. For the last two years I've had these strange internal tremors that I have been to the doctor several times to have checked out. I'm told it's anxiety or too little sleep so I'm given RX for those, which I take for a short while, and decide that the side effects are worse than the tremors.
I am type 2 on insulin, I take lantus and have had several times around 12-4am where my sugar suddenly drops. It has dropped 75 in just two hours. I start freaking out. It won't go down all day until late at night. The doctor says it doesn't peak but why this sudden drop? I rather take a small dose of Humalog at night. I know that my Humalog would stop after about four hours and didn't have to worry about it overnight.

s assume they can eat whatever they want and cover it with insulin. So they take higher doses of insulin and sometimes even have to eat more to match the insulin dose instead of the reverse. Usually Insulin Resistance is a Type II problem but Type 1's who gain weight can also develop resistance which then makes them gain more weight so it is a vicious cycle. Perhaps it would help to talk to a nutritionist about a program of weight loss and lower carbs.
Lantus, Humalog, and Novolog ALL require prescrptions because 1) they have not been out on the market as long as the conventional porcine/bovine insulins (Humulin N, R, L, 50/50, 70/30, etc), 2) The onset of actions for Humalog, Novolog, and Lantus are quite fast (anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes), and although these insulins generally do NOT cause hypoglycemia episodes (low blood sugar), if patients do not know how to use them properly, they can lapse into a hypoglycemia episode and this can

Can you ask your daughter if her lantus burns, itches, and/or does the area she injects it (arm, leg, stomach) feel heavy or like a big knot is under it?
About a month ago I started taking 36 Units of Lantus at bedtime using the Opticlik Cartridge Delivery System and during the day I use Novolog Insulin throaway Flex Pen and that is 12 units before I eat anything. I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???.
My father was recently discharged from a nursing home and he takes 2 different kinds of insulin. Novolog 70/30 and Novolog Aspart (Sliding Scale). I've heard about sliding scale before but when i brought it up to his pharmacist she did not know much about it (got me concerned). I found this one sliding scale online, listings of how much units to give depending on what his blood sugar level is.

I am the parent of an 18 year old who was diagnosed at the age of 21 months and we've done shots (N&R, Lantus&Humalog), inhaled insulin (did a 2 year study), and currently she's on an insulin pump (& loving it!).
My daughter's endo had her on a sliding scale dosage, dependent on her bg reading.
I switched from lantus to novolog and the doses are different, I then switched to the 70/30 novolin (relion brand from wal mart) as it was much cheaper and the dose once again changed, although I am type 2 and monitor my levels closely, all insulin brands work differently so be careful and consult Dr.
I did finally settle on the 70/30 mix, you can get the pens but it is much cheaper to just inject yourself, I get the needles that are the same size as the pens.....
The most effective and up to date diabetes regimen is a long acting basal insulin such as lantus or levimir either once or twice daily and a rapid acting bolus before each meal, dose determined by an insulin:carb ratio so that the dose is covering what you are actually eating. I would ask for a referral to an endo as your doctors don't seem to be up to date on treatment.
