Lamotrigine weight loss

Common Questions and Answers about Lamotrigine weight loss

lamictal

1756969 tn?1332437163 ve been taking Lamotrigine for over a year. It caused no changes in my weight or appetite. And I swear by the medication.
Avatar f tn My son is 25 and has seizure disorder. This past Thanksgiving, he had a total of 5 seizures over 24 hours necessitating a hospital visit and stay. They put him on a third seizure medication (Lamotrigine). I spoke with a neurologist at USF who didn't like that a 3rd medication was added before his previous two were maxed out--he was already on Keppra (max dosage) and Depakote (sprinkles--very low dose), so she titrated him up on the Depakote so we could get rid of the Lamotrigine.
Avatar m tn topamax is not an atypical antipsychotic rather an off-label anticonvulsant (antiepilepsy) drug to stabilize BP. Strange one of the side effects is anorexia (loss of appetite). The only drug i know which doesn't cause weight gain is lamotrigine. But aside from it all the AC's, lithium, AP's even AD's cause weight gain. In short all BP drugs increase weight. That's a price we pay. I recall once Oprah had a program for BP and all the guests were rather heavy weight persons.
Avatar n tn g. Googling lamotrigine hair loss). It does seem clear that lamotrigine can be associated with substantial hair loss. The same vitamins which have been recommended for valproate (Depakote)-associated hair loss (as that medication is well-known to cause this problem) were suggested informally by one person who felt they had helped: selenium and zinc, which can be found together in the (expensive) vitamin called Centrum Silver. http://www.psycheducation.
1756969 tn?1332437163 I take lamotrigine - 200mg -- and it has worked well for me with no side effects. It is usually weight neutral meaning it doesn't affect your appetite. I have taken other mood stabilizers and didn't like the side effects - lithium, bad hand tremor, diarrhea, vomiting; depakote, hair loss, weight gain; seroquel, extreme sleepiness Do remember that this is my experience and yours may be different.
899491 tn?1243773627 Yes that's good news but of concern since it affected you to the point where it caused weight loss but glad it worked out alright. I'd suggest you have your doctor write a note that you are allergic to Lamictal and cannot take it in case you go to another doctor or clinic or hospital since they often ask that. Its not a big deal but they would know that's one mood stabilizer that could not be used. Just a practical suggestion.
Avatar m tn Lamotrigine (Lamictal) seems to be missing from your list. It is weight-neutral, but of course it, too, has a list of possible side effects. In my case, I really liked it as a mood stabilizer, but over time it caused pronounced hand tremors. The big one to watch out for is the risk of a severe and potentially dangerous rash. If Lamotrigine is ramped up very slowly, that risk is greatly diminished. Good luck!

Avatar f tn Some have weight loss, some gain, some both. Medication affects everyone differently so it's hard to say until you take it. I've actually list weight since going on lithium, but I've heard of other people having quite the opposite happen to them.
Avatar f tn I was also on epilim and was taken off because of the weight gain, im now on lamotrigine, at the begining I found this to really lift my mood but then it wasnt enough so I was added some other medication, cant remember the name, I was ok for months but now for some reason I have started to cycle again.
Avatar f tn I am going to ask to switch to Abilify as I have read good reports on that and know a few people on it that are helped by it. The Geodone is causing weight loss. Rare side effect. It was great in the begining, I lost all the weight I gained while on Ziprexa but now I am down to a size 2 and people keep asking me if I am okay so I know the weight loss is noticable. Good luck. The beginning stages are the hardest. It may also take a while to get the med combination right so keep trying.
202665 tn?1248806733 I experience some form of memory loss on antipsychotics but the medicine that really caused me to have that level of memory loss and confusion like you describe was Cogentin which can cause Alzheimer's-like side effects, although Cogentin isn't a psych med, it's a side effect pill. I don't know if psych meds can cause memory loss to that extent or not but I would bet it's possible although I would get other causes ruled out like you're doing.
Avatar f tn I am currently taking Wellbutrin XL 300mg, Lamotrigine 25 mg, Zyrtec, Levothyroxine 75mg, and Atenolol 50mg. I started Lamotrigine (lamictal generic) 2 weeks ago. On day 9, I developed severe diarrhea and cramps. It was slowed down with 1 pill of Immodium, but after 2 days I decided to eat a "regular" meal and got diarrhea again. So it's been on an off for 6 days, and this morning it was worse than it was the first day!
1610967 tn?1314811101 I have had other medications cause changes in weight and appetite including some that caused weight loss and a decrease in appetite.I have not had the two occur together but it would be worthwhile to discuss this with your psychiatrist. Also it could be an interaction of the various medications so depending on the cause and extent of the problem they should be able to decide how to appropriately address this and adjust and/or change your medications as needed.
Avatar n tn SHOULD I HAVE BEEN TAKEN OFF LAMICTAL BEFORE THE INDUCED SEIZURES? I am experiences extreme memory loss and cognitve function. Unable to speak articulately since the ECT. It doesn't make sense that I would be on an anti seizure medicine. Would this require more electricity to be used to induce the seizure? Would more electricity risk brain damage? Which I feel I have. The doctors of course are telling me that it's all in my head.
Avatar n tn The berry itself is just another berry, high in antioxidants. But most supplements containing acai have several ingredients. As for the fraud claims, all natural products claiming weight loss benefits have been targeted by the federal gov't. Whether this is justified or not I have no idea, but in the case of acai it's hard to see how a berry can do what the supplements claims say it can. As a food, it's very nutritious, as are all berries.
899491 tn?1243773627 No the cognitive blunting you speak about is not really a side effect of concern. Topomax can cause weight loss to the point where I believe its approved as a diet medication. That's generally not of concern either. The only side effect of concern that would be one to watch out for is gastritis and if that occurs you would need to ask your psychiatrist to change you to another medication as that can develop into something long term as happenned as with a friend of mine and other people.
Avatar f tn What are the long-term effects of a psychotropic (lamotrigine) and its propensity for binding to melanin in the eyes? Will a person lose vision in later life? Does this phenomenon contribute to ARMD or increase one's risk for glaucoma or vision loss? Can one ward off damage to photoreceptor cells or counteract the potential risk from medications?
Avatar f tn I take Depakote before i got pregnant and was taking prenatals just in case. Then when me and my husband found out i was pregnant, i was switched to Lamotrigine which is the safest for pregnant women with seizures. I know its really hard for us women with seizures now that we are carrying a life inside, we need to be extra careful. I understand you...
1066198 tn?1333309028 ANYONE OUT THERE EXPERIENCE ANY HAIR LOSS- WHILE TAKING LAMICTAL (LAMOTRIGINE) FOR BI-POLAR DISORDER OR SEIZURE DISORDERS? IF SO, IN WHAT DOSES AND TIME FRAMES ? I HAVE BEEN ON IT FOR ONE YEAR NOW, AT 150 MG PER DAY.... JUST CURIOUS IF THIS COULD BE THE CULPRIT BEHIND MY HAIR LOSS.. MY HAIR HAS THINNED SO MUCH-- I CAN ALMOST SEE THRU IT...USED TO BE SO THICK- THAT I COULD NOT GET MY THUMB AND MIDDLE FINGER TO MEET AROUND A PONYTAIL.... I AM GOING TO THE DOC ON FRIDAY FOR EXAM AND LAB WORK.
Avatar f tn Only a few interactions between lamotrigine and other drugs have been identified. Lamotrigine increases the plasma level of carbamazepine and its metabolites. Carbamazepine lowers the concentration of lamotrigine in the blood. Valproate doubles the plasma level of lamotrigine, and the level of valproate is decreased by about 25% in people taking lamotrigine. Phenobarbital and primidone lower the plasma level of lamotrigine by about 40%.
Avatar f tn I got a partial response from Geodone (called Zeldox where I live) and lamotrigine, but I started to lose weight rapidly (got down to a size 2) so they switched to Abilify and my life is sooo much better. I really can't believe the difference. Each person reacts differently to meds. I have one friend who felt horrid on Abilify and does wonderfully on Zeldox. I know my pdoc said his most common combination is Seroquel for sleep and lamotrigine to stabilize.
Avatar f tn I think they're confused. If you read the full prescribing information, it's the PILL that screws with the lamotrigine, not the other way around. It's not like a lot of other anticonvulsants. From http://epilepsy.med.nyu.edu/treatment/medications/lamotrigine "Lamotrigine has no effect on other seizure medicines. And unlike some other seizure medicines, it does not reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills.
Avatar f tn It took me three years to get the right combo of something to help me sleep (trazodone), lamotrigine (mood stabilizer) and Geodone (although I hope to switch that to Abilify as I am having some weight loss issues on the Geodone). Most people I talk with need something to help with sleep and a mood stabilizer. Quite a few need an antipsychotic as well. And don't let them give up on you. I had on psychiatrist tell me there was nothing more they could do, and he sent me home.
