Lamotrigine vs carbamazepine

Common Questions and Answers about Lamotrigine vs carbamazepine

lamictal

Avatar f tn Lamotrigine increases the plasma level of carbamazepine and its metabolites. Carbamazepine lowers the concentration of lamotrigine in the blood. Valproate doubles the plasma level of lamotrigine, and the level of valproate is decreased by about 25% in people taking lamotrigine. Phenobarbital and primidone lower the plasma level of lamotrigine by about 40%. Oral contraceptives can lower the plasma level of lamotrigine by as much as 50%.
5544493 tn?1369608788 re BP I or II, and whether your main problems are depression, mania, or a lot of both, and whether you have psychosis in the mix. Lamotrigine and carbamazepine are generics, for the record, and Abilify and Seroquel are still under patent and so there aren't any generics yet. Anyway, lamotrigine (brand name Lamictal) is one of the best for BP II where depression is the main issue, although it's approved for BPI.
Avatar f tn I was also given a choice by my neurologist on which pills to have it was either Lamotrogine or Carbamazepine, I tried the Carbamazepine and found it didn't help. I feel like a normal human being since being on Lamotrogine. The only side affects I had were in the beginning and that was just being more tired than usual, this passed within about 3 weeks. I cannot fault Lamotrogine. Hope all goes well for you.
Avatar m tn Lamotrigine has been successful in controlling rapid cycling and mixed bipolar states in people who have not received adequate relief from lithium, carbamazepine and/or valproate. It also appears that lamotrigine has significantly more antidepressant potency than either carbamazepine or valproate. Lamotrigine is also useful as part of the treatment of some people with major (unipolar) depression.
Avatar f tn It started with absence seizure and at the age of 17 he started having convulsions. He has been on carbamazepine 1600 mg per day for 8 years aND had seuzures at an average of twice per year. Last year after marriage the frequency increased. Thrice in 3 months. We went to a different doc. He said that he had primary generalized seizure or a right right frontal focus with hemispheric bisynchrony. He also said that carbamazepine is not right medication for it so slowly changed it to kepra.
Avatar f tn i'm being put on Carbamazepine, I'm on the pill......anyone know if it'll stop my pill working? some sites say it MAY interact with it.....talk about unhelpful!
Avatar m tn carbamazepine, clobazam, lamotrigine, levetiracetam, oxcarbazepine and topiramate. These medications rarely stop the seizures completely but reduce the frequency and severity of them. I hope this helps, my prayers are with you and your son.
Avatar n tn For medical treatment of trigeminal neuralgia several types of drugs are tried either singly or in combination. These are anti-epilepsy drugs such as valproate, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, phenytoin, gabapentin, and pregabalin; muscle relaxants such as clonazepam and baclofen; tricyclic antidepressants such as carbamazepine, amitriptyline, and nortriptyline. The other option is surgery: Stereotactic radiosurgery, cutting or destroying part of nerve or removing blood vessel or tumor pressing it.
Avatar f tn I am taking carbamazepine, occasional lamotrigine and have recently been advised by my neurologist to add pregabalin, 2 daily. At present, my TN has shifted from the usual position from the left side of my face and down the left side of my nose to a new and very painful path from the scalp (front forehead) and down the left side of my nose. I cannot bear to touch my scalp without bringing on a spasm. Is it normal for trigeminal neuralgia to change position in this way? Thank you.
Avatar f tn Meds are pretty individual. Lamotrigine would be the one I'd ask for. It has a low side effect profile and is good more for the downs than the ups. If you are up more than you are down - lithium may be a better choice. Although with lithium you will need regular blood testing. Depakene is the other mood stabilizer but I know very little about it except it can make your hair fall out. I had a hard go around with the antipsychotics. Lots of side effects But finally Abilify works great for me.
Avatar f tn reports have claimed that carbamazepine, lamotrigine, gabapentin, corticosteroids or surgical procedures may be of help, but none of these have really been of much help. I find that the only thing that even comes close to helping me is either sitting on a very dark shower floor and having the water hit the top of my head, and then laying in a very dark, quiet room...laying on the side where the pain starts ( my left eye ). Other than that...I seriously hope we all find relief soon.
Avatar m tn I don't know i asked my doctor about this that why do it need Lithium, carbamazepine and Lamotrigine. He said these are mood stablizers and will keep my mood good always. I don't trust this. But i think lithium is augmenting the effect of Fluoxetine HCL (antidepressant) which i am talking for depression. I tried to cut lithium by half (225 mg) but i feel somewhat low in mood. Should i leave lithium, carbamazepamine and lamotrigine. and continue Fluoxetine HCL and amitryptlene.
Avatar f tn Hi all, saw MS nurse yesterday and told her about my muscles cramping and leg and foot spasms. She has suggested I start carbamazepine to see if it helps. Im wondering if anyone has been on this and if it works. What sort of side effects it has? I see this would be used in trigeminal neuralgia too, which I think Ive had a couple of attacks already.
Avatar f tn My son is 25 and has seizure disorder. This past Thanksgiving, he had a total of 5 seizures over 24 hours necessitating a hospital visit and stay. They put him on a third seizure medication (Lamotrigine). I spoke with a neurologist at USF who didn't like that a 3rd medication was added before his previous two were maxed out--he was already on Keppra (max dosage) and Depakote (sprinkles--very low dose), so she titrated him up on the Depakote so we could get rid of the Lamotrigine.

In this case surgery is the only treatment.
233488 tn?1310693103 lamotrigine, nortriptyline, carbamazepine and sertraline. Sometimes glasses with blue/yellow filters or FL-41 spectrum filters are helpful.
1204528 tn?1588786333 Maybe the carbamazepine, did you try it's derivative with fewer side effects called oxcarbazepine? Might as well be symptom of anxiety.
1756969 tn?1332437163 ve been taking Lamotrigine for over a year. It caused no changes in my weight or appetite. And I swear by the medication.
Avatar f tn I think they're confused. If you read the full prescribing information, it's the PILL that screws with the lamotrigine, not the other way around. It's not like a lot of other anticonvulsants. From http://epilepsy.med.nyu.edu/treatment/medications/lamotrigine "Lamotrigine has no effect on other seizure medicines. And unlike some other seizure medicines, it does not reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills.
Avatar f tn I take Carbamazepine for ATN and have a new, rare reoccurring rash on my legs. My Dr. says they are not related, but when I researched it there were a few articles that indicated Carbamazepine could cause the rash.
Avatar f tn Hi, sorry you're experiencing all those symptoms, migraines can cause all sorts of problems, i was prescribed Carbamazepine for L'hermittes symptoms but i didn't tolerate it very well, I did experience dry mouth/throat along with few other unpleasant side effects, It makes sense to start with the lower dose and build up but I would discuss with your GP again if your not sure.
Avatar m tn Was administered Dilantin 3 separate times in life, lamotrigine (exacerbated episodes) and carbamazepine in adult life which only helped episodes for first two months. All three prescriptions were for the idea of Epilepsy which is misdiagnosed. Every EEG (except the video EEG 2000 stated above) including a video home surveillance EEG in 2005 showed no signs of seizure/miscommunication in brain. Several MRIs all unremarkable and VNG done in 2016 unremarkable results.
Avatar m tn Hi, thanks for this. I'm seeing neurology soon but neurology took me off depakote because it makes me twitch and tremor in my hands. Awful drug. I've been on Carbamazepine which made me feel awful. But I've been on Lamotrigine too which gave me no side effects so if they think it's epilepsy, I'll go back on that if possible.
