Lamotrigine and lamictal

Common Questions and Answers about Lamotrigine and lamictal

lamictal

I was diagnosed as bipolar type 2 back in June 2005, and since then have been on Lamotrigine (Lamictal) on an increasing dosage. I have been at the max dosage that my doctor said is allowed (350 mg/day). So that means over 4 years that I've been taking this drug. I have found that since taking lamictal, my depression has all but vanished, but it does not control my manic behavior at all. So as an anti-depressant, I think it's very effective for me.
Yes I was on Lamictal for over 7 years and during that time it would at times run of our efficacy and the dose need to be raised. My psychiatrist told me that can happen although each person responds differently to each medication. Raising the dose should work as long as its with the specific limit that it can be prescribed at but if at any point it stops working completely you could ask your psychiatrist about other available options.
I happen to take Lamictal (Lamotrigine) which has not affected my weight and I don't have any side effects from it. Others may have different experiences. Listen to your doctor and try the medications he/she prescribes.
-Brother, 46, is on 300mg Lamictal and has had tics since start of this med. -Tics are similar to the sleep transition tics (thalamic); except that they occur 10-20 times a night, duration 1-3sec, with periperal limb involvement -SWS sig. reduced in 3 sleep studies, no 'frank' sleep apnea -NFLE has not been confirmed -Loss of short term memory and concentration (not working) Looking to get a referral to Dr.
The generic for Lamictal is lamotrigine. I a have heard of it being abused. It is an anti-seizure medicine commonly used for bipolar disorder. Pharmacies often do not always mark on the bottle when they do not fulfill a script. I would not automatically rush to judgement. I am confused when you say that he is addicted to opiates. Soma is not an opiate. It is a sedative, used for muscle relaxation.
I bet it isn't the lamictal, it's your worries and depression. living on the edge of a cliff all the time and feeling insecure makes the person concentrate less, have volatile memory especially the short one. This happens to all of us. I believe you should do something regarding your depression. Whereas it says that antidepressants worsen mania causing rapid cycling and mixed states, but most BP pts take them to be able to function.
Everyone has to increase the dosage of lamictal (lamotrigine) slowly starting at 25mg. I have been on as high as 400mg but had to drop back down to 200mg because it is an antiseizure med and I am having ECT and 400mg would interfere with that. I have been on it for years and didn't see any difference in weight with it. Other drugs I am taking are not so weight friendly. I am now exercising and trying to diet but little success. How did you lose your weight?
I am on Lamotrigine/lamictal and it has worked wonders for my mood. Very few side effects too. Side effects of drugs scare me too. I do a LOT of research as well. I've decided I like me on meds better than I like me off meds. I take an antipyschotic too (Geodone). That is scary crap. Took me a long time to start taking that pill. I was pretty desperate though. It helped a lot. I like me when I take these two meds. I am scared of what I become (an ultra rapid cycling mess) without them.
Hi, I recently started Lamictal too and experienced the same thing. Just very light bleeding but then it stopped after about 4 days. My doctor said it may have been break through bleedign. I have the implanon and havn't had a period in months so it through me for a loop too. But i think it is okay now.
I started Lamotrigine (lamictal generic) 2 weeks ago. On day 9, I developed severe diarrhea and cramps. It was slowed down with 1 pill of Immodium, but after 2 days I decided to eat a "regular" meal and got diarrhea again. So it's been on an off for 6 days, and this morning it was worse than it was the first day! I am worried that it is from the Lamotrigine because I don't feel bad otherwise, no fever, etc. I just can't be too far from a bathroom.
Perhaps you could ask your psychiatrist about that. And be patient. You won't see an effect from Lamictal until it reaches 150 mg. and as you know there is a specific titration schedule (I'm sure your psychiatrist has told you this) for raising the dose. Discuss it further with them but I'd say give Lamictal a chance but before you change anything ask them. Please. Seriously.
The decision of dosage adjustments depends on the doctor’s discretion and varies person to person. Do write to us again with more information. Take care and good luck!
I am a fan of Lamotrigine only for the fact that I have never been fully controlled and I am still not but my Consultant put me on Lamotrigine and it seemed to settle my seiziours ALOT where as the other medications (and ive been on ALOT of them) didnt really do much for me at all some of them actually made me worse. I have never experienced any problems with Lamontrigine just good things.
I was not sure what was causing the muscle spasms, all I know is that there seemed to be an association between taking 50mg of Atenolol and difficulty sleeping that was punctuated by tremors. The Lamictal and Atenolol were suspect because they are the newest medications prescribed to myself. The atenolol was prescribed for tremors and tachycardia. I have asked my psychiatrist and family physician about an EEG and EMG, but both are skeptical. Right now I am taking 100 mg of Lamictal 37.
Hello Again Xanweaner; I am unable to access the article "Concurrent Lamictal...ECT..." Do I have to pay to subscribe and pay for the article? I am clumsy and suspicious about buying these kinds of things online. Can you advise?
It has helped with my spacey feeling, twitching which I experienced to a great extent is gone, and I have no fatigue, no side effects either! But, I still get into the cramped hand and arm positions. Lately I also have very tight musscles in my leg. I was reading back through a few questions I had asked here over the past several months or so. Lamotrigine was mentioned as an antiepileptic which is sometimes given for Movement disorders.
I understand as do most people, that the big pharmas have to make note of every single thing that could go wrong, no matter how rare it is, look at you and the rash from Lamictal.........if your doctor had informed you of that possibility and how important it would be for you to see him if a rash appeared, you wouldn't have had to write to some forum to find out what was going on. I also realize that most doctors don't want to tell us all the possibilities.........
Are There specific concerns about Lamictal® and pregnancy? Lamotrigine can interfere with folic acid. Therefore, female patients should be aware that lamotrigine may increase the chances of birth defects in babies. New information suggests that babies exposed to lamotrigine during the first three months of pregnancy may have a higher chance of being born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. Babies born with cleft lip or cleft palate have a gap in the upper lip or roof of the mouth.
I've been on lamotrigine (lamictal) for years. I've taken many other medications for bp and not much has worked for whatever reasons. I did not find relief until I got on lamictal. It took several months to work the dose up a little at a time and some fine tuning to get the dose right. Now I'm on 300mg lamotrigine. I had some tremors and had some balance problems on the higher doses. I also take 450mg lithium carbonate and 60mg methylphenidate (this one's in the morning).
I have been on Lamictal and Cymbalta for some time. I was taking 100mg of the Lamictal, but was recently increased to 200mg. I asked to be taken off the Cymbalta because I thought I was having a bad side effect from it....profuse sweating! But it hasn't stopped. I am active and go to the gym on a regular basis and it's just plain embarrassing having sweat pouring off my head & body. It also smells like ammonia. I am ruining a lot of my clothes and it's maddening.
is this mix ok? i used to take Wellbutrin and Lamictal, but now only Lamictal. my therapist feels i need something to boost my concentration and Wellbutrin didnt work.
I have Bipolar I, and have been experiencing a great deal of relief from Lamictal/Lamotrigine for several years. However, my psychiatrist is starting to raise the dose, and I don't know why. I haven't been with this psychiatrist for very long. I was on the usual dose of 200mg/day; then, she raised it to 400mg/day. I'm not sure I felt much better from raising it, but it's possible, so I wasn't worried. Now, though, she wants to raise it to 600mg/day. This is far above the recommended dose.

Lamotrogine is Lamictal and has been a miracle medication for me. I have Bipolar and occasional seizures brought on by stress, I also have PTSD.
I was on lithium and Lamictal together while transitioning to Lamictal alone (as the mood stabilizer, I needed other medications as well) and I did not encounter a problem though I found Lamictal alone (at a proper dose) more tolerable and effective but that was my reaction specifically as you state.
HI, Lamotrigine or Lamictal is an anticonvulsant drug used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. There are rare cases wherein female patients experienced vaginitis, dysmenorrhea and absence of menstruation during Lamictal intake.
