Lamictal vs zyprexa

Common Questions and Answers about Lamictal vs zyprexa

lamictal

Avatar m tn Do you mean that is your starting dosage? You have to ramp up Lamictal dosage slow. I am at 200Mgs of Lamictal a day and it took me 2 months to reach that effective dosage.
Avatar n tn Lamictal is a mood stabilizer with anti-depressant qualities - some even say it works better then other classes of anti-depressants - Zyprexa and Lamictal are both common treatments for bipolar. If the BP is hard to treat, there may be other meds added on, but she's on a good combination. Ask your pharmacist as well.
874521 tn?1424116797 I know for a fact that the zyprexa causes drowsiness. I have been on 10mg for over a year and it makes me sleep well through the night and into the morning. I'm not sure about the other drug, but the one thing I am sure of is don't let him just get off the zyprexa "cold turkey"!!! Read on here under zyprexa withdrawls about what most of us feel when we are coming off of this drug. You will be surprised on what it does to someone's well being....
Avatar f tn I just take Zyprexa alone and it works for me. I am lucky I only need 2.5 mg it has a pretty strong effect on me. Because of the weight gain I want to know if anyone has found an alternative that works as well as zyprexa?
Avatar n tn I've been taking zyprexa for almost 6 months and am still suffering side effects. I get blurred vision and fogginess which makes it hard to concentrate. I'm sleepy all of the time and could fall asleep at my desk if I could. I've had bipolar disorder for 10 years and have never been sleepy all of the time. In the past, prior to this medicine, I've always had troubles sleeping. Does anyone else have the same problems as me?
1134609 tn?1269272200 I too tried Zyprexa, Trileptal and Tegretol, none of which helped with the depression-- they were just too sedating, and Zyprexa made me gain weight. Lamictal does not seem to have that effect, however, but you'll have to try it out and see. Good Luck! Hang in there too!
Avatar f tn I just started it. 150mg at bedtime. Right now I'm at a healthy weight of 120 and am 5'4. I also take 300mg of lamictal and 2mg of clonazepam as needed. Did serequel make you gain? I'd rather not gain weight.
559058 tn?1215810834 I'm bp, been on Zyprexa for 5 yrs off and on, gained weight of course, and know that it has tons of other side effects. But I know Depakote is not without side effects either -- like constipation, liver damager etc. What's worse? Plus, I know it causes weight gain also. What do you guys think? Thanks!
Avatar n tn The rash side effect of Lamictal can be fatal so thank goodness you are okay. I had not heard of the diabetes with Zyprexa before, I would read the fine print on your med insert for sure. I wonder what Topomax would do for you or possibly Abilify which has fewer side effects, especially in the eating department. Ya know we are unfortunately part of the pharmaceutical rat race and often times doctors have more experience with one med or another due to what the drug reps are pushing.
Avatar f tn Lithium is a first line mood stabilizer and Zyprexa has a good effect in this area but for me Lamictal had the best effect on rapid cycling but as each person responds differently to each medication speak to your psychiatrist about available options. Keep a mood tracker here as well and print out the results for them to assist with them knowing exactly what is going on.
Avatar n tn Hello, can you please tell me if it is Ok to use Zyprexa for anxiety as it has been prescribed. Is it true, it can cause diabetes and if so after how long ?
Avatar f tn I had to quit Latuda because it made me manic- irritable, restless, agitated, racing thoughts, the whole bit. It started about 2 hours after I took the med. This is the number one reported side effect from it, although they call it "restlessness" and not mania. In my case, it was definately mania, not just physical restlessness. I'm on Seroquel XR now which works great but I've gained 14 lbs. in 3 weeks.
874521 tn?1424116797 zyprexa, valproate. Yet i like names like abilify, lamictal, seroquel also with no explanation. Had I been a pdoc i would have announced my theory: The only pills I see suitable for BP pts are: lamictal+seroquel. I have many reasons for this although i didn't try this combination because i want to exhaust all other possibilities.
698408 tn?1256958348 If given a choice between an antipsychotic (Zyprexa) and a mood stabilizer (Depakoate) I would choose Depakoate. Zyprexa does have the risk of tardive dyskinesia. If a person needs an antipsychotic of course they have to take one but Depakoate does not have that risk. Zyprexa also has a severe risk for diabetes. All of the atypicals do but Zyprexa is most likely to.
Avatar m tn Then, about 2 ½ years ago I had a near-psychotic meltdown, mostly about the devil and evil spirits, and was diagnosed with OCD and prescribed Anafranil and Zyprexa, which helped with the irrational thinking and obsessive thoughts a little. Between now and then, I have been diagnosed with OCD, Social anxiety disorder, GAD, major depressive disorder, ADHD, and most recently, aspergers/high functioning autism.
Avatar f tn the other 3 I cant remember but it made me feel so doped up I switched docs and and she put me on 2 celexa and zyprexa and they have worked wonderful for me. No dopey drugged feeling. Just nice stable everyday normal living. Its seems to me that alot of docs tend to overprescribe when all is need for bi polar is a good mood stabilizer and a good anti depressant I could be wrong since I am not a doc . I am just a bi polar (in remission lol)who has been on alot of meds.
Avatar n tn As anti-psychotics can create diabetes and tardive dyskinesia if a person has straight bipolar (as opposed to bipolar with psychotic features where an anti-psychotic is absolutely needed) there is the potential to change to a mood stabilizer, none of which have the risk of creating tardive dyskinesia and out of all of them Lamictal has the least potential for weight gain and is generally safe and effective. Perhaps you could ask your psychiatrist about Lamictal.
1257808 tn?1322762215 When I was on Lamictal and Seroquel, my psychiatrist stopped it due to leukopenia (low white blood cells). Now again with new meds (zyprexa and citalopram) I have leukopenia.
Avatar f tn s making me absolutely miserable and I feel like I am going insane. I have seen a doctor who has prescribed me Latuda and Lamictal. I started out taking Zoloft but it made me much more manic which is how the bi polar diagnosis was made. In addition to the racing thoughts, extreme anxiety I am also severely depressed to the point I am not functioning well. Before the Latuda I was on Zyprexa which made me suicidal. My question is could the Latuda be contributing to the racing thoughts?
628714 tn?1268238196 Hi Zyprexa (generic Olanzapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication. Zyprexa is used to treat the symptoms of psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression). The most commonly reported side effects are sleepiness or excessive sleeping, dizziness, dry mouth and weight gain. Other side effects include akathisia (an inability to sit still), constipation, dizziness, orthostatic hypotension and tremors.
Avatar m tn I've been dealing with bipolar disorder since 2012 and I've gone through 4 hospitalizations due to the manic/psychotic breaks. I've also suffered a few milder hypomanias during last 6 years but I feel exhausted ALL the time I'm not in a mania. I could sleep for hours and still feel extremely tired. It's gone as far as I am calling sick from time to time because I literally am not capable of getting out of bed.
Avatar n tn Went to therapist today, then to prescribing Phyciatrist changed meds to immediate Zyprexa 10mil to calm her down and Lithium. She has only taken the 10mil of Zyprexa and is totally out of it (like drunk or something) sleeping. I'm worried.....already know to cut down the Zyprexa but am afraid to even give her the lithium. Please help...all I get is the same run around and answers from every dr. even the hospital ER....Can you advise what to do?
Avatar n tn Antipsychotics will all cause tardive dyskinesia and put a person at risk for diabetes and Zyprexa is the prime offender for diabetes. But when Zyprexa worsened my paranoia years ago and it happenned to a friend of mine I knew what was going on. But that's not a "common" side effect. As for "safe" we should be factual.
Avatar f tn ADs and BP disorder are always an interesting conundrum. I know that there have been extensive studies regarding a Zyprexa/Prozac combination for BP disorder. Those studies have shown to be effective. If you and your pdoc are thinking about going with Prozac, I would probably look into using it with Zyprexa. The ADs can be hit or miss, especially with BP folks. I know that I (along with many BP friends) have had serious issues with all of the ADs.
Avatar f tn I thought you werent supossed to be on antidepressants if you are bipolar? Now Im on lamictal 200mg (mood stabilizer), 37.5mg effexor (i weaned off from 150 but had to go bk on because was having uncontrollabe panic), 2.5mg zyprexa and ativan as needed. Any advice?
Avatar n tn I just posted this on another website - I figure what the heck - the more the merrier! I will copy and paste! (It seems that more people are out and about here_ So, I want to make this a short post but don't know how I will manage that! About 4 or 5 years ago I became very very depressed. There was a lot of things going on - it was horrible.
