When I went through this issue myself I asked to be changed to another mood stabilizer and I found Lamictal to be the most tolerable in this regard, certainly as regards weight gain but each person responds differently to each medication. Sometimes if a person is developing severe side effects from a medication it is worthwhile to consider available options. Speak to your psychiatrist about this.

Ive been on lamictal for around 5 months. added to depakote and has changed my life (diagnosis bipolar). i can actually get off the couch. I have been trying to lose weigth for a while with no avail. Started lamictal: nausea and some light cramping. although hungry, sometimes I can't eat. Am down from 118# to 112# and continue to fall without effort. even eating chocolate. just wondering if I should be concerned something else is going on.

I believe it was the Topamax that was responsible for some weight loss, but it could have been Lamictal, too. I remember being specifically told that if I had winter carbohydrate craving they would probably go away from one or the other. Unfortunately, they were not effective for my bipolar. I have not taken an SSRI in years after bad experiences with Zoloft and Paxil so I can't advise you about the Prozac.

My question is have you experienced one or both of the side effects? Is hair loss always accompanied by weight loss or vice versa? Are there any tricks you've developed that really work to prevent hair loss? The other option, the name I've spaced on, has hair loss and weight gain. Lose all around. Also, how well has topamax worked for anyone using is as a mood stabilizer?

Geodon is now approved for Bipolar, and is what I take. It's nuetral for weight gain. Zoloft can have weight loss as a side effect, and Topomax has weight loss as a side effect. All three of these meds combined and I lost weight without even trying. Of course when I lost my insurance and wasn't able to take them any more I gained it all back in record time. 20 pounds in a month. Of course Iwas very depressed and eating really badly, as well as being sedentary.

It is an anticonvulsant used for epilepsy, migraine prevention, and off-label used for bipolar and weight loss. I have read good reviews for people using it for bi-polar. However one lady who had this problem asked her pdoc and he advised selenium and zinc for med induced hair loss when she started losing hair (she thought Lamictal was the culprit but could not be sure) her hair loss stopped falling immediately. She took 200mcg of selenium (not mg) and 50 mg of zinc a day.

Hello dear, I took Lamictal for 5 years & never experienced any weight gain issues from the medicine itself. If my weight ever did fluctuate during that period it was because I was depressed & eating a lot with no exercise. But then every time I would fix my eating habits and worked out, my weight was back to normal (skinny).

Need input on coming off depakote. Currently taking 750 mg x 3 daily. I USED to have seizures due to a stroke, but I have been seizure free for a year. I am on 30 mg of abilify & 200 mg of lamictal. I want to come off the depakote due to weight gain & memory loss/confusion. My Neurologist has given her approval, but I do not want a manic episode at all. Can you help?

My experience about 15 years ago with Effexor was the zaps and diarrhea with each meal, so maybe that would be good for weight loss, too- lol :) Good luck.

Remember that nothing that works will be side effect free for everyone. Lamictal is weight neutral, and is great for bipolar II, and packs most of its weight against depression. Geodon and Abilify are also supposed to be weight neutral, Geodon a little more so than Abilify. Trileptal is weight neutral as well, but its use in bipolar is technically off-label.

I gained 50 pounds in two years, since then I have been the excat same weight(for the past two years). I also just found out I have hypothyrodism. I started medication for that and go back shortly to test my TSH. My psychiatrist told me that as soon as my TSH levels are in normal range we will have me start get off the celexa. The problem is, I don't go back to him for three months.

I take Trazodone for sleep. It is an older antidepressant with hypnotic components. The nice thing is it is cheap and works well. I take 50mg an hour before bedtime. Wellbutrin can be stimulating. Lamictal can be mildly sedating.I forget which topomax is. I was only on it for a few months. Made me stupid.

The Lamictal is new as of last week. I have been on Lithium now for 3 yrs. It does fine for me as far as weight. My hair did grow back but it is a bit on the thin side. When I shower, I maybe loose a 2 strands, that's it. As for suggestions for combinations. I wish I had the magic answer. There are so many drugs, types of drugs and drug combinations that it's impossible to answer. Everyone's chemistry is different so we don't know how a drug will be until we try it.

I started Lamictal very slowly, 25mg each week and I am now at 200mg. Last week the memory loss started. Yesterday confusion started along with memory loss. It's pretty bad. I'll tell or share something to diff family members and then they will tell me I already told them. I have no recollection. I can't seem to comprehend things. I will be told something and it just doesn't register, can't understand what they are saying, even after explaing it a few times.

I've been taking Lamictal for 4 years. I've had terrible irritability!!!! I read that 1 in 20-30 people will actually get worse as far as irritability and sleeplessness and anxiety go. Mine was just the bad irritability.
