Lamictal for weight loss

Common Questions and Answers about Lamictal for weight loss

lamictal

Hello dear, I took Lamictal for 5 years & never experienced any weight gain issues from the medicine itself. If my weight ever did fluctuate during that period it was because I was depressed & eating a lot with no exercise. But then every time I would fix my eating habits and worked out, my weight was back to normal (skinny).
hi everybody, i read in more than one forum that lamictal cause serious short memory loss, this was totally new to me.i have been on lamictal 200mg for three years i used to suffer from short memory loss since high school and thought it was due to my depression (as i was diagnosed bach then).....my short memory is getting really worse and i did not think it could be lamictale..........
I hate it when doctors do not listen because two hospitalizations could have been avoided. My post-traumatic is way off. In regards to the weight loss. When started Lamictal had trouble eating as well. Dropped some weight. Now 1 year later and 94 pounds lighter I feel great! Still losing too. I started at 296 pounds now 202. I have never been able to lose weight. Now able to walk great distances and attend gym. No one would listen to me.
Ive been on lamictal for around 5 months. added to depakote and has changed my life (diagnosis bipolar). i can actually get off the couch. I have been trying to lose weigth for a while with no avail. Started lamictal: nausea and some light cramping. although hungry, sometimes I can't eat. Am down from 118# to 112# and continue to fall without effort. even eating chocolate. just wondering if I should be concerned something else is going on.
My answer to you is NOT based upon experience as i haven't tried either but rather upon readings. As for depakote , it has 3 major drawbacks 1. serious weight gain 2. hair loss 3. produces ovarian cysts not good for young females As for lamictal, I never read bad things except a rumor sometime ago about possibility of getting Meningoencephalitis or rather meningoencephalomyelitis but apparently it wasn't proceed as perhaps lack orf real proof or sound evidence.
Do any of you have any experience with Prozac and Lamictal as far as weight or loss? I can't go back up to 240lbs as my frame won't support it, and currently I am heading that way on Zyprexa and Lexapro. Help, feeling good is great, but dying of obesity is not.
The docs took me off Keppra and put me on Lamictal. I was also put on Lexapro (10mg) for suicidal thoughts. A year later I got Stevens Johnsons Syndrome as a result of the Lamictal. I was then put on Lyrica which made me bloat and gain weight. Then I was on Topamax. I stopped all seizure meds in June of 2009 and am seizure free. However, I just stopped taking Lexapro last week due to 10lb weight gain. I am very active - just ran a 1/2 marathon and am planning another in June.
And if you do look into natural remedies make sure you discuss these with your doctor as well. For example, I cannot take any health supplements for weight loss as they trigger manic episodes. Always run stuff past your doctor, just part of dealing with the bipolar. Hope this helps.
I have been on Lexapro for over a year and Zoloft for a few years before that. I have gained over 30 pounds in 4 years. I am weaning from Lexapro currently. I started from 10 mg 3 weeks ago to 5 mg last week and 2.5 mg this week. Since I began to wean, I've stuck to a very heart healthy diet with low fat and calories, high fiber. I've used an elliptical trainer every other day for at least 30 minutes and I'm keeping an intense pace. I haven't lost an ounce. It is a bit discouraging.
He also mentioned the side affect of weight loss (which will be a blessing if this is in fact true since I could stand to lose some weight). He started me out on 25 mg for a week, 50 for the second week, 75 for the 3rd week and 100 4th week. Can anyone tell me how they felt on the Topomax as far as the weight loss went? Did they feel not hungry? Nauseaous? Stomach pain? How long before they started to lose weight?
Does anyone have a suggestion on a replacement for Lamictal? I've also been diagnosed with Bi-Polar NOS. Lamictal works okay for my mood, but the anxiety is still bothersom.
Geodone isn't prescribe for weight loss, although it is weight neutral.
I have been on Lamictal for years for Bipolar Disorder. Just recently, I have been having really strange dreams, and at some point, it always turns into a nightmare. It doesn't always stay bad, but at some point during the night, I wake up sweating. And its not just an I'm hot sweating, its like I wake up with my clothes wet sweating. I'm usually not hot, but I have to kick off my blanket to try and get my body heat back down.
Important Safety Information about LAMICTAL Prescription LAMICTAL Tablets are not for everyone. Most people who take LAMICTAL tolerate it well. Common side effects with LAMICTAL include dizziness, headache, blurred or double vision, lack of coordination, sleepiness, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, tremor, and rash. LAMICTAL may cause other side effects not listed here. If you develop any side effects or symptoms you are concerned about, or if you need more information, call your doctor.
(Even though not bi-polar, Lamictal is working well with the wellbutrin for me) The Wellbutrin/Lamictal caused a 50lb weight loss but I was nauseous for months. The Wellbutrin doesn't help with the anxiety I was having so I had Lexapro added. That did make me gain weight so I went off it and just take Klonopin for anxiety. Now I am having more problems with depression so my doctor increased my Lamictal dose. If you take Lamictal, you MUST increase/decrease doses SLOWLY.
Now that I have stopped taking Geodon, I would like to know if anyone out there has been through the same experience with weight gain AND if weight loss is a side effect of coming off of Geodon? If not, is it easier to lose weight once you are off of the medication? I have my mind back and now I want my body back! Hope to hear some good news!
Did anyone who went back on it continue to lose weight? I was told it didn't work the second time around for weight loss. Also, if I am refilling my prescription after being off it for 2 months, should I titrate up? Thanks.
Did anyone took Lamictal for anxiety and depression? Did it work, and how soon did it started working? Did anyone started feeling normal and had their old life back? Did anyone felt the itching, and how long it lasted? I am very worried, i need this med to be working for me soon because i going through very tough time in my relationship. If anyone know anything about it, pleaselet me know. It willbe veryhelpful.
Because of the potential weight loss side effect, Welbutrin is going thru clinical trials for weight loss. I'm about to start the blind study. I might get Welbutrin, Naltrexone or a placebo. My question before I start the trial is, what are the side effects if I'm not depressed and don't smoke?!
I have been on lamictal for about 7 months now and I have mixed feelings about it. When I started it it worked wonders. I really liked it, I felt like it helped keep my moods in check and the best part is that I had no side effects what so ever. On the other hand, when I climbed to the does of 150mg I started having really bad anxiety. I couldn't go 2 or 3 hours without having another anxiety attack and all of the time in between were filled with worried thoughts.
I think I can help a bit with your questions, in the past year I have been taking fur out of those five; no lamictal for me..though currently being considered. At my worst I was extremely debilitated and there was talk of admitting to to a unit, fot months I could barely function, the drugs as they came on board slowly helped me, but were no miracle cure.
Trazedone and xanax can cause both weight gain and weight loss. Also, once you start losing weight, after the initial weight loss, the pace at which you lose weight decreases. You then need to balance your diet and exercise such that the pace of weight loss increases until you achieve the target weight.
However one lady who had this problem asked her pdoc and he advised selenium and zinc for med induced hair loss when she started losing hair (she thought Lamictal was the culprit but could not be sure) her hair loss stopped falling immediately. She took 200mcg of selenium (not mg) and 50 mg of zinc a day.
If you do get relief from taking an antidepressant such as Cymbalta and it does result in improving your mood then you will probably experience the return of normal appitite. This in itself can cause weight gain. Is your depression causing a loss of appitite for you?
The Neurologists tried me on about 8 different meds before they found that lamictal, in the right dose, works for me. Surrounding events I have auditory aphasia, very sensitive to noises, speech difficulties, mobility difficulties, etc. In other words, when I have one I basically shut down and it takes about 3 days to get back to normal. Everybody is different though, but I wanted you to know that these things can be normal for the kind of seizures that you have depending on where they are.
Geodon is now approved for Bipolar, and is what I take. It's nuetral for weight gain. Zoloft can have weight loss as a side effect, and Topomax has weight loss as a side effect. All three of these meds combined and I lost weight without even trying. Of course when I lost my insurance and wasn't able to take them any more I gained it all back in record time. 20 pounds in a month. Of course Iwas very depressed and eating really badly, as well as being sedentary.
