Lamictal for bipolar and pregnancy

Common Questions and Answers about Lamictal for bipolar and pregnancy

lamictal

Avatar f tn Does anyone have any experience of planning a pregnancy having had episodes of bipolar disorder? I have met people who realised they had the illness after they had given birth and they said that was the reason they had only had one child - i.e they wouldn't knowingly take the risk of relapse associated with pregnancy and childbirth.
Avatar f tn ve just found out I am pregnant and I have been taking Abilify (Aripirazole) and Lamictal (Lamotrigine) for the last year, against bipolar disorder, my doctor recommended to reduce it slowly and then stop it. He said that I have taken it so far wouldn't harm the baby. I am still very worried and wondered if anybody has any experience with this. Thank you!
Avatar n tn she really needs her ibgyns advice on meds..and the love n support of family for the rest pregnancy brings out hormones in any woman so it may be harder for her than most or she may have an easy time, only time will tell..
Avatar n tn t like the sexual side effects. Lamictal, though, seems to only be approved for treating bipolar disorder and epilepsy. I have never been diagnosed with bipolar disorder nor do I have epilepsy. Is my psychiatrist really going out on a limb prescribing Lamictal for anxiety/depression?
Avatar f tn Lamictal or Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant drug used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder. Use during pregnancy is recommended only if benefits outweigh potential risks. Taking this drug during the first trimester of pregnancy may lead to abnormalities such as cleft palate in babies. It can also be found in breast milk. This is why breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
925572 tn?1246540031 DOCTOROFMIND a psychiatrist on youtube said recently in a video there are a couple of safe psych meds for pregnancy, it wasn't one of them however and he only listed prozac and haldol although NAMI's website says prozac possibly causes serious birth problems and as for haldol it says you should tell your doctor if you're pregnant but says nothing about special precautions with pregnancy. Hell he doesn't even like prescribing meds unless he absolutely has to.
1116472 tn?1260075052 i know it is also a seizure med, and my bipolar issue is WAY more important. How much of the lamictal will be helping for my actual bipolar? I'm trying to understand, the doctor said it will treat both, but i need to be sure that the motivation was not for epilepsy, because that takes a backseat to bipolar, as i have only had a couple seizures, and am not diagnosed epileptic, and my MRI showed nothing of the sort.
Avatar f tn I had been doing so well on the lamictal and cymbalta that I thought I had no need for psychiatrist for the last 10 months or so. Now, bam, I need one and who wants to start with a patient that already has SJS. When I had dbl couverage insurance I could get in anywhere. (least of problems) 4. I've seen, neurologist, internal med.

I am thinking of trying lamicatal b/c I have read alot about it and heard of many ppl who really feel good on it w/o the weight gain..I feel I am basically on my own in finding a med that works for me b/c my psy.
Avatar f tn I have used lamictal for my bipolar 1 condition. It is a fantastic mood stabiliser especially for those with labile type symptoms. It is 1 of the newer ones they are using and I highly recommend it.
994257 tn?1266242692 I am currently taking 400mg of Lamictal ODT for bipolar II disorder and to help in the treatment of migraines my periods are coming later and later every month and they are really light. Is this common for this medication. Also I'm not actively trying to get pregnant but if I do what are the risks of staying on it or should I stop immediately?
Avatar f tn s the seroquel or the combination with lamictal, or if my brain is just fried from being depressed and bipolar for the last 30 yrs and on all sorts of different meds that work for a while, then need to be changed, over and over again. Life is a b*tch sometimes. But I try to look on the bright side even when there doesn't seem to be much of a bright side! Hope you feel better soon.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with BP II with more noticeable depression as well. I'm actually on a combo of Wellbutrin/Abilfy and it's the PERFECT combo for me. I was on lamictal and it made me crazy and had awful side effects. I've never taken Prozac or Lithium, as I've found a combo that works for me. I take 250mg Wellbutrin twice a day and 15mg of Abilify. I also take an anti-anxiety med and sleeping pills as needed.
Avatar f tn I just found out that i am almost 5 weeks pregnant and I am currently on lamictal and seroquel but I know that i have to stop them since I am pregnant. What medicines do you know that I will have to take since I am pregnant with BP1. Will i still have to take meds?
997928 tn?1252444237 I've been taking Lamictal for about 3 months, but can't stand the side effects anymore! I feel like I traded anxiety for ADD. I can't focus, have short-term memory loss, speak slowly, and have an exceding amount of mucus in my throat. I was taking 300mg. Now I'm at 225mg. It has helped to take down the dose, but it's still very annoying! I take it with 300mg of Effexor XR which I have been taking for several years.
Avatar f tn m told can cause anxiety) and Lamictal (mood stabilizer for Bipolar). Buspar works great for me and is the kind of med that you can feel accumulate in your system. That way, you don't suffer if missing a dose. I take 10mg 3 times a day. It used to just be 2x, but my job got stressful and we made an adjustment. I was originally given Xanax which was a huge mistake on my GP's part.
Avatar n tn Lamictal is a mood stabilizer and is generally used for bipolar. Why not ask them if they changed or updated your diagnosis because in someone with bipolar anti-depressents can worsen mania. Lamictal is a good mood stabilizer and has a strong anti-depressent effect. The problem is it can be only be raised at a very slow rate so if you have symptoms in the meantime they might give you something else to keep things stable.
Avatar f tn Actually I eventually had to be transferred off Lamictal for that very reason although it was quite effective for close to 10 years.. From what my psychopharmcologist said (this could be verified by going to the medication website) "Lamictal can worsen mania at higher levels". That doesn't sound like that is what the cause is from what you are describing as it also has to be at a therapeutic dose to work. And during pregnancy any aspect of bipolar can worsen.
Avatar f tn Just started lamictal for bipolar. Been very depressed, lazy.
1756969 tn?1332437163 Lamictal is a antiseizure med that is also a mood stabilizer that is primarily used for bipolar and seizure disorders. Some pdocs give lamictal to people with BPD to help with the mood fluxuations (lower mood changes than with bipolar).
Avatar m tn how does this help for your bipolar..im on the hi end of bipolar..but not like really super hyper!! was on serquil to help me..had to stop it was causing my heart rate to go way up.........please explain??
Avatar f tn I found that it did not work for my Bipolar even though i was on 800mg and yes, you will need regular blood tests to check your liver and kidney function. If you are concerned about it talk to your Psychiatrist about other options. I did! It is your body and you do have control over what goes into it.
Avatar f tn I am bipolar, have chronic migraines, and doing IVF. I use lithium and lamictal for my mood stabilizers and will stay on them through my pregnancy. The tentative plan is to add topamax after baby for the migraines and an added mood stabilizer boost. I am loving the possible side effect of weight loss as I am overweight, but I would be devastated if I lose my hair. I may have a migraine everday but they're not so bad I would hand over my hair for relief.
Avatar f tn was diagnosed as being bipolar. The prescription that he got was a generic form of Lamictal. I visited him today & saw the pill bottle, it says "41" but there were only 9 pills left in the container. The date was Dec. 19 - that's only been 7 days ago & it says to take "1 for the lst 7 days & then take 2 a day". I asked him why there were so few in the bottle & he said the pharmacy didn't have enough to fill the entire prescription.
142722 tn?1281533616 hi guys am not pregnant yet but am planning to be,but unlike you am withdrawing lithium and lamictal before i get pregnant,,,,,actually i cannot bear the ((what ifs)) pdoc have different views when it come to meds..my current tells me lamictal is great for pregnancy and i have searched it on epilepsy.emedtv.

Avatar f tn I am Bipolar and was diagnosed about 15 years ago. Went for trial run through various medications( all in a controlled environment with a professional) and found that a combination of Camcolit, Lamicton and Seroquel worked for me. I was weened off Camcolit over 3 months as were trying for a pregnancy and were worried about the toxicity towards a possible baby.. I am now pregnant. It's very early days yet ( Just over 5 weeks). What are the risks with the medication I am still taking?
473760 tn?1215219977 I am a 28 year old woman and I have been taking Lamictal (150 mg/day) for about 6 months. I just went to have my annual physical and during some of the tests I have come to find out that I have a small ovarian cyst. I have never had this problem before and I am incredibly punctual about annual physicals and what not. This is not the first time I have had this test, and nothing has ever shown up before.
