Lamictal and lithium

Common Questions and Answers about Lamictal and lithium

lamictal

Avatar f tn has anyone had stomach problems with lithium and lamictal while takimg them at the same time?.....
Avatar m tn So I switched from lamictal and buspar to lithium about 2 weeks ago and I haven’t gotten any better, I’m actually worse and still get diarrhea but now it’s from the Lithium! Today I decided to go back on Lamictal and mix it with my Lithium after reading a lot of positive threads on the combo on the net. Today: 100mg lamictal/ 900mg lithium Next week: Going to go back to 200mg lamictal/900mg lithium Today is the best day I’ve had in weeks.
Avatar m tn I got a horrible rash with Lamictal and had to discontinue it. The p-doc then put me on Lithium and I thought I had hit rock bottom. Lithium is what they put 'really crazy people' on. LITHIUM HAS WORKED WONDERS! After about 6 days I felt better than I have felt in years! Prior to the Lithium I took Geodon, Lamictal, Seroquel, Zoloft, Ativan etc etc. None of them made me feel as even as the Lithium. I would recommend it highly!
644988 tn?1236364548 doc feels that a mood stabiliser is needed and talked about either Lamictal or Lithium... I was scared by the sound of Lithium so went for Lamictal but now I read how many weeks it'll take to build up to a useful dose and I'm not sure I can wait that long.... any thoughts?
574118 tn?1305135284 It has been the most effective drug for me so far. I also take Lamictal (among other things) and it helps a little. Lithium saved my life! Don't let it scare you. Drink lots of water. Your hands might tremble a little at first. I never had the weight gain or any bad side effects except the hand tremors. Things to look for with Lithium toxicity: Massive hand tremors bumping into things, no coordination blurry vision really bad forgetfullness extreme weakness All of these are extreme.
Avatar f tn Hi, so they changed it? I thought that you are fine on lithium. Keep us posted. Lamictal is mostly for BP2 and I know that you are BP1. So I am interested how it will work with your highs. I am very happy with it - after about 10 weeks. Hoping it will work for you well.
Avatar f tn The neurologist had seen cases of lamictal so he identified my problem. I was taken off Lamictal and a couple of weeks later I had the worse attack of all, things everywhere in my house were moving around 100X worse, I would have thought that if I had another bout with wiggling things it would be mild but no this was horrifying.
Avatar f tn I've usually always take a mood stabilizer, ie. Lamictal & a anti psychotic, ie. Seroquel. I take them in combination or ill be extremely manic. I've tried depakote & the only issue was weight gain & slight hair loss. I haven't noticed many side effects w/ lamictal. I think combining lamictal w/ lithium is a good decision.
Avatar f tn You will find unfortunately pdocs combining all sorts of drugs. I have seen lithium and lamictal which to me makes more sense, but tegretol and lamictal say i find strange yet i saw it. This proves simply that drugs are trial and error and it takes sometimes months if not years to find a good combo. The proof is that if the same patient consults 2 pdocs he will find them writing different options.
1257808 tn?1322762215 I take lamictal plus lithium. I will discuss with my doc increase lithium dose and may add another med. May add syroquil.
Avatar f tn I'm on Lithium 900mg and 150mg of Wellbutrin and 300mg lamictal. I have been on Depakote as well but my body was absorbing it to fast and I never really styed at a level good enough. Since I've been on the lith and well/lamictal I seem to cycle more then with the depakote well lamictal. Has anybody on these meds for Bipolar been at a level an even level and stayed at it. I was on 1100mg of Lithium and the Dr had to reduce due to the fact I was so flat unemotional like a robot.
Avatar f tn Hi all After a couple of weeks of reducing my 700mg daily dose, took my final Lithium tablet just over a week ago. I followed doctors orders as to the withdrawal timescale, and they said it should not cause any problems. They advised that it's just a type of salt, and is not even technically a drug, so it's not the same as withdrawing from other meds.
1134609 tn?1269272200 The depressive episodes are kind of new to me; when I was cycling a lot, it was always towards the agitated mania side of the disorder. She's been pushing Lithium off and on over the oast few months; everytime I have a down swing. But, with every increase in Lamictal, my mood stabilizes more and more. If the Lamictal isn't effective as higher doses, then so be it, I'll work with the Lithium.
735919 tn?1236444549 There are no side effects and its the best alternative to Lithium. I am on Lithium and love it, it just took quite a while for me to adjust to it. I think about four weeks. It made me really sick to my stomach you have to make sure you drink plenty of water and eat good before you take it. Also the upside to Lithium is it more natural then the other medications, and it only cost $4 at wal-mart hehehe. Lamictal is a little bit on the pricey side.
Avatar m tn only one question i can answer, yes lamictal can mix with lithium and can mix well will sodium valproex (depakote). I am astonished that you are a rapid cycler since lamictal stops that well.
574118 tn?1305135284 I stopped Lithium and took up Lamictal as well, eventually. My reasons for stopping Lithium were complicated and foolish, but I did it on my own without consulting my doctor. I did become manic, mixed, and depressed in the few months before starting Lamictal, but that's to be expected when one just stops taking a mood stabilizer. Besides that, there were really no withdrawal or side effects that I encountered, to be honest.
1102283 tn?1257817472 The problem with Lithium Carbonate is that the dosage needed is very high, and it requires blood monitoring to avoid toxicity. Lithium Orotate, on the other hand, is more bio-available, and safer than the Lithium Carbonate. The reason for this is that Lithium Orotate can be used at very low doses and is still effective. Dr. Jonathon Wright, who incidentally takes Lithium Orotate himself, recommends 10 to 20 milligrams of Lithium Orotate daily as a preventive measure. Dr.
142722 tn?1281533616 hi guys am not pregnant yet but am planning to be,but unlike you am withdrawing lithium and lamictal before i get pregnant,,,,,actually i cannot bear the ((what ifs)) pdoc have different views when it come to meds..my current tells me lamictal is great for pregnancy and i have searched it on epilepsy.emedtv.
540310 tn?1343624120 Lithium will destroy your thyroid. Please keep a check on your thyroid. I really wish doctors would quit prescibing lithium. There are so many better meds for bi polar than on ethat cn be toxic and kil body parts.
767237 tn?1332640177 Actually I remember changing from lithium to Lamictal is 1998. I was wildly manic and psychotic as well and did some destructive and self destructive stuff I'd rather not post here but it started off seeming like fun. I was on Seroquel then as well as an antipsychotic and had to raise it just to keep myself out of trouble. The problem may very well be the slow titration dose of raising Lamictal but that's FDA required for reasons discused. As regarding Lithium generally 1200 mg.
1134609 tn?1269272200 Hi, lithium didn't make me sleepy but it did make me slow on the uptake and forgetful. Lamictal kept from sleeping well but I think it's the combo of the both of them since my doc and I talked about it. I've been on both for about 2 years. It was the only thing that worked. Everything evened out after I got the doses right. What helped right away was taking both of them at night the entire dose of each. Don't take some in the morning and some at night.
895207 tn?1241549652 For this reason I have studied lithium intensely and I now know that lithium has a vast and overwhelming scientific study advantage over all other drugs in this field. Lithium requires diligent monitoring and periodic organ function testing (any deterioration will happen slowly) Using "natural" frontline treatments is irresponsible in my view. There are strategies to deal with lithium side effects and I am happy to forward info if you pm me.
625892 tn?1245963714 at first I was like, ??, because Lithium and Seroquel are two different meds, then I read that you started Lamictal. I was told that Lamictal is good for the kind of mania that causes anger, irritability, and volatile outbursts, and that it helps with lingering depression. I was on Lamictal for awhile and hated it.
4971738 tn?1390565384 It made me feel toxic, though my bloodwork was fine. I do think it healed some of my neural pathways and memory after a psychotic breakdown. I still went manic on it, so I switched to Lamictal. I know a guy who takes lithium only and is great. So great he thinks he doesn't need it anymore, about every 10 yrs. He goes back on it though. Our brains are so different.
Avatar f tn s appointment I will be asking (for the second time) for topomax instead of the lithium and lamictal...or at least instead of the lithium....lamictal I am not sure about the weight with that. I only lose my appetite if I am upset (which has always been my habit) but with these pills I have increased appetite. Risperdal was the worse for me....
Avatar f tn so long story short, say my doc yesterday and she took me off the lithium (last night was the first night i didnt take it) and wants me to wait 3 days and start Abilify. I'm reading lots of posts and seeing some pretty severe side effects. I already have really low blood pressure and it seems that is a side effect. I'm now scared to death to take this...any advice? What has it done/not done for all of you. I'm bipolar II with more noticable depression than mania. Please help.
505907 tn?1258369340 Yes a regular blood test is needed with lithium to check Lithium levels and Thryoid function - at the start its likely to be every 4-6 weeks and later every 3 months or so depending on your maintenance and how well you maintain theraputic levels.
