Avatar m tn I am a chemist and work in a QC lab. I am 6 weeks pregnant and my work does not have a policy of moving me outside the lab while pregnant. I cannot leave work so I am forced to stay working in the lab. Some of the chemicals I work with are Chloroform, toluene, acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide and others. I do not use these chemicals on a daily basis but maybe once a week or so and I work under the hood with protective gloves.
Avatar m tn Minimally, your employer should have provided you with educational materials about bloodborne pathogens which would have provided the information you received from the good folks here. In a lab setting, familiarity with common pathogens, their risk factors, and safety measures will not only prevent lab hazards and error, it will help protect your health and that of your co-workers. Best wishes.
Avatar m tn Tattoo artists/piercers are trained on safety measures regarding bloodborne pathogens and do not reuse needles and they sterilize equipment between all customers.

Avatar m tn The article you reference makes no mention of HIV - that is because HIV cannot be transmitted that way. If you have other questions about the safety of using dental equipment, we suggest visiting the Dental Health forum, as this forum is HIV specific.
Avatar n tn The reasons there are different ranges used are several; type of machine used, how the test is processed (on the equipment being used), and a little bit of "what range shall we use?" in meetings, which throws a bit of arbitrariness into the mix. Different manufacturers of the machines calibrate them in different ways, and I imagine there are factory recommendations on what range should be used with their equipment, as well.
475300 tn?1312423126 Since were talking about tattoos-I was a tattoo artist in the 1980s and early 90s.One way hepC is transmitted via tattoo is interesting. Even though everything (equipment ,etc.) has been medically sterilized in an autoclave, there's a place some inexperienced tattooists miss. First, I fill a small cup with ink, and then begin the tattoo. I dip the bloody needles into the ink, and back to your skin. No problem there. Now, I run low on ink and refill the cup.
Avatar m tn It sounds like your doctor uses the same sort of equipment that used to be routine (20+ years ago), i.e. a sterile bacteriological loop. These were the norm among many STD specialists before modern disposalble swabs becamse widely available. And my guess the scalpel blade was disposable, single-use. There is no reasonable possibility the doctor does not carefully sterilizes the loop (and scalpel, if not disposablet) between patients.
Avatar n tn Power-generating equipment, arc welding equipment and powerful magnets (as in medical devices, heavy equipment or motors) can inhibit pulse generators. Patients who work with or near such equipment should know that their pacemakers may not work properly in those conditions. Cellphonelphones available in the United States (less than 3 watts) don't seem to damage pulse generators or affect how the pacemaker works.
Avatar f tn using rapid tests in the 54 if it can be said is accurate, I have 2 times the HIV test, the first in 53 days using rapid tests, invitation how blood is taken via syringe, and to 2 on day 54, the same as taking blood samples using syringe, but I do not know the lab using test equipment such as what, but most likely only using rapid tests, because the results came out about 30 minutes, I want to ask, whether the use of rapid tests in the 54 with the results NON reaktive can say accurately , and do
Avatar m tn Hi, some days ago i tested negative for hiv by Ab and Ag methods 15 weeks after possible exposure. I was really panicked at the moment of testing and cannot remember a lot, but Before drawing my blood, the nurse asked me to clench my fist, then touched my arm to find the vein, BUT: When the nurse was drawing my blood i preferred not to look, so i remember that i only felt a very very slight and short time needle pain in my arm.
Avatar m tn m sure I had something that resembled gonorrhea (burned when I peed - discharge, and antibiotics got rid of it) and neither of them had symptoms or positive test results. However, I work for a company that builds lab equipment that tests for both strep and gonorrhea and a week or two before I showed symptoms a machine was returned from a lab that may not have been decontaminated. So, is it possible I acquired it through that? Or that I had something else and had a FP result?
Avatar f tn Ranges vary from lab to lab, depending on equipment and techniques, so you have to go by your own lab's ranges. What were your actual results?
Avatar m tn If someone else’s blood entered into your blood, there’s obviously risk for disease transmission. You’re apparently familiar with lab equipment, and I tend to doubt the authenticity of your post.
572651 tn?1530999357 If you saw my email inbox you might be surprised at some of the mail I receive. I have signed up on distribution lists for many medical sites, including Nursing Times from the UK. I received an announcement today about an upcoming convention in LONDON, that may be of interest to some of you. This convention/conference is September 29-30 and the registration is FREE. I wish I could go, but its a bit far to commute. Some of you who live in the UK may be interested, though.
Avatar f tn I am so scared:) I was at a discount store and poked my hand with a safety pin that was taken apart, basically mangled. It looked like somebody had twisted it. It was on top of a clothing rack. It drew blood on me. The store had just opened and I am wondering if someone had purposely placed it there. Can I get hiv fro it and if not can you explain why? Thank you I am so scared!!!!

Avatar f tn Hi Dr Parks, Thanks for your response. I wear protective clothing such as lab coat and gloves in the lab, and I am careful when handling chemicals so I would say the majority of exposure would be due to inhalation. A month ago, my nose and throat became really congested and dry, do you think I am not suitable to work in the lab, or do you think I will get used to it eventually? Also, would this cause nose and throat cancer??
Avatar n tn You can sleep on right side as well . You can try doing it now though to get used to it . Later on in pregnancy if you wake up on your back just roll over baby is ok . He or she will most likely make you uncomfortable before anything bad happens your body will signal a response to you most likely . I had thos worry and sometimes I still wake up on my back just get used it your side sleeping now while its still comfortable for you .
