Main motivation to fix is to make it easier for typing, and playing musical instruments (piano/guitar/violin) where I find it hampers progress in terms of agility/precision (I'm right handed, so use left hand for frets). Wondered if anyone could recommend a good way of going about this in the UK (whether NHS or private, where and how) and how long to expect heeling period to be.

My doctor prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs to take in order take care of my tendinitis from guitar playing. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if my additional gastrointestinal problems would permit the use of them since they are known for having negative effects on the digestive system. So, my question is, can anyone suggest any alternative therapies? Should I keep it in a sling and avoid my guitar for a month or two?

I'm not sure pinched nerves are caused by guitar playing. I've also been playing guitar for about that long, but I have no pinched nerves from it. I am, however, wracked with pain from other things, and if you do have pinched nerves it's likely the posture we assume when we play the guitar, with too much neck bending.

hi everyone. this is my first post in this community and i hope i'm asking in the right place. over the last few months i have developed a protrusion on the back of my index finger at the joint closest to the knuckle and another on the inside of my pinky at the same joint. they aren't especially painful except when i play the guitar, which i've done for 20+ years, or i apply pressure to them.

Picture attached. I've been taking anti-fungal meds and topical cream but it's not helping these bumps. I've had them for months. One bump on the knuckle is really sore when you touch or bump it, and I'm a guitarist so getting concerned. Any specific idea on what it is and what I could try, as I have to wait for a dermatologist for quite a while? Thanks!

ve been punching walls not to hard maybe just like a tap 4 about a year and i did it because not because i have anger problems i just thought itll make my knuckle stronger, well i been noticing that my right middle knuckle had be getting bigger, so i thought its working then igot in to a fight later on my right knuckle started to swel up it hurted a little bit but not to much just when u presss it hard then in about a week the swelling started going down but i noticed that my middle knuckl

The swelling has not gone down at all, the bruising seems to be getting worse and spreading to my lower knuckles and neighboring fingers, I can barley move the finger and can not bend the top knuckle at all, I have a pins and needles feeling in the top of the finger. I have been icing for 20 min every couple of hours and taking Tylenol to help with swelling.

I expected it to go away after a few minutes, but lingered for almost a day. I did not think much of it, but I have began to pick up the guitar this summer, and a certain chord calls for me to put a little more pressure into the back of the neck of the guitar with this same thumb. I noticed maybe a half an hour of practice that this same super sensitivity returned and again has continued to linger.

Although some hand and arm pain can be due to problems in the cervical area, because you have been playing guitar for a long time, this is likely to be what is referred to as repetitive strain injury. If you also have a job that requires a lot of repetitive use of your hands and arms, this will also add to your problem.

Hi, earlier I punched a wall out of fustration and anger. I soon regreted it. The knuckle above my third finger on my right hand is now hurting. Although it doesn't hurt that much when it is left alone, it hurts quite a bit when it is touched. Not that long ago I fractured a finger playing rugby and my knuckle feels pretty similar.

I am a guitar player and the last month month or two when playing my guitars, especially those with highly resonate bodies, I start sweating, coughing sometimes and experiencing heart palpitations. I've had thyroid issues for years but blood test shows levels are normal. I've also had a sporadic palpitation episodes for years but never anything like this. My regular doctor said the erratic heartbeats are pac's - he just doesn't know why they are happening.

After playing guitar flash (a similar game to guitar hero), 3 minutes of gameplay I look at the walls and everything I saw showers of particles ( or noise) falling, is this normal? The effect last 5 minutes. I was totally panicked I thought I was having retinal detachment. Now everytime I play this game I see these things.

Is it possible you injured it in any other way? Hit it on something and don't recall it? It doesn't seem like this would cause injury to only one finger, really. Is the finger or the knuckle swollen at all? If it is, or the pain gets worse, don't wait a month and get it checked now.

However, I am unable to comfortably use a guitar pick when playing guitar. What is going on? Should I see a medical doctor?

I have been having wrist pain for a few months. It all started when one day I played the piano and guitar for several hours. The following morning my wrist hurt and were going numb. I had no swelling. I waited a couple days, then when I thought I was ok I lifted some weights. I realized it wasn't better. School made it impossible for my wrists to recover. I tried playing the piano a week later, but they still hurt. For months I've been trying to let them recover, but they won't.

It hurts the most when I walk up stairs or walk in general. When playing football i dont feel any pain what so ever because my mind is focused on the game. I am a Defensive linemen and i am 6'5" 290 lbs if that helps. There is no bruising or swelling. Please help me! When i stop taking ibuprofen most of the immediate pain is gone. Again PLEASE HELP!

I played between sets last Saturday night after practicing my 3 songs during the day a couple of times.Well, I played like s#!t! My fingers just weren't keeping up with my brain, and I was making just one R hand mistake after another. Spastic, fatigued, numbed. I learned when I was a little kid to keep the tempo the same, even through mistakes, and many people won't even notice. But _I_ noticed! I hate this feeling of loosing my guitar ability.

the last time i rest was 8 months. it didn't hurt anymore so i just started playing a few weeks ago. the pain now is back. please help.

I have had it strapped to a buddy finger for about 4 weeks now. There is still a small amount of pain, but I am very aware of how much strength I am losing in my finger. I am due to start a Masters in university playing violin in 5 weeks so need to start rehabilitation of the finger as soon as possible, but don't want to further injure the finger.

hello, this is a strange instance, at least for me, i had an exposure maybe someone that's more experienced in the medical field would call it something else. i play music occasionally with friends in public, yesterday i didn't have my guitar with me so i needed to borrow from a friend that i didn't know much about. i went to her studio and we decided to jam together a little bit, i played her guitar during the entire time.

I posted prior about pain in my knuckle starting in my left index finger knuckle. Since then, in early January of this year it transferred to the opposite knuckle. I went in to get tests done and they came back negative for RA, OA, and gout. Everything looked good on the x-rays and there was no cartilage worn down on the joints. Since I got it tested, the pain has continued to transfer to surrounding knuckles but not to the same pain level as the original left index finger knuckle.

I have 3 herniated discs one which causes nerve pain - This became much worse after a car accident but it started before that I have osteoarthritis - This is directly linked to guitar playing and the fingers I use most are the ones that are most visibly affected. I also get this kind of pain with doing anything too much with a specific finger, say using my pointer finger to control my laptop mouse pad.

s kind of a pain, and more than a little embarrassing to be playing some good, complex fingerstyle guitar, and suddenly your left hand just decides not to work. It's kind of like the mule in the pack string that sits down, suddenly, and messes up the whole train. I have a guitar group that I meet with on a monthly basis.

it sounds like callus buildup. when i first started playing guitar my fingers would get extra skin that peeled, and after being around other musicians, i was told the fingers build calluses because of the strings, which explained why when i first started playing, my fingers were really sore, but once i got calluses, the strings didnt hurt my fingers anymore. i did end up with really thick calluses on my fingertips, but i loved playing guitar, so i didnt mind.
