Common Questions and Answers about Knuckle pain joints

finger

Avatar f tn m a 28 year old female and I have been having swelling, stiffness and pain of my right index finger knuckle for over 2 years. It started off as a little right itchy bump on my knuckle (it kind of looked like a welt) and it felt like it was on fire. I noticed it would flare up when it would rain and there was high humidity. From there it has progressed to swelling and it is usually stiff. It has been swollen for so long now that it has started to deform my joint.
Avatar n tn I posted prior about pain in my knuckle starting in my left index finger knuckle. Since then, in early January of this year it transferred to the opposite knuckle. I went in to get tests done and they came back negative for RA, OA, and gout. Everything looked good on the x-rays and there was no cartilage worn down on the joints. Since I got it tested, the pain has continued to transfer to surrounding knuckles but not to the same pain level as the original left index finger knuckle.
Avatar n tn i had a total middle knuckle replacement on my right hand the knuckle that forms a fist, i had more range of motion with my old arthritis knuckle that i was born with, i will not never ever have another knuckle replacement i will keep the joints i was born with , i would rather have them because they have more range of motion and the silicone knuckle only provided 45 degrees of motion, if you go beyond that it will break, I regret having this operation, because i was better off with the knuckle
488675 tn?1208989954 On the last board-break i think i accidentally tilted my right fist a little to the left before impact, I broke the board, but had a lot more pain then usual. i pressed my knuckle and it felt like a bruise. I thought it would go away so i went to sleep. The next day the pain was less but when i pressed on my knuckle i felt 2 bumps, normally i just feel 1 big knuckle. Also when i moved the finger of that knuckle i felt the tendon rub against something.
Avatar n tn Now 10 years later, I have it in both shoulders, and pain when I walk, in my left arch and right ankle. Once my ring finger knuckle hurt for a year. The doc said the X-Ray showed no knuckle between the finger bones. Is this a case of disappearing joints? I've tried glucosamine chondroitin and shark cartilage but I can't see any noticeable improvements. Is there any way to resolve (aside from pain killers and drugs that have unknown or risky side affects)?
Avatar m tn Overusing any joint has the same effect that you can imagine, like muscle strain, wear and tear of the cartilage around the knuckle joints (its the same tissue that makes a popping sound when you press knuckle joints..). Its difficult to pin point the exact cause of the pain with the information you have provided, but my advise is that you must see at least a physiotherapist and later an orthopedic specialist to diagnose the reason for this pain.
Avatar f tn I am having terrible pain in middle knuckle on both hands. First noticed the pain a number of years ago after driving metal fence posts in the ground with a large hammer. Pain now id severe. Finger will functin if knuckle is flat. To touch them, bump them or bend the intendified the now constant pain. Does anyone have a suggestion?
Avatar m tn Hello Dear, Please be specific and mention where do you exactly feel the pain?Is there any swelling? The pain could be due to many reasons such as nerve irritation, cervical spondylosis, rheumatoid arthritis and so on.Generally arthritis is associated with stiffness, swelling and pain in other joints.Unless the symptoms become specific the diagnosis cannot be confirmed. If the symptoms worsen you should consult a orthopedic doctor.
Avatar n tn Hi! If you have other joint issues then possibility of rheumatoid arthritis and gout should be ruled out first. Both can cause extensive joint pain with rash. If you have RA then you will have positive rheumatoid factor and high C-reactive protein and ESR. High uric acid levels in blood go more in favor of gout. Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined. Take care!
Avatar m tn I have broken the pinky knuckle and the ring finger knuckle on my right hand, and unfortunately it never healed correctly. Its nearly impossible to keep these joints from movement during the healing process so the splint or wrap is only helping very little. Just give it some time. I spare and box and nearly everytime I land a good punch with my right hand it swells, its something that I realize I will have to live with.
Avatar f tn Other than that, Tendon sheaths or knuckle joints can also leak fluid into pouches; these are known as mucous cysts, and they behave and are treated just as ganglion cysts. I suggest you to get it examined from a dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations, and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor.
Avatar m tn Is there any enlargement of the knuckle joints? Are the fingers misshaped? Does it hurt more with certain positions of the hands or all the time? You could have simple arthritis in them, or rheumatoid arthritis in them, or even carpal tunnel syndrome. A visit to your primary care physician can diagnose which problem, if any, you have, and could relate treatment to you at that time.
1024532 tn?1380058352 It started with hand pain and wrist pain the end of May. Then in June my joints of my index and middle finger on right hand began to swell and get very red and painful. Doctors took blood tests, xrays, and MRI's. Told me I have carpal tunnel and arthritis, in wrist, shoulder and hands. Went to a hand specialist in Aug. he gave me a steroid shot in the worst knuckle of right hand and it made me sick for 6 hours, and no improvement.
Avatar f tn Starting to notice it in my shoulder as well. It all started with a pain in my wrist which I thought was from doing too many bicep curls. It has been getting much worse. By my pointer finger knuckle on both hands it is swollen. In most parts of my body I have tender joints. My ribs evn grind and Crack sometimes. Weird feeling! Been to rheumatologist most ecently and had blood work done and everything came back normal.
Avatar m tn Also when I lay my hand flat on the table and hold down my finger from the third to second knuckle the remainder of the finger 3nd knuckle and above can bend backwards while the uninjured finger can not. Which seems to me like it could be broken or ripped tendon granting it increased mobility. I don't want to get an xray without just cause because my mom thinks I am overreacting and don't want to go an end up proving her right.
Avatar n tn Are you left handed, and/or use your fingers quite a bit? Overuse, especially involving harsh vibration like keyboarding, can lead to knuckle damage (osteoarthritic joints are very painful but they usually are easy to spot as they're also swollen). Does heat somewhat relieve your finger pain? You might try: regularly massaging your hand and fingers; and flexing your hand and fingers from time to time, towards improving it's flexibility and blood circulation.
Avatar m tn They didn't work for me. But is still worth trying. I also tried other remedies - rosehip, celadrin, Vitamin A supplements. Unfortunately, there comes a time, when nothing helps. Glad it has worked for you.
1336567 tn?1291786348 A few days ago, a hard immobile bump appeared on the back of my hand (barely seen but very obviously felt). Technically it may have been there a bit longer, but I usually notice things like this. Anyways, it is on the metacarpal of the pointer finger, and wraps around the side of the bone on the "thumb" side. It's about midway between the wrist and knuckle, making me thing it probably isn't a ganglion cyst.
Avatar f tn Are his joints supposed to click? She ever tell you why they are clicking?
Avatar f tn It went away on its own after about 2 months, but I still feel remnant pain in my knee and elbow occasionally. Now I don't know if this is related but I am having more joint issues. I woke up with two reddened circular spots as of this morning. One is on the right side of my thumb joint and the other is on the right side of my pointer finger knuckle. There is numbness on that thumb near my fingernail. It has been there since I woke up.
1968463 tn?1374757813 Rahe, I have the knuckle pain and stiffness. I was told about 12 years ago that I have carpal tunnel in my right arm, but I get the problem in both hands. My hands seem to look swollen at the joints when they hurt too. I watched my M-I-L suffer from Rh. Arthritis(sp?) and I am always worried that maybe thats what it is....but honestly dont know. Just know how painful and frustrating it can be sometimes. Sorry I couldnt help.
Avatar m tn You may have severely bruised the bone, or fractured it by the force that went on the hand as you landed. An xray of the hand would be able to show whether you have caused damage to the bone. In the meantime strap the middle finger to the two either side to immobilise it. You can apply a lot of natural yogurt to that part and lightly bandage it. This helps by drawing out the inflammation. Keep your weight off that hand too until it is fully healed.
Avatar m tn when i grip anything with my right hand, like scissors or any hand tool, and squeeze, i get a sharp pain in my middle knuckle, i noticed it about a year ago, it was not bad at all at first, but over the last week its become a constant. all other knuckles on both hands are fantastic otherwise,im dont recall any injury or reason why this is happening, any ideas? thank you.
