Common Questions and Answers about Knee problems from squats

knee

Avatar m tn Hi, I recently started going to the gym about a month back. Being a skinny 17 year old, I wanted to get atleast a little bigger before I headed off to college. My routine consists of squats, deadlifts, bench press, military press and power cleans alternating on M/W/Th. However about two weeks back I suppose I pushed myself too hard on the squats and loaded too much weight without having proper form. What happened was that after squatting down, trying to come back up was extremely difficult.
Avatar m tn re not orthopedic surgeons, unfortunately. From my own experience with a bad knee, this sounds more like either tendon or cartilage problem rather than muscular, if it is in fact in the knee. That's a joint, not a muscle. If you hurt muscle doing squats, it would most likely be in the glutes or the thighs or possibly the periformis, and it would probably just be sore, not injured unless what you don't say is you were doing this exercise with heavy weights.
Avatar f tn and it seeems like everyone has had flexion problems after tkr not extension from meniscus and tendon problems. I got a 2nd opinion and the dr. wanted to do a posterior capsular release which is even more invasive. After all this I'm just not sure my lack of extension is even caused by arthrofibrosis! Anybody, have any opinions as I'm not sure I should go through with the M.U.A. I'm just trying to find an answer because I'm in alot of pain and I just want my full ROM.
2063301 tn?1343833074 I started going to the gym around 2 months back and my trainer got me started on a high intensity of squats, steppers and abdomen related exercise such as squats and sit ups. And after about 2 months I developed a back and knee ache. My left knee hurts whenever I climb stairs or stand up from a sitting position but that pain is much more better than before.
Avatar f tn First, there's a limit to how much you can change the basic shape nature gave you. Some of us just have bigger body parts than others. So the question is whether the size issue is due to fat, in which case you'd probably have excess fat in other places as well, especially the belly and thighs, or just due to your anatomy.
Avatar f tn I am sorry about your knee problems. I too have knee problems which were made worse by physical therapy. The one thing I have found that helps me is a good chiropractor treating my knee. Since you are on maternity leave I suggest that you also may want to find a good chiropractor to also treat your back.
Avatar n tn Have a day of rest in between each one so that your glute muscles get to fully heal. Include squats, split squats and step-ups into your weight-training workout, as each are effective at targeting your major butt muscle. Perform three to five sets of eight to 20 reps of each glute exercise you include in your workout. This type of exercise will help size gains because it is effective at overloading your muscle fibers. Rest 30 to 90 seconds in between each set.
2217782 tn?1394363972 Today I tried out a workout video I got for christmas and my main struggles was my knees. Everytime I done a squat there were lots of crackling noises coming from my knee caps. As far as I can guess it must be bone or cartilage? I would love to get fit but I'm stuck I'm a catch 22 situation here. Could anyone suggest what this could be? Is there any supplements I could be taking? I really need answers this surely can't be normal for a 19 year old?
Avatar n tn A preexisting condition called as chondromalacia predisposes individuals to wear and tear of the cartilage under the knee cap. The pattern of cartilage damage seen with chondromalacia is distinct from the degeneration seen in arthritis, and the damage from chondromalacia is thought to be capable of repair, unlike that seen with arthritis. Treatment is by resting the knee and adhering to a proper physical therapy program.
Avatar m tn My biggest obstacle is my left knee, which was quite heavily injured 5 years ago while I was playing basketball. It was treated by a surgery followed by physical therapy. However, my left leg has been noticably weaker than my right leg ever since. One of the reasons I started weightlifting was so I could try to fix these imbalances.

Bromelain is believed to be an effective herbal remedy for soft tissue inflammation and pain relief. In her book "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," naturopathic doctor and herbalist Sharol Tilgner notes that arnica, calendula and rue are particularly helpful for musculoskeletal injuries.
Avatar n tn t have much pain or discomfort but by the 3rd day I began to have pain in the Pes anserine Bursa below the knee. Then over the next week the knee started to get tighter and I started to to hear more popping and swelling around the knee. I also noticed that my IT band on the side of my knee will snap when I pivot or change directions. Over the past few days I had started to bike more and do some lunges and squats, stretches, etc.
Avatar f tn So a few days back I hit the side of my knee into a planter box with decent force. The side of my knee hurts from impact but the under the kneecap area has also proven to be very mildly sore just from daily activities after. I'm suspecting that my ACL has been bruised and not entirely torn because it did not hurt as if it was torn upon impact. My burning question is can I still do weighted back squats and generally excersize it if this turns out to be the case?
Avatar m tn Few weeks ago I did deep squats with weights and my knee started popping and cracking. After that every step I walk into the staircase I hear loud cracking sound in me knee. So I thing it is 90% torn meniscus. Is there other solution than surgery? May physical therapy?
Avatar f tn I don’t do any heavy exercises like squats but pain occurs from walking, resting, stairs, driving. I am seeing a second opinion tomorrow who does specialize in lateral release.
Avatar n tn Do you have access to a gym? Or is this for at home exercises without any equipment?
Avatar m tn I have had knee pain since I was a kid. I am 20, and I have been a swimmer up until last year. I believe it may come down to more than one cause, but I will leave that up to the professionals to decide. Bascially, I have alot of pain around my pattella when squatting past 30 degrees. I believe it is in part due to patellar mistracking. I have been working on flexibility in my hamstrings and quads, as well as strengthening my VMO, since it is weaker than the outer quad muscles.
1292438 tn?1276120904 Free weight squats, split squats, and lunges—performed with perfect form—are all better choices for working your quads and protecting your knees. The Seated Rotation Machine The myth: Twisting on this machine helps melt your love handles. The truth: It works the muscles under your love handles, but will do little to reduce the fat that covers them. What’s more, because your pelvis doesn't move as you rotate your upper body, this exercise can put excessive twisting forces on the spine.
Avatar f tn Lets see man well pain came from the pop and the pop came from Id say your knee cap considering you were squatted down. But then up and pain subsided. Possibly knee cap moved back in place. Now then in morning knee lil swollen, pain when walking, no bending or squatting which would lead my proffessional opinion to be you over streched tendons, possibly a slight tear. Use an ice pack for 2 days twice a day 30 mins each. No more weights till Friday.

Avatar m tn Mini squats (or squats to 90, depending on you strength - I would probably start you on the mini squats) Mini forward lunges (or regular depth lunges, depending on your strength) These are just a couple ideas for you. You can look up more exercises online. The point it is to activate that muscle to make it stronger. I suggest you pick 3-5 exercises and start at a set/rep count of 3 sets and 10 reps of each exercise. As you feel able, add more exercises.
Avatar n tn when I do straight leg raises and contract my knee I sometimes encounter that sharp knife pain in knee. Also my knee locks up after doing quad sets and leg raises, Ive been told cause of the weak quadricep that is why? Anyone else out there with this?
