Common Questions and Answers about Knee pain locking

Avatar f tn First you have to find out whether the muscle wasting was the cause or the effect of knee locking or knee pain. Generally weakness of the inner thigh muscles and tightness of the outer thigh muscles causes the knee cap to move from its place and cause knee pain and knee locking. This could have happened in your case if you have a localized muscle wasting only.
Avatar m tn cfm Other causes of knee locking are torn medial meniscus, knee cap mal-alignment, osteoarthritis, knee arthritis, torn lateral meniscus, Osteochondritis dissecans - occasional knee locking with instability, Recurrent patella dislocation - may cause knee locking or knee collapse, Chondromalacia patella - occasional locking or knee collapse, Knee alignment problem, Knee fragment or Knee cartilage disorder. Hope this helps. Do not ignore it. Consult an orthopedic specialist.
Avatar f tn This resolved itself within a few days but I continue to have pain, locking, popping and weakness. The weakness first started in 1998 when someone kicked my leg in from behind me and my knee has given way in 2005, resulting in a bone bruise on my shin from hitting a step on the bus. The bone bruise has healed although I have a dent in my shin from where I hit it. Popping sound when straightening my leg from a bent position.
Avatar m tn I appreciate your concerns about your grandmother and I agree that the pain needs to be investigated. Usually knee locking and pain after total knee replacement is due to formation of fibrous tissue around the patella. Rarely, it is due to blocked or pinched popliteal artery that runs along the back of knee.
Avatar f tn I cannot slide on my knee without it popping and locking in a way I can beat describe as my knee getting stuck closed to the point where I have to squeeze it as tightly closed as possible. The pain is 10/10 and I can only unlocking it by hanging my knee over my other leg while lying on my stomach relieving pressure on the outside of the knee. This all started beginning when I injured my knee sliding on wet grass my cleat got stuck and twisted my ankle.
Avatar m tn I felt pretty unstable after that. I kept my knee straight as I walked to sit down. When I sat, I bent my knee and my knee just... locked? I felt like some bone came out of socket and stick out of my skin. I flinched and extended my leg and it snapped back. It has happened every time since then when i bend my knee. The pain is EXCRUCIATING. My doctor is out of town until next Saturday and I only feel comfortable with him.

159619 tn?1707018272 I could walk fine before the surgery. Now I have a limp and am in constant pain, not only the knee, but my other knee, back and hip from compensation. DO NOT GET THIS SURGERY!!
Avatar f tn Just as a side note, I had knee surgery a year and a half ago. My knee cap dislocated, and when I collapsed onto my knee, somehow a piece of my femur chipped off. The accident happened for no apparent reason, I was just getting for work in the morning. The doctors were totally baffled as to how a piece of my femur would have chipped off. Lastly, I have been trying to get pregnant for a year with my husband, unsuccessfully.
Avatar f tn This time around, i have been having a very sharp pain under my knee, inside the knee cap and on the side of my knee (laterally) Its like its locking, catching and occurs mostly when i walk, i cannot straighten the knee fully. It also happens either after walking awhile like 5-10 miniutes or right away. Sometimes i dont have a pain occurrence at all until the end of the day after overuse. Did I tear something this time hurting my knee?
Avatar m tn I am a 53 year old male who has been walking my whole life, lately my right knee has been locking up and I get a bad burning pain just about were my knee bends. This just came on all of a sudden about two weeks ago. It dosen't happen all the time, but when it does the pain is a hot burning type pain. It burns for awhile and I have trouble walking and then it just goes away for days at a time until it happens again. Does anyone know what it could be or what is causing this pain.
1524304 tn?1326396974 So, I've had a question. Recently I was kneeling, both knees on the floor, and upon getting up my right knee suddenly had a loud pop/crack and sharp pain. For a while I couldn't move my knee and I waited out for pain to lessen. It did after about 30 minutes. But following days I found that if I move it wrong or bend too much, or put weight on it while bent, it kinda locks. After a moment or two, though, it passes and I can straighten it again.
Avatar m tn I had a locking torn meniscus in my right knee and my Doctor ordered surgery. I canceled the surgery and started therapy and the pain left. Then I had the same thing in my left knee. I went to another doctor and told me the same thing that I need surgery. I did therapy instead and it left this goes back many years and still ok. in fact, I do intensive running on a treadmill. I heard from many people that had surgery and are still suffering.
Avatar m tn excercise is STILL extremely difficult due to pain levels and my knee sometimes locking up. i am also unable to sleep with a blanket over my knee at night, otherwise it disturbs my sleep. i have had about 3 mri scans, 1 ct scan, numerous xrays, and 1 ultrasound. i've seen upwards of 10 orth. specialsts, all of them had told me that nothing had shown up on the scans and that they didnt know what the problem was even though it had obvious swelling and discolouration.
Avatar m tn Symptoms include pain along the inner or outer side of the knee, stiffness, swelling, and sometimes “locking” of the knee. A piece of torn cartilage may get caught between moving parts of the knee joint and causes the sound. A clicking sound may be heard when moving the knee. The pain may be worse when squatting. I hope this helps.
1672514 tn?1304512914 Now my hip to my toes are sore, I have tingles and numbness from hip to toes. Pain in my thigh, knee, ankle. Last night I had my leg elevated and my right foot was ice cold. What should I do? What is the proper way to elevate your knee and lower leg, that wont cause your foot to get cold?
Avatar n tn I have been given a prescription for Synvisc injections into the intra-articular area of the right ankle, most of the information I have read has been about injections into the knee, do you have any information on the success of this treatment for arthritis pain?

Avatar f tn My knee is stiff and painful today underneath the knee cap where the pes anserine tendon inserts and to the inside of the knee cap (medially). I also have pain in the middle of the back of the knee, is especially sharp if I push into it. In terms of comfort and daily activities, I am having no trouble walking except that my knee will get a little swollen (very slight) and stiff if I walk a lot.
Avatar n tn my thumb keeps locking, literally only for a second but i kinda have to force it to move its like a clicking effect (but no sound) and is quite painful. what could it be?
Avatar n tn If you have locking/catching/clicking and pain on the inside/medial of your knee then likely meniscus tear. If the pain is bad enough, I'd see your PCP who can get an MRI to rule out other things such as meniscus, ACL, OCD lesions, PVNS, etc. Try nsaids, home pt, quad stretching/strengthening.
Avatar n tn Since I do not feel any locking or major disconfort with my knee, and even the mcmurray and other tests failed to make me feel the pain, I was wondering if in my case, the surgery is the only option ?
Avatar f tn The pain has gotten extensively worse now affecting the knee. I went back to doctor and the doctor said it is arthritis of the knee and that, at this point, no tests were necessary. Well, in spite of anti-inflammatory meds, I cannot put my full weight down on my leg without pain that seems more concentrated directly under the knee. I am walking around limping. I am afraid that if something else is going on, I may be injuring it more by walking on it. Can you answer the following for me?
Avatar m tn This happens due to mal-alignment of the knee cap on bending the knee (and hence any imaging study has to be taken with the knee bent), injury to the knee (you may have sustained it in past), flat feet, over tight or over lax muscles around the knee joint. All these aspects will have to be investigated by your doctor. Other possibilities are bursitis (inflammation of fluid filled sac over joints), tendonitis (inflammation of cords joining muscles to bones) or due to weakness of patellar bone.
