Common Questions and Answers about Knee pain after running marathon

knee-pain

Avatar f tn My knee is stiff and painful today underneath the knee cap where the pes anserine tendon inserts and to the inside of the knee cap (medially). I also have pain in the middle of the back of the knee, is especially sharp if I push into it. In terms of comfort and daily activities, I am having no trouble walking except that my knee will get a little swollen (very slight) and stiff if I walk a lot.
Avatar m tn Hi, I recently took up jogging and am currently training for a half marathon. I started noticing that after running for 3 to 5 miles, I get bruises on my knee (the left knee has darker / larger bruise than the right knee). The bruises only hurt like a bruise when I press down on them. But they are not particularly painful when I walk or run the next day. I run about twice to 3 times a week.
Avatar n tn My mom is in training for a marathon, and had to quit after complaining of severe pain in her hips. She went to the doctor and after bone scans, x-rays, and the like; the doctor said it was burrcitous (I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong). At first she thought it was arthritis, but it just kept getting worse. She's not allowed to run anymore.
Avatar m tn ve put more miles on my knees from running and hiking with wieght both up and down hill then anyone I know. This year after a marathon I had the normal pain around 20 miles and the regular soreness aftewards. Two weeks after the marathon I did a half marathon and barely finished with a throbbing knee. From my readings it sounds like I may have both a meniscus problem and good old fashion wear and tear. I have numerous sharp pains that come and go, however not enough to effect my walking.
Avatar f tn Back when I was a kid, I hurt my right knee pretty hard. Went to the doctors, as the "swelling" wasn't receding, and was diagnosed with exostosis. Had surgery to remove the ostheocondroma at the age of 13, which resided on the inner part of right knee. Around 20, it started bothering me again.
Avatar n tn I am a marathoner, last time i ran 17 miles on a regular schedule for San francisco marathon before 2 weeks and realised pain on knee and back. I stop running whenever i have such issues. I went to Detroit and came back in a bus, next morning my back pain was sever then i took rest for a day. I took some pain killer and got back to work and run again but max i could run in last 2 weeks is 5 miles. I am having shoulder and lower neck pain still.
Avatar n tn m not a marathon runner but I do enjoy running n ran on a daily bases b4 the pregnancy. I also kept on running after pregnancy I ran 3 miles 4 times a week till 25 weeks with this pregnancy. . I went to bike riding because my husband kept insisting that he felt more comfortable that I use a bike instead of running. He thought something might happen. So I did for him but my last pregnancy I ran til eight months. I'm still weight training.. N I feel awesome.
Avatar m tn Shortly after the Chicago Marathon (didn't run in it, but chased friends throughout Chicago that did run), I started to have severe pain and some swelling in my left knee (previously twisted it in HS, approx. 8-9 years ago, never went to MD). I initially just assumed it was from running around so much since it usually did that after I would be on my feet for more than 8 hours (used to work retail). However, after 3-4 weeks the pain never went away and only got worse.
Avatar f tn I was training for a half marathon when I found out I was pregnant about a month ago. I gave up all training because the first few weeks I had major fatigue and cramps. Now I am feeling better and the race is Saturday. I was debating on jog/walking it. I've been reading mixed opinions on running that distance during the first trimester. Any suggestions?
Avatar f tn The pain gets worse when walking, but running/biking actually alleviates the pain. Since the pain started, I have run two 5ks and a half marathon, with minor pain, but not enough to cause me to not be able to race. The pain is concentrated behind my knee and in my upper thigh. I am terrified its a DVT, due to the fact that walking makes my leg feel so heavy. No swelling/redness as far as I can tell - but my anxiety about this is making it hard to see for sure.
Avatar m tn ve found that knee issues tend to be quite difficult to accurately dx. For example, I was told my knee pain from a marathon was nothing after x-rays, PT, and an MRI. I was finally diagnosed almost a year later with pes anserinus bursitis. Is there anything else that it might be aside from Plica Syndrome? My podiatrist passed it off as a bursitis, which I don't think is an accurate dx.
Avatar n tn It hurts when bending knee to chest, or after running, walking, cycling, basically overuse. I use a heating pad which helps at night. Is this a hip flexor injury and how do I treat it?
20812737 tn?1519267696 I will only have regular socks and running shoes for my feet. I had pretty bad swelling of the foot and ankle for about ten days after the flights over here. Would it be a good idea to put those compression sleeves on before beginning the 25 hour travel marathon to return home to the usa?
Avatar f tn Hello, I am a long distance runner and have been running for awhile now. I am currently training for another half-marathon at the moment and have been gradually increasing my mileage. I run an average of 15-20 miles a week when I am not in training. So I ran a 12 mile training run on Sunday with absolutely no issues or pain of anything. And it felt great. I obviously took Monday off and rested. However I did walk my dog for about a mile that night.
1470596 tn?1286713970 I had this problem and realised thanks to my physio, that I overpronated when running. This can cause knee problems which is why I needed to buy shoes with arch support which stops the foot rolling inwards. For walking you can buy orthotic insoles but I would not recommend running with these. I use Adistar Salvations to run. A good running shop will check you for pronation before you buy. Also this might seem obvious but are you stretching before and after running.
1773330 tn?1314171331 i ve been running on threadmill for 2 weeks..i ve got a knee pain...any solution to decrease the pain?
Avatar n tn All of these symptoms kicked in after I finished three months of training for a half marathon. After the 1/2 marathon the weight just kept coming off which I thought was a blessing. I thought that the exercising caused my thyroid to become overactive along with the stress from graduate school, work and moving. Do you think running 15 to 20 miles a week and lifting weights for 45 minutes 3 times a week would lead to thyroid problems? Has anyone tried taking Iodine supplements?
Avatar f tn I am looking forward to continue with my running habit, but should I slow down or pause after some time while running? I mean I don't run that long. Or, are they some steps I should follow, does this happen only when you are beginner and does your body get over these injuries with time?
Avatar m tn Recently i started running around our neighborhood, this is my first time running outdoors. I noticed that after a few days i started getting this sharp pain in front of my lower leg and my calf. It would happen to 1 or both legs at same time. when i stop running i would have to continue to walk to ease the pain. I never experience anything like this when i used to run in the treadmill.
Avatar m tn I forgot to mention when I stand or walk for a long period of time as well, the rest of my leg begins to ache, as well as my knee. The knee pain wasn't there in the past but it began to hurt recently.
Avatar m tn ve been running with no knee pain. I run on the dirt/grass, where others run on the hard cement. Time after again they would get knee injuries. I quit running in races because I could feel the difference in the hard surface on my legs running verus the dirt/grass. If it was me, since I love running, I would stay off the hard cement. Our joints aren't made for that hard pounding.
Avatar f tn Also I have done much nationally publicized research on the danger of a lifetime of marathon running (featured in Runner's World, WSJ, NYT, etc.) Read these three links. http://www.msma.org/uploads/6/2/5/3/62530417/marathon_running_an_unhealthy_addiction_editorial_mar_apr_2018_momed.pdf AND http://www.msma.org/uploads/6/2/5/3/62530417/goldilocks_zone_for_exercise_not_too_little_and_not_too_much_mar_apr_2018_momed.pdf AND http://www.msma.
Avatar m tn Unfortunately with retina, one cannot predict or feel if the retina is under pressure, unlike the muscle where we can feel the ache after running few hours which give you signal to slow down or to stop running, but with retina, we don't know if it is about to worn or torn or detached, or is there ? How to define strenuous exercise ? I read somewhere that an exercise is considered strenuous if the heart beat is above 70 % of ( 220 - age ). Thank you for your kind attention.
3190984 tn?1344941837 I asked my surgeon about it, and he said that at about 12 months after surgery (if all went well) that I could start running again. He said there is no predicting when another disc rupture might happen, that I should try to be careful, but I should continue doing the things I enjoy. I'd LOVE to run more, but it is so much more difficult to get back into it. I am obviously not in "running condition" anymore, but it is beyond that.
