In an IVP, dye is injected into a vein. The dye travels through the blood to the kidneys. As the dye is filtered into the urinary tract, it makes urine visible on the x ray and shows any blockage in the urinary tract.
Avatar n tn calcium oxalate stones, struvite stones, uric acid stones or cystine stones. Potassium citrate is used for the treatment of stones. Treatment modes include oral medicines, Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithrotripsy (ESWL), uteroscopic stone removal and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Please discuss these treatment options with your urologist. Also take less calcium and oxalate rich foods and supplements like dairy products, colas, chocolate, peanuts, leafy vegetables, and tea. I hope it helps.

Avatar n tn Hi, Calcium oxalate crystals are an indication that there may be kidney stones in one or both kidneys. Kidney stones up to 5 mm in size can pass through the urinary tract, though with significant discomfort. Bladder stones can also be formed with the calcium oxalate crystals; however, kidney stones are more likely. If the stone is blocking some part of the outlet of the kidney or the ureter, it will cause obstruction and backflow of urine.
Avatar m tn Hello, Since the kindey stone is 7 mm, so the symptoms seem unrelated to the kidney stones. Since you are having pedal or leg edema, hence your cardiac, liver and kidney functions need to be assessed for which I suggest you to consult a physician immediately. Abdominal causes like irritable bowel syndrome can also cause such symptoms. Common symptoms include abdominal cramping or pain, bloating and gassiness, and altered bowel habits(alternate constipation and loose stools).
Avatar m tn i was recently told by my doctor that trace amounts of protein were found in my urine. i have had a long history of kidney stones, over 10 yrs and have been seen a urologist for kidney stones. could the trace amounts of protein in my urine be connected to the nephrolithisis? my md (not my urologist) prescribed an ace inhibitor benazipril 10 mg to protect my kidneys from damage, and said the the trace amounts of protein in my urine may be due to the kidney stones.
Avatar f tn Hyperparathyroidism is the number one cause of kidney stones. Every person with a kidney stone should be tested for a problem with their parathyroid glands. Nearly half of all people with kidney stones have a parathyroid tumor in their neck that must be removed or the kidney stones will return.

Avatar n tn Hi, Renal calculi can vary in size from as small as grains of sand to as large as a golf ball. Kidney stones typically leave the body by passage in the urine stream, and many stones are formed and passed without causing symptoms. If stones grow to sufficient size before passage—on the order of at least 2-3 millimeters—they can cause obstruction of the ureter.
Avatar n tn Hi, Kidney stones form when the components of urine are out of balance. When this happens, the urine contains more crystal-forming substances, such as calcium and uric acid. Kidney stones are also prone to develop in highly acidic or highly alkaline urine. Sometimes, the underlying cause is an inherited metabolic disorder or kidney disease. Gout, inflammatory bowel disease and some medications promote specific types of kidney stones.

Avatar n tn can kidney stones move in the body? Found an kidney stone on the right side now months later left side is tender and swollen an hot! right kidney stone never REMOVED!! now left side feels like it had the stone from the right side??????????? Is that possible???????
Avatar f tn The treatment for kidney stones depends on their size and what they are made of and also if they are causing pain or obstructing the urinary tract. Small stones usually pass through the urinary tract without treatment. It is good advice to stay well hydrated as that should prevent the stones from getting any bigger or new ones from forming. For kidney pain you may take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen or naproxen .
Avatar f tn It's been three weeks since my diagnosis of having multiple kidney stones on the right side. The Radiologist who gave me my stat results said I would pass them and didnt think straining my urine was something I needed to do. I finally got in to see my urologist he was upset I wasn't straining and wanted me to have surgery since I will be undergoing IVF treatments in March. I agreed because I don't want to deal with flare up while pregnant.
Avatar m tn i have been to see my gp a month ago with kidney stones, painfull cramps ,the pain has gone but im passing alot of blood when i urinate and it also stings when i urinate which is about 20 times a day im male and 29 years old any help please
Avatar f tn UTI can also be due to the polycystic kidney disease as well. Kidney stones and kidney failure are late-stage symptoms of the disease. I suggest you an immediate urologist’s evaluation. If the size of the stone is small, it’s usually treated with ESWL in which shock waves are given from outside and stone breaks into small pieces. On the other hand, if the stone is quite big, then the surgical removal of the stone is a better option. Also her renal functions need to be studied.
Avatar n tn However, caution should be made when taking supplements, since both drugs can alter kidney function and cause urinary symptoms (e.g. stones, dysuria) when not taken properly. I suggest that you ask your doctor first if these are safe for you to use. Thanks for asking.
Avatar n tn I may not know much about kidney stones, but I've had multiple bladder infections and risked kidney stones before when I was 18. One thing I can say, I'm not going to be 100% positive on it, but if your son drank cranberry juice (lots of it) check into the effects of the oxalates(in cranberries) and the calcium(in your urine) building up to possibly form kidney stones, the last question on the linked page will be helpful if that's the case. http://www.uti-cleanse.com/faqs.
Avatar f tn I have a 15 yr. history with kidney stones. I had my most recent attack 3 weeks ago and it was one of the longest enduring of any I've had, with the most severe flank and ureter pain lasting almost 12 hrs. The last couple hours of the horrible pain, I experienced what I would almost call spasms very low down, and I've never had that before in any of the other attacks. I had waves of pain and the urge to urinate every few minutes.
