I may not know much about kidney stones, but I've had multiple bladder infections and risked kidney stones before when I was 18.
One thing I can say, I'm not going to be 100% positive on it, but if your son drank cranberry juice (lots of it) check into the effects of the oxalates(in cranberries) and the calcium(in your urine) building up to possibly form kidney stones, the last question on the linked page will be helpful if that's the case.

I had kidney stones with my first and never peed blood..got kidney stones again this pregnancy was peeing blood they said bladder infection but I ended up in hospital 3 days later with kidney stone attack so I either had both or was trying to pass stones..I would call my doctor so they can get a urine sample while you are peeing the blood out..
A recent article in our local paper has a dietician recommending a diet for minimizing the formation of kidney stones that is the exact opposite of what the diet my urologist has me on. His diet is based on what seemed logical: low calcium and low oxalates to prevent the combination of the two to form a stone in the kidney.
Before you assume your kidney stone production is based on a magnesium deficiency, you need to have your labs and stone analized. An IVP of your kidney will help determine if you don't have a "sponge kidney".Medullary Sponge kidney is an anatomical defect in the kidney which produces multiple kidney stones within pockets of the kidneys. I have had kidney stones since 2001. Currently (as of May 1) I have had a 15 mm and a 10 mm (as well as several of their babies) in my kidney. I have been scheduled for a systoscopy but when I went for my pre-op, I had extremely (dangerous) high blood pressure. I have never had this high blood pressure in my life (even when I went to the emergency room for kidney stone attacks).
Everything was fine until about last week when I began to feel a slight pain in the same kidney as before. My urine (like last time) had some visible blood in it, but would go away once I began drinking a lot of water like in December.
I also notice every once in a while when I urinate, I see a very small, red tissue/speck in the toilet. So, since I had many small calculi, I figure I just have another stone coming but the tissue threw me off/is worrying me.
The last surgery I had was in 2006. I also have had/have kidney stones in my left kidney, I passed a 13mm one in June 2006. In the past year I have not had any reoccuring problems with my obstuction and stones, although I still have 6mm stone in my left kidney. This past week, I did however urinate large amount of blood, my urine was cola colored. With my history I decided to go to the emergency room cause I was very concerned.
My friend suffered with stones in kidney.. they are out now. but from two days he's complaining that he lost lot of blood while urinating... he doesnt have any pain... we have consulted the doctor too yesterday...no proper outcome..only little medication suggested...can somebody let me know the reasons for this to happen..
Hi and WELCOME to our Kidney Stone Community. I'm not a doctor, but do have too much experience with kidney stones. For me, I'd get pings and pangs in my kidney as well as microhematuria (blood you cannot see by eye) in my urine when I have stones. I've also had the flank pain you describe .. for me it's been in the lower back. I hope with lots of water your stones move out for you uneveventfully.

I have Sjogren's syndrone and develop kidney stones often and they usually pass on their on. I had one crushed three years ago. I now have one that is so large with smaller ones lodged inbetween it that have blocked of my right kidney (seen in a CT scan today). I do not want to go through the crushing again.....what are other procedures? Would like to be prepared before talking to urologist.
