Avatar f tn I have only been on Topamax for my migraines since November 2010 and by January I had four kidney stones. One in my left kidney and three in my right. Now I have been taken off Topamax and it was so far the best medication for my migraines I was on 100mg of Topamax and went from having a migraine everyday to once a month. I miss Topamax but the pain of my kidney stones was much worse.
214901 tn?1227567555 My doctor recently told me to stop taking it. I developed five kidney stones(3 in one, 2 in the other). Apparently Topamax can cause kidney stones! I wish my doctors had told me this a few years back! I would ask your doctor what side effects are normal, and what side effects might occur with this medication. Also ask about Metoporol for migranes. It worked for me. I hope you feel better. Good luck!
Avatar f tn One of my daughters has headaches and we have tried topamax and propranol and she has to many side effects fromthem. Has anyone else had this problem.
Avatar f tn Might want to consider checking into kidney stones...Topamax is known to cause a person to form them. I take Topamax for seizures and monitor possible side effects. Hope you get relief and find out soon. Please let us know what you are diagnosed.
324184 tn?1308076203 If your daughter starts topamax, be sure to find a urologist. One of the major side effects of topamax is kidney stones. After taking it for my migraines for two years, I had kidney's full of stones. I have had three operations to rid myself of them and the surgery/recovery is very painful. The neurologist found out that I was in the hospital for a week ( the first time) and no kidding..yelled into the phone.. OH MY GOSH...ITS THE TOPAMAX!
681148 tn?1437661591 My friend stayed on the topamax because without it she would be completely disabled and no other medication works for her... the kidney stones are something she would rather deal with than be completely physically disabled, but her situation is very severe and if I got kidney stones I would personally cease the medication. Although, most people don't get kidney stones. Anyway, just drink lots of water and you should be fine....
1781720 tn?1314842836 Usual side effects of topamax may include fatigue, impaired concentration, dizziness, and paresthesias (tingling, numbness, pins and needles sensation). Kidney stones, as mentioned by Eddie and sometimes weight loss are often observed with continued treatment. Dosage reduction is often done by your doctor to help with these side effects. Take care and regards.
202665 tn?1248806733 I have friends using the med for migraine control and have had kidney stones which they beieve is a result of the medication. My understanding is that there is only a 3% - 5% greater change of stones with the drugs. Since the tratment of BP is a secondary benefit to this drug, I wonder how effective it really is. Any thoughts appreciated.
1343409 tn?1296026007 I started taking Topamax my junior year of high school, then I found out I had 4 kidney stones. The doctors think that it might have been because of the topamax, but I wasn't drinking enough water with it, so I think that could have been the problem. I want to try again and make sure I drink plenty of water..trust me, this time I will..lesson learned. First I have to collect my urine for 24 hours and send it away to be tested to see if my kidneys are functioning well.
Avatar n tn diets that are high in protein and low in carbohydrates can increase the risk of kidney stones.
Avatar n tn I've been on Topamax for over a year now and it did that to me at first too, the numbness or tingling, mostly in my toes, I started out at 50mg. and now have been on 75mg, for 6 mos. I will say for me, those side effects have gone away and personally the good out ways the bad, you see, I had a mild stroke from the migraine I had, I have hemiplegic migraines and to me it is worth a little discomfort rather than go through that again!
Avatar n tn ( I thought I had a UTI and the test was negative for UTI but high in calcium and so they sent me to the urologist who then through the tests found the kidney stones and my ovarian cysts.) I was on special diets and lifestyle modifications and kept having to go to the urologist and follow up with my doctor over and over again, but I kept making more stones. The chiropractor found out and gave me an adjustment once, and I never had another kidney stone to this day. That was a few years ago.
1415174 tn?1453243103 I was in the ER this summer with a new pain in my lower back and thought kidney stones...Nope not a one....I was told to drink plenty of water and my Dr tests my blood labs and looks for issues with my kidneys every 6 months ...plus I am on a low dose. Not sure if it was my surgery or the TOPAMAX but I sweat now and never did b4....not a lot...so, I did get use to making sure I did not sit in the sun long etc....so that is not an issue for me.
Avatar f tn I am not the type of person who likes to take medication and I have had a read on a couple of different forums about topamax and there seems to be a lot of negativity surrounding the drug with some pretty scary side effects. Can anyone enlighten me with some success stories?? Thanks, from New Zealand!
Avatar f tn I wish I could take Topamax but apparently if you have a history of kidney stones is a no go! I picked up a stomach virus this week and had a few days of vomiting and all the other stuff that goes with it. OMG! my head hurt so so bad for 3 days. I wasnt able to move. It finally broke yesterday I was so so thankful. I think I would almost trade another kidney stone to never have that pain again!
Avatar f tn Hi. I've been on Topomax 125 mg. for almost 6 months now. I have much less migraines than before but I still have chronic daily headaches. Does anyone else have daily headaches? I've asked my neurologist about increasing my dosage to see if it would help with the daily headaches but he's hesitant due to kidney stones and other side effects. I feel better on Topomax than I did before and can handle the side effects I've had.
Avatar f tn My neurologist warns me that Topamax has a tendency to create kidney stones and urges me to drink lots of water to avoid that result. I have developed only one kidney stone after years of taking Topamax.
Avatar n tn Since that time she has been treated for endometriosis, kidney stones and now this false tumor. While hospitialized, a lumbar puncture was done and medication given to her. However the lumbar puncture caused her vein to collapse so they took it out. Next, they did a procedure where they snaked a a type of flexible wire through her artery in up her arm to send medication directly through the artery, past the heart.
Avatar f tn Although, I know one woman who does have a bladder condition and her and her doctor still picked topamax and the eventual kidney stones she would have to suffer (she's already had 2 now) because it has helped improve the quality of her life so greatly. In my case, I have no medical conditions like this so I can take it and as long as I drink a glass of water every time, it is likely never to be an issue because unless you have a kidney or bladder disease it is such a rare rare side effect.
1823499 tn?1370090289 I was wondering could it be stones from ne of the meds u may have been on? I know with TOPAMAX Kidney stones r a possibility especially if u do not drink enuff water.... I have had pain on my left side , thought it was stones from meds, and a sacn showed no stones....so I still have no idea,,...except I feel it is pain from my TC.... Good luck and keep us posted.
Avatar n tn I never leave home without them. I cannot take magnesium because I have had kidney stones, the topamax, and they said my magnesium levels were too high. topamax really helps with migraines but is really hard on the body. I hated Abilify! and I probably would only be on lithium if i had not been put on wellbutrin so many years ago when they misdiagnosed me for being depressed. I STILL WANT ONLY ONE DOCTOR!
Avatar f tn I thought I had found a match with Topamax, but I just found out that my recent hospitilization for about a dozen kidney stones that were causing infections and my kidneys to not balance acid levels properly are most likely due to the Topamax.
Avatar n tn I had a stone that blocked my kidney and even after blasting would not come out without being scooped out. This was in my left kidney. Kidneys were both checked out thoroughly for damage and other stones - neither of which was found. Questions are...Since it has been two months and I haven't passed any stones are they likely to just stay put? If the larger one gets stuck after I have my surgery will they be able to go in and get it out without cutting me or screwing up the TVT?
3144747 tn?1343049136 Some of the adverse effects associated with topamax include paresthesias (numbness/tingling), somnolence, dizziness, and risk for kidney stones. Weight loss is also a side effect that is commonly seen. If a patient’s tremor is very severe and refractory to medical treatment, sometimes more invasive procedures such as botox injection or deep brain stimulation are considered. But this would only be considered if medical options are exhausted.
Avatar m tn Then I read that heightened ammonia in blood can lead to kidney stones, hair loss and confusion...all side effects of Topamax. So, my thinking is that adding water and maybe some milk thistle or other liver supporting supplements may help tip the balance back. I am not sure those things work, this is just my theory on my limited research and there may be much larger issues at play. However, water and milk thistle can't hurt...right?
Avatar f tn Has she had a CT Scan w/o contrast in regard to the stones? What has it shown? I have an uncommon kidney condition called MSK (Medullary Sponge Kidney) along with having had out 1/2 my thryoid bcz of nodules that were atpical but my parathyroids were fine and all tests were A-OK that both my Uro and Endo have run inc. a 24hr urine test. Has your daughter had a 24hr urine test? That is important too.
Avatar f tn Hi...I have not had Diamox, but am on Topamax and they r both sulfa drugs and would explain the same metallic taste..... I also wonder if like Topamax it may be 2 weeks b4 u see benefits...if u r like me it took 2 weeks for the Topamax adjustment period.
