Common Questions and Answers about Keppra vs tegretol

keppra

502693 tn?1249151446 HI Debz123 Just joined this forum and saw you post. My doc is also switching my tegretol to keppra and keeping the epilim, and am just wondering how you found it in terms of seizure control and side effects? I think I can live with the side effects, as the epilim has left me with short memory loss and am always tired, but I'm really nervous switching meds as have had good seizure control (one in every 6 years for the last twenty). Any info. would be great thanks!
Avatar f tn yes app, keppra works well for both, i have just started this medication as i have been on sodium valporte and tegretol for many years, im slowly coming of the tegretol and going onto keppra, and if everything gos well they will then start to reduce the soduim valporte, i hope this has helped you in some way, if you like i can keep you informed of how things are going.
Avatar m tn If you have a seizure then I would advise you to continue taking Tegretol for now. Headache is not a common side effect of Tegretol, it would be unusual to have it. However, if you feel the headache is clearly related to the Tegretol then I would advise seeing a neurologist specializing in Headache in order to figure out what kind of headache you have. You appear to have been given a diagnosis of chronic tension headache.
471949 tn?1236904026 My 15 yr old son had a closed head injury and developed epilepsy. We have been thru several meds; tegretol, depakote, carbitrol, and topamax, and finally keppra. He too has nocturnal seizures arising from his frontal lobe. These meds come with terrible side effects, good luck finding the right one for your son. I know that on topamax my son had issues with memory and concentration, he couldn't even spell "if" when he was 12 ! I knew that something was wrong!
Avatar m tn its been 8 months since my mothers TBI- she had a seizure yesterday-she has been off keppra for 1 1/2 months-the side effects of keppra are aweful-they ask her questions and wonder why she is out of it and doesn't know her last name-(after they gave her keppra in the hospital) what can she take that is less evasive to her health and recovery??
233622 tn?1279334905 I have been on Tegretol for about 14 years...firstly for seizure control, secondly for pain management for Paratrigeminal Neuralgia (which differs from trigeminal neuralgia). I was intrigued by this drug when I saw your post so I looked into it. The following is copied and pasted from a website explaining anti-seizure meds... "The seizure control abstained with Trilepital is as good and in some situations better than with Tegretol.
Avatar m tn The seizures stopped on there on in the emergency room. The emergency room put her on Keppra, that is when the real nightmare stared. She stopped sleeping, had wild mood swings, hallucinations, rage, screaming and attaching (no behavioral problems ever before this). She would hug me for an hour at a time, and leave blood scratch marks on my back. Anxiety was very high. We took her off the Keppra (a call to the children’s hospital confirmed to do this).
7486852 tn?1410352184 I am sorry but I can not give you any insight into keppra or depakote, both of them did not work for me. I believe that I maxed out on keppra. Dilantin worked for about 8 or 9 years before it started to not control mine anymore. I am afraid the only way to see if depakote or any other drug is is just give it a shot. There is no other way to know if it will work for you or not.
Avatar f tn I also have been on Depakote for many years. I'm 39 & went on it about 20 or 25 yrs. ago. Had my 1st seizure when I was 2 y.o. Since have been diagnosed w/Epilepsy & have had episodes of all kinds...over past 20 years have been mostly Grand Mal & maybe a couple partial-complex..but usually Grand Mal. Dilantin, Tegretol, Topamax, Neurontin, Lamictal & recently Keppra have not worked for me. I am now back full-force on Depakote & doing better.
Avatar m tn A good Neuro would be able to tell you more specifically about your mother's condition. As my DD is in Keppra, and has previously been on other seizure meds, the Keppra, by far has had the least amount of side-effects. You could ask if some of her mood changes, memory loss, etc. are from the stroke vs. the Keppra. Please do not wean her off the medication without a Dr's directive... that could cause withdrawal seizures. My thoughts are with you that your mother gets well soon.
Avatar f tn What have you heard from patients on keppra for their epilepsy? My daughter is very tired, and has just begun keppra 7 days ago. She takes it only at night because of her extreme tiredness when she began it in the morning initially, and will be eased on to a second does in the morning next week. She's on only 250 mg once nightly now. Next week we're adding 125 mg to the morning and increasing that to a 250 mg morning dose the following week. Here are my questions: 1.
Avatar f tn s, all the anti manics including lamictal, old antipyschotics and the new antipsychotics, which thanks to them I am now prediabetic. I am now on Lexapro, xanax and tegretol. The tegretol is recent but I am having trouble with restless legs with it. I might mention that I have also had 21 sessions of ECT. Is there anything left for me?? I am feeling pretty hopeless at this point.
452529 tn?1361847855 I saw a neurologist in 2004 and was put on carbatrol and taken off tegretol...well another seizure occurred. I stopped seeing that Dr. and went to a psych. with a background in neurology. He said my the tegretol was not carrying over until I took my night-time dose. So I was put on XR tegs. and prescribed klonipin for the jerks. Last month I was taken off 100mg of dilantin and I had a seizure on 3/30/08 and I asked to be put back on 400mg of dil, 800mg of teg, and 1500mg of depakote. The Dr.
Avatar f tn ve read a statement from a Psychiatrist that Tegretol is always more successful for them than Trileptal is. Go to Bipolarworld - the Dr. in charge of that wrote a abstract of his experience using Tegretol vs Trileptal for BP. But Tegretol usually has side effects. http://www.bipolarworld.org/bipolarworld/Medications/Mood%20Stabilizers/stabmeds_main.
Avatar n tn Check with your doctor to see if Tegretol, Neurontin, Lyrica, or Keppra would help. They're usually used for seizures, but also sometimes for thalamic pain syndrome. Good luck.
559697 tn?1243286385 My son is 19 years old and has Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, he's on Keppra XR, Clonazepam, and Banzel. There's a chance lamital will be added. Is this too many meds. I have heard 2 or 3 meds at one time, no more. What affect does the drugs have on LGS?
1328714 tn?1294578263 I think to be honest check your tegretol leaflet and see if any of the symptoms are listed on it.If memory loss is on it I would recommend trying Keppra (Levetiracetam), it is quite new and has virtually no major side effects. I have been on it since just before christmas, and I feel better and my memory is improved. The frontal lobe is actually the memory part of your brain, so unfortunately it is inevitable your memory is a tadge unreliable.
Avatar n tn At age 13 I had two more seizures and thats when doctors put me on Tegretol 200mg. An MRI was taken at age 5 and at age 13, the size of the cyst remained the same. The seizures only occur while I am asleep. As of now the Tegretol has worked but pretty soon I wont have insurance to cover the medicine. Previously like a few weeks ago I took Tegretol 2x day (morning and night). I talked to my neurologist about this and she recommended I have an EEG (which came out to be normal).
Avatar n tn neurontin, tegretol, keppra, lamictal, dylantin, and I am getting the best results with a combination of trileptal and pamelor combined. I also SWEAR by vitamin B12. I started at a low dose but I am now on 2000 MICRO grams 2x/day. Try the b12 in combination with any anti-seizure drug.
Avatar f tn Have been changed to Keppra from Tegretol 2 months ago, memory is extremely limited (due to meds also). Is my life being slowly being extinguished as I breathe? I am afraid. I enjoy the outdoors, animals, working with my hands, plants, gardening, walking, warm weather. I am retired so nothing to do in cold weather except sit (read/tv/radio). Don't like to shop---can never remember what I'm to buy when I get there, even with a note pad.
959034 tn?1253671476 I am taking 200 mg tegretol 2x daily. I dont have the usual side effects. I things like joint pain.
Avatar m tn t say which is best to use but Lamictal was the most effective for me as well as other people and generally used more than the others. Trileptal unlike Tegretol (which its clinically similar to) does not require a blood test. Neurontin and Topomax don't but they are generally used as adjuncts. I was not able to tolerate Keppra because of personality changes and its not used often for this exact reason.
Avatar f tn Keppra well controls most epileptics with complex partial seizures. I transitioned from Tegretol to Keppra this past Spring and have not had a seizure since then.
