keppra and weight gain

which i was told by my neuro that it was vertigo due to the pollen in the air. can all this med make me gain weight. not a little person , but have gain about 20 pounds in the last month or so. wating or exercise habbits have not changed. could it be the meds.

I've been on Keppra for over 3 yrs now, other than gain weight as soon as I was put on the drug, I've had numerous UTI's and kidney infec. as well as Kidney stones, I reduced my dosage by half (1000mg/day down to 500mg/day) over a period of 4 months last yr, still szr free, and blood levels come back with in therapeutic range (something my Neuro can't quite explain yet isn't making me go back up to the 1000mg/day). But I'm having more kidney issues.. am I alone on this?

problems, other than the normal irritability issues, what have you noticed in way of side effects of being on this drug for so long? I also noticed weight gain, even though I exercise daily..

My daughter is now experiencing several side effects to keppra. She is extremely drowsy, very short tempered, depressed, and is reporting to me that her memory is 'foggy'. She's on a very low dose of keppra, only 250 mg at night and 125 mg in the morning. She's been on it a total of 3 weeks now. I've been with her and she seems to be very melancholy and also short fused over the many situations. She weighs 100 pounds and is 20 years old.

Hello everyone, I am 20 and was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 18 and was put on Depakote then taken off due to weight gain and put on Topamax, which is what I'm currently taking. Just recently I had a new diagnosis of Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy and was put on Folic Acid and Keppra. So now I'm taking three medications.

has the keppra helped you lose weight and how long did it take you to get use to the med? thanks for all your help .

I read something on rxlist about moodswings and irritibility related to Keppra. It's believed that Keppra makes your brain "dump" Vitamin B6 at times which lowers dopamine or seratonin levels and makes you feel horrible. Does your daughter take vitamins? I'd try some Vitamin B6 if her multivitamin doesn't contain it. I started taking Trader Joe's High Potency vitamins and feel much, much better since starting. Good luck.

Hello, I've had a fairly positive experience with all anti-seizure medications I've tried reducing pain in regards to my Fibromyalgia. I think the reason comes with my belief that there is a malfunction in the central nervous system for some reason. At this time we don't know what the cause is- many new scientists believe it may be neuro-immune. Anyhow, I've responded very well to medications like Neurontin, Lyrica and Topamax.

HI Debz123 Just joined this forum and saw you post. My doc is also switching my tegretol to keppra and keeping the epilim, and am just wondering how you found it in terms of seizure control and side effects? I think I can live with the side effects, as the epilim has left me with short memory loss and am always tired, but I'm really nervous switching meds as have had good seizure control (one in every 6 years for the last twenty). Any info. would be great thanks!

Morning, read your posts, just wondering I see you also have partial complex szs, how do you know your having them do you get an aura? I have been experiencing terrible nausea and dizziness along with numbness in arms and hands have you the same thing? Going to neuro today and hoping he will decrease my keppra and increase lamictal. I'm currently on 100mg of lamictal and 375mg keppra twice daily. I hate it way too irritable. Any suggestions!

please respond. She is now on keppra and is VERY tired on it, and has had to stop her schooling because of fatigue. Does the fatigue go away after a while or is it always this potent?

How ever, I have been on and still am on keppra, 3000mg a day, I have trouble sleeping and my neurologist as well as surgeon ect...

Lyrica works better than Neurontin, but scaredmom330 is right about the weight gain. I had the same problem and had to quit taking both. I packed on the pounds and wasn't happy because I had just spent hundreds of dollars at Weight Watchers to lose 25lbs only to watch that money go down the toilet. There are a couple other alternatives that are just as effective. One is Topamax, but you have to be at a high dose- at least 150-200mg. That is what I am at and what I take. It helps a lot.

I take it during nighttime. And no weight gain like what Depakote does... What about you? Whats ur dosage and how was ur Lamictal controlling ur seizures?

Dilantin does swell the gum, it causes weight gain, as do all the others I have taken. I am studying and realise my brain is now sluggish, I need to sleep.

Now he can only be described as disrespectful, disobedient, argumentative, rude and sometimes enraged. Hence ‘Keppra rage.’ He finally being weaned off Keppra and onto Vimpat. We pray that this is the answer. What happened to our silly, fun-loving, laid-back boy? Any idea that this is “just teenage hormones” is completely misguided. This is my fourth son and also fourth TEEN aged son.

They are like a partial complex seizure. I saw a neurologist and was started on Keppra. I was up to 2,500mg a day and they were not stopping. I began to track them carefully and I believe I saw a pattern of only during the 2nd half of my monthly cycle, days 15 - 28 (and usually between 18 and 21) My neurologist decided to put me in the hospital to do a video EEG monitoring and I told him the dates it needed to be. We hit it right and it was determined that my seizures are NES.

After a very frightening last 2 weeks of my boyfriend on Keppra my doctor did say to ween him off which I've done. Today is the first day off it and he still seems to have the dillusional aggressive side effects that I am hopeful after reading your post.....I pray to god that the old person before this drug comes back. ve tried abilify (caused too much muscle twitching and about 10lbs of weight gain but worked extremely well) also only was on 1 miligram when it was working -half a pill. I've been told I may metabolize pills differently so small doses to my body are larger. I also took Lamictal or however you spell it and I got a rash so I quit that. Also took Welbutron or however you spell that and that made me more irritable. I'm thinking about taking an anti anxiety med.

Was on lamicatal er when shaking started on right side of body but had a allergic reaction to it..

Lyrica did not work too well plus I hated weight gain. I have also tried Keppra, and now on Lamictal which reduces spasms but does not go away. I feel your pain and hope they can find something more helpful .
