Keppra and lamictal

Common Questions and Answers about Keppra and lamictal

keppra

I know Lamictal has a strong anti-depressent effect including when I took it and dizziness is a common side effect at first (including with me) but it generally passes in time.
Hi Friendlysky137, Yeah my neurologist put me on the Lamictal with the Keppra to try stop everything but my eyes were still fluttering so he added the topomax after many years of just the Lamictal and Keppra. When I started the Lamictal, I felt fine but over time, I started feeling like you, my mind was starting to go. I have always been great at remembering numbers and things like that and found myself to be forgetting simple things.
My doc wants to wean me off Keppra and slowly increase my lamictal. Luckily I have not had a reaction this far with it but its only been two weeks. He wants to switch due to the irritability from Keppra. I was taking Wellbutrin for depression but am not any longer, did feel I need it haha. Anyway I would speak to your doc about anti-depressant I havent heard of any problem with AED's. Lots of luck to you and your daughter.
Right after we spoke with her Neurologist about the negative side-effects, she told my wife to discontinue the Keppra and she started her on Lamictal, which she seems to be doing its job much more effectively. The day that she stopped taking the Keppra, she told me that she had a bad headache in the front of her head (frontal lobe area) and then she took a short nap; when she woke up, she appeared to have a speech impediment.
I read something on rxlist about moodswings and irritibility related to Keppra. It's believed that Keppra makes your brain "dump" Vitamin B6 at times which lowers dopamine or seratonin levels and makes you feel horrible. Does your daughter take vitamins? I'd try some Vitamin B6 if her multivitamin doesn't contain it. I started taking Trader Joe's High Potency vitamins and feel much, much better since starting. Good luck.
I was on Keppra for about 6 months and am also on anti-depressants. Keppra is a depressant drug to some people - I was one of them. I don't know if what you mean by behaviours is moods, but my mood decreased significantly. I become a completely different person. I have now been taken off it and put on a drug call Lamictal. It has relieved me some depressing moods and I have so much more motivation and life back in my face.
i called my neuro and it was a side effect of the keppra . my neuro gave me klonipin and it has helped 99% . my neuro told me i could hurt myself or others so call his neuro asap and report his behavior. i still take the keppra but the klonopin has eased the anger and temper .
At the moment I am on 3grams of keppra per day. recently I started to take 25 mg of lamictal beside keppra. this would be soon increased to 50 mg per day. since i started taking lamictal, i expirienced a dry vagina which at the begining had a fishy odor. the odor is now changed to normal, but the vagina is still dry and itchy. What should i do in this regard?
He was put on Dilantin and Phenobarbital and still continues to take those meds, as well as Zeppra. He has taken Lamictal in the past; but, began having seizures and it was eventually d/c'd and replaced w/Keppra. He cannot take Depakote or Tegratol. Both of those cause him to have continuous seizures. He almost died trying to switch to them and was hospitalized for over 6 weeks. He is now in a nursing facility and in the past 5 months or so has become extremely agitated, at times.
The Lamitctal gives me bad mood swing I snap into a rage very quick. Someone can look at me wrong and I turn on them and scream and yell for no good reason and the next minute I'm the happy normal person I am.
Sorry to join the party so late. My son is on keppra and lamictal for BRE. Originally he was on just keppra and was a maniac in the beginning. After just a few days our neuro said to give him b6 vitamin in the morning. He was back to himself immediately. I hope you have your issues figured out, but if not, look up keppra and b6, and ask your neuro about it. Best of luck!!
Cymbalta, Abilify, Wellbutrin, Lithobid, Lamictal, Tamazapan and thyroid meds Levoxyl and Cytomel. Oh, I forgot, we added Adderall XR for my ADD. It is hard to manage refills with insurance coverage, etc. You probably know the drill. I'm fed up with it all. My crying has stopped but I still want to stay in a bed in a corner all day long and not talk to anyone. I ran out of my Abilify and just stopped it cold turkey four days ago. I'm wondering if that will cause problems.
i just started taking keppra and prior to keppra i was on depakote i was on depakote 4 bouut 15 yrs and new bout the side affects reguarding liver and having to do blood count i was ok w that but now here i am depakote free for 9 months taking keepra 750mg=3000 daliy yet i can skip it for time and days and there i go having seizures yet id skip like a month at times w depakote cuz i was doing drugs at that time and realized it takes like 5 weeks of no depakote be4 id be laying out w seizures but
Actually I remember changing from lithium to Lamictal is 1998. I was wildly manic and psychotic as well and did some destructive and self destructive stuff I'd rather not post here but it started off seeming like fun. I was on Seroquel then as well as an antipsychotic and had to raise it just to keep myself out of trouble. The problem may very well be the slow titration dose of raising Lamictal but that's FDA required for reasons discused. As regarding Lithium generally 1200 mg.
I was not conscious during any of the events and no memory of the event other than the disorientation afterwards. 3rd seizure lasted longest and I am having serious memory issues....short term and long term. Also having cognitive issues. Was on Keppra, but had all the ugly side affects, now on Lamictal. Is this memory loss permanent? If not permanent, when will go away, what can I do to improve memory. I am scared I will never be able to work again. Thank you.
The docs took me off Keppra and put me on Lamictal. I was also put on Lexapro (10mg) for suicidal thoughts. A year later I got Stevens Johnsons Syndrome as a result of the Lamictal. I was then put on Lyrica which made me bloat and gain weight. Then I was on Topamax. I stopped all seizure meds in June of 2009 and am seizure free. However, I just stopped taking Lexapro last week due to 10lb weight gain. I am very active - just ran a 1/2 marathon and am planning another in June.
I take Keppra and Lamictal, and thought I don't have any problems getting and keeping an erection, I find it almost impossible to ejaculate when I'm with my partner. Even when I masturbate, it takes a lot of time and concentration to achieve orgasm. Frankly, I don't even care anymore, I just hate that it makes the person I'm with think that they are incapable of satisfying me. It has nothing to do with them, and I'm sure your boyfriend's problems have nothing to do with you.
I am concerned about the effects on the fetus while taking anti-seizure medications...I am currently on 3000mg daily of Keppra, and 150mg daily of Lamictal...I am told that these medications fall in the "Class C" drug classification...I was curious if you could offer advise, offhand, regarding the risk of these medications w/ pregnancy.
I was on Keppra and did not notice increased hair loss, not sure about lamictal. Are you sure your diet is adequate? I take vitamins.
I feel like a lost a whole part of myself and its pretty depressing. I dont have very bad szs I have partial siezures and am currently on lamictal and keppra. Let me tell you irritable is not the word, I'm horrible on keppra like a different person. I think my doc is going to wean me off and just keep me on lamictal. Although my blood work came back with elevated liver enzymes and low white count so who knows.
Lamictal,Keppra, and Dilantin. Actually I've been on Dilantin for 16 years and was seizure free and then I had a breakthrough seizure[devastating].My doc is transitioning me off of Dilantin and onto Lamictal. She said the Keppra would be a bridge while the Lamictal becomes fully therapeutic. What can I expect in terms of side effects? Is it realistic to think that Lamictal will eventually be my only AED? I currently take 600mgs of Dilantin daily.
I want to start with the drug that I have the best chance of maintaining my intellect, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and personalty.
I suffer from myclonic epilepsy and am currently taking Lamictal. I still have jerking in the mornings especially if tired but lamictal is apparantly a safer drug option if considering pregnancy. Last year I had a brain scan where they discovered a few white spots on the brain, just wondering what causes these. Could it be the migraines that I suffered as a child and well into my late 20's? Does myclonic epilepsy get worse as one gets older? I do have brain scan xray pics.
Depending on the type of seizure disorder you have, there are various ways to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures. Anti-seizure medication (Keppra, Lamictal, Trileptal, etc.) are commonly used. Avoiding seizure triggers, which for some people include bright or flashing light, is helpful. Talk to your doctor about these and other options, and check with the Epilepsy Foundation (epilepsyfoundation.org) for more information.
Special care is need with some medications (such as lamictal) because it interacts with the depakote (Depakote increases the level of lamictal in the blood and when the depakote is taken away the lamictal level will drop if the dose is not increased). Depakote works well for many people, but you are having many of the unacceptable side effects and you need an alternative. I hope this has been helpful.
The neurologist figured the Topamax just was not working and then put him on Keppra. (He was still taking 1 dilantin and weaned off that dilantin just before going on Keppra) I had him wean off the Topamax really slow, much slower than the neurologist wanted at first but neuro. gave us his ok to wean off slow. He also weaned on Keppra at a slow dosage. The Keppra worked ok and then he had a few other seizures, one he actually ended up w/ a compression fracture in his back.
I am taking vimpat ,keppra, zonegran and potiga. not sure how much to take already taking max of keppra.
You can safely consider it as an isolated and unrelated skin infection. And you can think of adding Lamictal. Keppra is anyways used as an additional drug.
If a person has epilepsy since they were a child and requires an anti-convulsant it should be noted that some anti-convulsants are used as mood stabilizers such as Depakoate, Trileptal, Keppra and of course Lamictal (and others) but the dosage and adjustment for bipolar would be different. Since some medications can on occassion raise the seizure threshold it would involve a close conversation between your neurologist and psychiatrist as for what medication is right for you.
My son is 11 years old and has been seizure free for 3 years. He is on Lamictal and Keppra. We decided with the doctor to wean him off the Keppra. We will be finished weaning tomorrow. About a week ago, he started a tic of clearing his throat. Today, he started a facial tic of raising his eyebrows, flaring his nostrils and pursing his lips. Are these tics a form of seizure? Are they a side effect of coming off the Keppra? Will they go away? Any insight would be appreciated!
