Keppra and antibiotics

Common Questions and Answers about Keppra and antibiotics

keppra

Hi, I have seen that in amongst the Keppra side effects, 'infections and sinusitus' are mentioned. I have been on Keppra for four years now and whilst it has been a fantastic break through for control of my seizures, I am getting debilitating colds lots and lots of times a year. If a common cold is going round, I will always catch it, but it seems to effect me ten times worse, I'm laid up for 2 weeks with what feels like flu, but Im sure is only a cold.
she keeps getting one infection or another at least twice a month and is put on antibiotics. She gets cold cough very frequently. My main concern here is...does leviteracetam lower the immunity levels of children and does it cause repeated infections as a side effect? And can you throw some light on the possible causes of continuing episodes of seizures despite giving medications for the same?
However, this week I've had a bad urine infection and was admitted in to hospital for 24hrs to be put on an intravenous drip of antibiotics and now I'm back home I've got another 5 days of tablets to take. 3 days after leaving hospital I suffered a daytime siezure (my first ever one) in the middle of the street - which was quite frightening.
He had just recovered from a sinus infection and was on eye antibiotics for a sliver in the eye. (Glucose was at 62) He was put on Keppra 500m twice a day. His EEG was normal 2 days later. The pressure in his head was back, with headaches, dizzy and blackouts... (Never fully fainting) He went to the Cardiologist and failed the Tilt Table Test after 16 minutes and has been put on 6-9 grams of Salt supplementation daily.
Is it common, to shout, when having seizures? Do the risks of Keppra outweigh the risk of seizures? Does anyone know why a person would have a circulation problem, beginning at birth, which causes more and more problems, from birth on up through adulthood? Thank you, in advance, to ANYONE who can help me. Even if you don't know what I have, but you share the same symptoms - that would be great, too. Maybe, together, we can conquer this.
In early 2012 I thought I had a toothache due to shooting and burning pain so I called the dentist and went on a round of antibiotics and the pain left eventually. About a month later I had a burning pain in my ear and it felt as if my eardrum burst but when I had someone look inside, they said it was fine. I then had a lot of vertigo and dizziness.
I know that with pregnancy seizures can increase in about %30 of women and I've done research and found another med that can be safer... i'm on BCP's but the med causes them to not always work like they should (like antibiotics would do) so I take vitamins and 4mg (MG not Mcg) of Folic acid daily...just in case.
or was watching the world through a movie projector, instead of through my own eyes and mind. Therefore, I am going to share with you all what *I* know about these phenomena, and hopefully reassure some of you that this is par for the anxiety course...it while irritating, maybe even maddening...it is totally harmless. Derealization and depersonalization are two terms that are sometimes used interchangably. Truth is, they DO vary a little bit in their presentation....
Last week she got a strep infection in a cut and was hospitalized with IV antibiotics, she is now home and continuing on antibiotics. Since she has started the antibiotics ahe has had NO breakthrough seizures of seizure symptoms. What should I do? Do you think she may have something else and not epilepsy?
Interesting, in the past few months I have been changed to Keppra and lamotrigine (lamictal). In recent weeks, my urine has developed a strong, unpleasant odour. I've had my urine tested, been on a course of antibiotics (tests came back to shoe no infection) and yet the smell is persisting. Not an asparagus fan, and can't think what else might have caused it...
However, he said it could NOT be causing me so much pain. He checked out my arm and noticed a hard soft tissue knot, and suggested removing it through surgery and it "might" relieve my pain. So, 3 weeks ago I had the said surgery and it was removed (a hard soft tissue mass about the size of a marble). No, this was not the cyst inside my humerus bone. Anyways, I still have the pain, and it is extremely terrible at night (on a scale of 1 to 10, a 20 at night).

I do not smoke but do have epilepsy I take Keppra for and have had no seizures for several years now. I eat junk food and do not work out much, but am going to start changing this soon. About 10 days ago, I had severe chest pains I had never had before, that lasted for 2 days. I thought it may be heartburn, so I took some Nexium and ate a bunch of Rolaids with no help. The only thing that helped was when I laid down it felt better.

Needless to say last night after i returned home the symptoms returned, i have not had a bad episode but my head will start aching in my sinus area and the back of my neck will get tense and i will just start getting nervous and even emotional. i have never had anything like this happen and i have had no traumatic experiences lately and no family history of anything like this. i am wondering if what i am experiencing may be a result of this bad sinus infection i am battling.
In addition, here are the medications I am on for a daily basis due to seizures and ADD (Keppra, Gabapentin and Concerta) and started Augmentin today to finish my sinus infection off and that ends in 10 days. THANKS!!!
He now gave me 10 days of antibiotics, METHYLPREDNISOLONE and changed my pain medicine with HYDROCODONE-ACETAMINOPHEN (NORCO) 10-325 MG. I am feeling a little better now. Less pain in right side only. waiting for more days.
I followed up with both my Primary and the Neuro a couple of weeks later, and both agreed to keep me on Keppra Extended release. (Taking 1500 mg/day) The Neuro told me at the office visit that he was now confident that I was indeed having seizure activity after all after looking closer at my hospital chart and talking to the ER staff who witnessed at least 6 of them that first day. The Neuro suggested that I get a nerve conduction test to see if neuropathy was playing a part in it.
Having vascularitis would show that Crohn's is linked to my neurological problem, though it's rare. I'm also starting Keppra, and anticonvulsive. Thank you so much for encouraging me to go to the doctor, hopefully I am now on the right track.

She has tried him on Lamictal and Keppra, the latter having very unpleasant side effects that he does not want to live with and neither med has stopped the jerking. The condition seems worse when he is very fatigued which is often due to his job. I am wondering if Lyme's can lay dormant and cause problems years later. He has not pain or muscle weakness. He is not overweight and exercises as often as he can when home. He is not on medication for any other medical condition.
So i had several Sinus X Rays which showed up nothing (thank goodness) and i was on antibiotics for almost entire yr but no change, i still kept getting these strange headache attacks and in between attacks i would get this boring dull ache in between my right eye and top of nose. Then my GP referred me to ENT. When i saw the ENT, he simply said this isnt ENT problem but a nerve ending problem and said that i needed MRI scan.
Its been 4 months and I am still not well-at all. I have dizzeness, severe headaches and pain, and always feel like im under water or in a fog. Oh ya I stammer a lot and have memory loss and am so very tired and just wiped out. Sometimes I dont see things right. When will this all end? Can someone tell me what kind of meds works best for the pain in the head. I tried Vicodin but got tired of being nausea, Then I was on Butalbital and that was worse-didnt help the pain.
He is currently on Keppra. He gets another EEG in January and I believe he will also get another CAT scan at that point. Youth is an amazing healing power but it still takes time.
It has progressed to constant never ending muscle twitching and rippling in my legs, feet, arms, and occasionally in my abdominal and rib muscles. I now have severe cramps after a very vigorous episodes of these twitches and rippling areas. It is scary when this happens in my lower ribs as it is hard to breath. I have also visually and literally lost muscle mass in my right leg and it is weakened and has affected my normal gait.
Boomer has been a liver shunt dog all this time and now the symptoms are getting worse. She is now on antibiotics and the sugar fiber stuff ... can't remember the name) Changed her diet from raw Kangaroo and Steel cut oats to a liver detox of white potatoe ...sweet potatoe...celery...zucchini...and fresh cod. I will be starting her on Milk thistle tomorrow. I'll also start her on enzymes and probiotics. I'm going to see a dog nutritionist and naturopath .
