I am Type ll diabetic taking metformin & Januvia. My levels are climbing and the Dr. is considering insulin for me. I do not want to be insulin dependent. Trying to lower with diet changes but have other health issues that restrict what I can eat. I have high cholesterol (can't take any statin drugs to lower), diverticulosis,irritable bowel, fibromyalgia and now a mouth full of braces so am unable to eat many things because my teeth do not hit together to chew.
So here is the thing been diabetic for you a few months now and i have been through alot of pills and my doctor hasn't keeps upping them i seen him today and he gave me insulin to take.. but he still wants me to take all the pills is it to much it would be
1000mg metformin 2x a day
100mg januvia a day
4mg glilmapride 2x a day
20units of lantus

For many patients, as long as you are checking your blood sugar levels, this is fine. But your doctor should guide you in this. Please let us know what you think and how you are doing.
If it has been many years, then, yes, it is probably time for her to go on insulin. But she should not continue on with her blood sugar out of control, but should see her doctor right away to talk about whether other meds would help or insulin is called for. Sustained high blood sugar can have seious complications.
i am losing my insurance so i cant take januvia. What should i take?
We have decrmy Lantus to 10eased units in the even. and 1/2 Amaryl in the a.m. and p.m. I also take Januvia 100mg, and 2000 mg Metformin a day. My A1c has been 6.6 for a few years now, but have moved and have a new Dr. who wanted me to try the Victoza. My BS are running 154 (No lower) to as high as 272. OCCASIONALLY I might have a reading as high as 272 (My B'day celebration had to many sweets) :(. but not this high On a regular basis.
Insulin is your friend not your enemy. Using insulin will give you excellent control (with a bit of learning how to properly use it), along with diet and exercise.
Everyone I have ever talked to with diabetes only say they wish they had started insulin earlier than they actually did.
Don't be afraid. take the plunge and do it. With such high blood sugars, the alternative, of not treating properly, is a sure signing of a death warrant - and one that is probably painful and drawn out.
I do not eat before exercise at five thirty every day. I am taking metformin glimperide januvia and atenolol for my high blood pressure. Before i exercise blood sugars are 156. After exercise they go to 226. Why? I take my meds about fifteen minutes before my exercise routine. Blood sugars continusously drop as the day goes on. before dinner time they can be 100. after eating they drop to 60 sometimes.
But my doctor is not in that school, he is happy for readings under 7.00.
t get byeta, are there any similar drugs that are covered under your plan? Byeta is a class of drugs called insulin mimetics. This includes Byeta/ Bydureon, Victoza, Januvia, among others. Maybe your Dr can check if any of the others are covered and may be of help for you.
If you cannot get these drugs, you may want to try a low carb diet (low carb, moderate protein, and fat for balance of energy). Some people find this way of eating helps both blood sugar control and weight management.
I have had an sinuse infection since sept on and off I was given steroid shot in sept which at that time I was dx with diabetic due to lab work showing 356 bs non fasting but I also had a white count of 20 thousand took antiboctics cleared up some but was back with in weeks white count up, now when i start to get high white count by bs goes up, I have had sinuses drainage with color, headaches neck aches, I had ct scan which states 1.
My mother is 79 years old, She had colon cancer in 2000 and when they removed the tumer and part of her colon they also had to take most of her bladder because the tumer had invaded the bladder they also took her overies. She was left with a bladder the size of a quarter.
Since 1995 she is battling with breast cancer, and in 2002 she had a cauda equina syndrome and she has limited mobility, therefore exercise is not an option. Her recent tests showed that her sugar is very high (277). Immediately she prescribed Metformin and Januvia. Her body did not react well on Metformin and we switched to Glupizide 5mg once a day in the morning. She continues to have out of control sugar.
Sorry to be getting back to you after all these months. I am maintaining a stage 3 and was on a 3 month regiment of vitamin d and we also eliminated metformin. I take Amaryl now, instead.. My blood glucose was out of control but my PCP put me on Victoza. That seems to be helping with the exception of BS levels being very low in the morning. My PCP has suggested she might take me off the Amaryl and just have me take more insulin along with the Victoza and Januvia.
