Common Questions and Answers about Itchy skin on dogs

itchy

Avatar n tn I have been dealing with itchy skin since I moved in with my fiance. He lives in an old house but has renovated the majority of it and checked for impurities in the air. I try to put lotion on to help with dry skin and we use a water softener. I do not shower in real hot water so that can be ruled out as well. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs that live in the house, but my cats never made me itch in my previous home, and the dogs no longer sleep on the bed.
Avatar m tn ve been using the dermacton shampoo bar, cream and spray on our dogs intense itchy areas, rashy bumps and flacks skin and it's looking great. I definently will continue with these products! Check out the website and see for urself and spread the word cuz this stuff REALLY DOES WORK:)!!!!!!!
Avatar n tn It really soothes the skin and has been quite helpful for my itchy dog. From your post, I assume you have ruled out fleas as a cause? That was the first thing my vet said when I took my lil guy in when he was biting off all of his fur by his tail. My vet also gave me an ointment called Dermalone. Seems to help but the oatmeal bath works better. The humidifier might help. Give it a shot. Good luck!
Avatar n tn I recommend starting by taking your dog to your veterinarian for assessment of the itch and medication recommendations. The most common reasons for itchy skin in dogs include skin infections, microscopic skin parasites such as scabies mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. Since scabies mites are difficult to find, I trial treat dogs for scabies with Revolution every 2 weeks for 3 treatments.
Avatar m tn The ears are lined with skin, so itchy ears in both dogs and cats are an extension of the same types of infections. Your veterinarian will need to make the correct diagnosis in order to properly treat the infection. However, one thing that vets don’t talk about much is why infection occurs. In holistic terms, infections are always secondary; the skin is unhealthy for some reason (often nutrition-related), and then invaders like bacteria, yeast, and fungus can get a foothold.
Avatar n tn Could be dry skin or mites, like ear mites in your dogs ears. Cats get these mites too. Check the dogs ears and if not, maybe could be simple case of dry skin or possible allergy. Check with your vet of course.
Avatar n tn Has he been scratching frequently? Allergies can cause dry spots on a dogs skin, hot spots is there common termonology, and it is allergy season. My pooch would get them along with other itchy and swollen symptoms. Now he gets zyrtec everyday and the spots and other symptoms have all but disappeared. Check the skin in his ears, and around his belly. If you notice red blotches, I would suspect allergies. Consult a reputable vet to be sure. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Dark scaly spots on the skin can be due to a localized skin infection, most commonly bacterial or yeast, less commonly ringworm/fungal infection or demodex mange mites. The increased licking (which is the way dogs scratch themselves when they are itchy), suggests infection is causing itch. The skin increases pigment as a protective response due to the inflammation.

The most common reasons for itchy skin in dogs include skin infections, microscopic skin parasites such as scabies or demodex mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. The red spots and hairloss/swelling of the foot the you describe are suspicous for a bacterial skin infection.
Avatar n tn And yes it is itchy. No chemicals or insect bites exposure. I saw the rash yesterday and his skin is peeling off only because he scratches it but I told him just to try not to scratch...I gaave him some tea tree oil soap for his hands. My daughter is still applying the steroid cream. I will tell her to get a refferal for a specialist.
1754037 tn?1327886811 Lately I have noticed when I am around my dog I get all itchy :( & like my skin is on fire afterwards! I have never been allergic to dogs before! Avatar f tn Skin disease in dogs is never simple. The goal required for truly successful (and rational) treatment is to get a diagnosis. Allergy is a broad category which includes several subtypes, each of which behaves and responds differently. The word allergy, therefore is not a diagnosis. Expect the workup for recurrent or non-resolving skin disease to require repeat visits and a series of tests and trials over time to sort out. At this point the dog has been seen once and treated once.
82818 tn?1206989814 any subjection on itchy skin for small dogs. I've tried prednisone pills. All kind if shampoo's and after a couples og days she's back to rolling on the carpet and scratching. It just drives her carzy. She is a 5lds yorkie.
Avatar m tn My parents have 2 malteses that I'm taking care of at the moment. They've been itching themselves for about a week now. They'd constantly turn and scratch with their hind legs and lick their paws. It's clear that somethings bothering them. On their skin are rashes. They look like splotches of red dots in random places. I'm wondering what this could be. Or if it could be contagious to humans.
Avatar f tn Allergy would manifest itself as a red bumpy bacterial infection (what lay people call a rash) or yeast on the skin. Usually itchy for the dog. If that's not happening then I would think possible thyroid issue which can be tested for in a simple blood test and easily treated with medication. Thyroid usually causes patchy hair loss with no other symptoms.
Avatar n tn Thax for your help with itchy skin. Please can you tell me the cream that you used and how I can get hold of it because God knows I have tried all sorts.
Avatar n tn Malassezia, a skin yeast can also turn the skin black but this hyperpigmentation is usually secondary to skin allergies and inflammation. You may have to have this biopsied or have a skin scraping performed at your vet's for a definitive diagnosis.
Avatar n tn s been scratching so much with her 3 good legs and anything she can rub against that she tears her skin on her neck and head, and her fur is thinning out in small areas. When we inspect her skin and ears, we don't see any mites, but we do see dry flakes and small scabs. On top of that, she developed a tremor in her head in the last week or so - it appears when she's "scratching" herself with her phantom leg.
Avatar f tn but soon after that i guess you could say, i started to get a few red bumps on the inside of my upper thighs. they became VERY itchy. Then recently a few bumps appeared on my lower legs (calves) and im quite confused! I thought it was mosquito bites but it does not look like that! i also have dogs that sleep in my bed but i'm pretty sure flea bites don't look like that! I'm thinking about going to a deteramotologist to figure out whats wrong.
Avatar n tn With benadryl his skin is getting better the bump seems to have dried up some to me. I looked up on a pet MD we site about it and it said it was associated with allergies. Had anyone ever seen this. Well it go away with allergy medication or with he need something stronger?
