Itchy skin in dogs treatment

Common Questions and Answers about Itchy skin in dogs treatment

skin

Avatar n tn I recommend starting by taking your dog to your veterinarian for assessment of the itch and medication recommendations. The most common reasons for itchy skin in dogs include skin infections, microscopic skin parasites such as scabies mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. Since scabies mites are difficult to find, I trial treat dogs for scabies with Revolution every 2 weeks for 3 treatments.
Avatar m tn The ears are lined with skin, so itchy ears in both dogs and cats are an extension of the same types of infections. Your veterinarian will need to make the correct diagnosis in order to properly treat the infection. However, one thing that vets don’t talk about much is why infection occurs. In holistic terms, infections are always secondary; the skin is unhealthy for some reason (often nutrition-related), and then invaders like bacteria, yeast, and fungus can get a foothold.
Avatar n tn I have been dealing with itchy skin since I moved in with my fiance. He lives in an old house but has renovated the majority of it and checked for impurities in the air. I try to put lotion on to help with dry skin and we use a water softener. I do not shower in real hot water so that can be ruled out as well. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs that live in the house, but my cats never made me itch in my previous home, and the dogs no longer sleep on the bed.
1380814 tn?1285965586 This topical parasiticide is effective in treating a number of different parasitic infestations in dogs and cats. For dogs with scabies, the treatment is applied topically, then repeated 2-4 weeks later. All dogs that have come into contact with an affected animal need to be treated as well. A veterinarian should be consulted about the most appropriate treatment plan. People with suspicious lesions should consult a medical dermatologist for evaluation and treatment.
683609 tn?1226764977 I recommend starting by taking your dog to your veterinarian for assessment of the itch and medication recommendations. The most common reasons for itchy skin in dogs include skin infections, microscopic skin parasites such as scabies or demodex mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. The red spots and hairloss/swelling of the foot the you describe are suspicous for a bacterial skin infection.
Avatar f tn The increased licking (which is the way dogs scratch themselves when they are itchy), suggests infection is causing itch. The skin increases pigment as a protective response due to the inflammation. Additionally, older dogs can develop flat pigmented skin areas as an aging change, but anything that is raised or bumpy raises the concern of a melanoma or other skin tumor. I recommend that you take her to your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment.
Avatar f tn Skin disease in dogs is never simple. The goal required for truly successful (and rational) treatment is to get a diagnosis. Allergy is a broad category which includes several subtypes, each of which behaves and responds differently. The word allergy, therefore is not a diagnosis. Expect the workup for recurrent or non-resolving skin disease to require repeat visits and a series of tests and trials over time to sort out. At this point the dog has been seen once and treated once.
Avatar f tn com/products/dogs/dry_food/sierra_mountain_canine_formula/ How long does it take for a dog food to completely be in a dogs system? or i guess how long will it take for the food with grain in it to get out of his system. The hot spot spray is suppose to dry them out? Its really oily & says on the bottle for itchy dry skin... He seems to be doing a little better with it too.
Avatar f tn Harvey is a german shepherd, 2 years old, he is suffering from scabies, or sarcoptes scabae, it's a skin disease, the vet said, there are miniature mites or hives living in my dog's skin. They already give all the medicine, but harvey is still suffering for this disease. The worst is they told me that the only choice is mercy killing... because they already done their best as possible. But harvey is still eating and strong, so please help me find a treatment for my dog harvey...
Avatar n tn ll need to take your dogs to the vet where he can look at a skin scraping under a microscope to verify the presence of mange mites - or not. These little bugs cause terrible itching in infected dogs, and can lead to hair loss and skin infections requiring antibiotics. You've done a really good job trying typical home remedies, but I think you need some professional advice at this point.
Avatar n tn I adopted a 5month pit bull from a shelter, she was brought from Kentucky to Chicago. She seemed fine but started itching. The vet put her on antibiotic, did a skin test, the vet didn't see anything. She did have a rash all ovethe vet said it could be scabies(mange)She has been on prednisone for 8days and on 2nd. treatment of revolution. She was doing great but now for 2 days she's itchy again and has scratched her upper leg raw. What can be causing this? Can it still be the mites?
Avatar f tn Yes, you CAN turn this around......Her Iams food was not much better, but the Blue is Excellent! If she tolerates it well, then continue to use it.....I personally would try the Blue Wilderness blend instead because it is grain free..... She MUST get some moisture in her diet! Blue CANNED foods are excellent and she needs to eat canned at least 1 meal a day....Both meals would be better for awhile....All dogs need added moisture in their diets & especially skin disease dogs!
662972 tn?1270166301 t flea bites? Most dogs get fleas sometime in their lives. If you have treated her for fleas very recently, then maybe not. I always use Frontline for my dog because it's the one I trust. It costs a little more, but is safe. Some flea treatments I feel are unsafe. Dogs can get mosquito bites too. Even though you say your dog is an "inside dog" she will have some times outdoors, when she will go near grass and such I guess. That's maybe where she got bitten.
Avatar n tn You need to make an appointment with your vet to see what the cause of the redness is. If it's in both ears, it could be caused by allergies or he could have a yeast infection in his ears. A yeast infection, while not as easy to clear up as a run-of-the-mill ear infection, CAN be cured with medication.
Avatar f tn As Dr. Smith recommends, you need to contact your physician about treatment options in humans; as in dogs, some people are more sensitive to the bites. I would also recommend that all mammals in the household be treated with a more reliable insecticide for cheyletiella, such as Revolution, ivermectin, or Frontline spray, as I have had less success with Frontline Spot on. I usually will treat every 2 weeks for 4 treatments, as well as continue environmental control.
Avatar f tn Dogs chew their feet because the feet are itchy. Causes for itchy feet include allergies (ie to pollen, grass, or food), bacterial or yeast skin infections, and skin mites/parasites. The bad odor suggests that infection is present, and veterinary exam is needed to identify the type of infection so that appropriate medications can be prescribed. The bad breath may also be due to dental disease.
Avatar f tn Welcome to the Dogs Community! :-) The cheesy white drainage makes me think it's follicular cysts. Basically, the hair follicles get clogged and the tiny sebaceous glands underneath can't drain properly which results in a pimple or cyst. Think of it along the lines of humans with certain kinds of acne. Like humans, some dogs just produce more oil in their skin, and there's not much to be done for it.
Avatar n tn s kindda rare but it does happen. OCD in dogs is a bit more comon I believe. Hopefully, your cat has a skin condition which can easily be treated. OCD is much more treaky. One of the magazines I get on my email has this article which I hope you'll find interesting in case the vet tells you she has absolutely no skin conditions but her condition is behavioral. Here is the article.
Avatar m tn Hypothyroidism can also cause hairloss on the trunk, is diagnosed by blood testing, and treated with lifelong thyroid supplementation. Hypothyroidism also is more common in older dogs and would be less likely in a 2 year old dog. Sometimes young pugs can develop seasonal flank alopecia (hairloss and dark skin on the sides) that can be helped by oral melatonin administration. Avatar n tn Could be dry skin or mites, like ear mites in your dogs ears. Cats get these mites too. Check the dogs ears and if not, maybe could be simple case of dry skin or possible allergy. Check with your vet of course.
Avatar f tn my dog has lost hair in a couple of patches on his chest, they are realy itchy and drive him mad, also he constantly has a poorly ear he rolled on the grass the other week and gave a right yelp, inside the ear is very very dry like ecsma and had a tint bit of dry yellowy wax he keeps scratchin that too, is there anything i could use on his chest and ear? p.
Avatar n tn The most common reasons for itchy skin in dogs include skin infections, microscopic skin parasites such as fleas or mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. Your veterinarian can take skin scrapings to examine under the microscope for parasites and for skin infection. If your dog is not already on a good monthly prescription flea preventative such as Frontline, Advantage or Revolution, then your veterinarian can prescribe an appropriate choice.
Avatar f tn I breed toy poodles. I have three pups right now that arec10weeks and within the last 3 weeks I'm noticing more scratching in all three pups and hairless on their necks from scratching. No fleas. Vet has given them one dose of advantage once a week, their second treatment will be this monday. He thought MAYBE it could be walking dandruff but he says may not be as there's no dander full or flakey skin at all.
Avatar f tn I can't see it being just your laundry detergent if its only happening in bed. You wash your clothes in the same detergent and they're in closer contact with your skin. Vacuum your mattress and bedroom as thoroughly as possible daily for a couple of weeks. ( buy a new mattress if you can afford to) buy and use a mattress protector, air the room as much as possible and lastly (youre not going to like this) keep the dogs off the bed.
Avatar f tn I was feeling itchy after taking the dogs for a walk so i decided to jump in the shower. Well im out, and im still itchy!! Everywhere, head to toe!!! Gaaahh!! And i shower with cool water, and put lotion on, so i know my skin isn't dry.
