Is oxycontin and morphine the same

Common Questions and Answers about Is oxycontin and morphine the same

oxycontin

Avatar f tn no it is not the same oxy is more potent and is hard to get off so is hydro but the w/ds are suppose to be a lil harsher but they all suk
Avatar f tn If the oxy stopped working as well, i switched to morphine at the same strength and vice versa. I have been only on MSContin and Dilaudid for 5 years now. I lowered my pain medications drastically over a matter of about 10 years.
Avatar n tn I dont see how it could show up different, since the active drug in both oxycodone and oxycontin is the same drug, oxycodone. Oxycontin has been formulated where part of the drug is released as soon as you take it and the rest is made do dissolve more slowly. Thats why your not supposed to chew or break the tablet. It's like taking morphine IR or morphine ER. They will both show up as morphine.
Avatar f tn not exactly..oxy in theory is a bit stronger than hydro..and sub is a different type of narcotic than the other 2..but conversoin charts do compare the strength of sub to other narcotics..but it is not really the effect they r comparing//but the strength...i do believe there is a conversion chart in avisg's journal...
Avatar m tn But ur answer to ur question oxycontin and morphine are the same thing. They are in the same family. They also have the same ingredients but the only thing is oxycontin is a little bit stronger then morphine.
Avatar f tn I have been on fentanyl, embeda and opana, Right now I have a spacer in my right knee because the staph infection was so severe they could not put in a knee yet so I still have one more surgery to go. My problem is the morphine er is not working or lasting so I have started taking 30mg of morphine with still no relief. My pain management doctor scared the crap out of me when he gave me narcon in case I overdose. I want to take 60mg of morphine to see if it will work but I am so scared.
Avatar n tn He saw a pain management team who had him on highest dose oxycontin, dialaudid, morphine (he had scripts for all at the same time!!!!). His family couldn't believe the amount of precribed pain meds they found in his apartment.. Really sad.............
Avatar f tn Oxycontin and morphine would have the same withdraw effects, so if you are lowering the sum of your normal dose of either you will experience some withdraw symptoms. It is what people go through when they taper their dose to detox.....not full blown wds but slowly cutting down. After 4-5 days your system will get used to the lower dose. Why are you taking so much pain meds? Opiates quit working on chronic pain after some time. That is probably why your doc is switching you from one to the other.
Avatar f tn It hard to cope. I know oxycontin is pregnancy category B and Morphine is pregnancy category C but I was curious if it is more likely for neonatal withdrawals form morphine or oxycontin? I think oxycontin has a higher molecular weight and therefore harder time crossing the mom baby barrier. Heard two moms taking 40 mg three times a day had no withdrawals, but didnt know it would be the same for the morphine or not. I am taking 15 mg twice a day of oxcycontin and 40 mg of oxycodone.
Avatar m tn I understand that only 25 percent of morphine is bioavailable to the system, and is not a very practical drug. Should he switch to oxycontin, in lue of his stomach issues? I am afraid if he stays on morphine he will have even further problems down the road. Any information regarding this matter would be GREATLY! appreciated! Thanks.
Avatar m tn t sleep on it so the next month he perscribed Opana. The pharmacist questioned why he is going morphine and not oxycotin. I asked the office girl and she said "He will never perscribe oxycotin". Why would that be? I have a guy in my program that has cancer and he gave me 2 oxycotin 40mg and they worked great. I have never abused my meds and have never tried to get a perscription early. Are most legit. doctors afraid to write a script for oxy's?
699217 tn?1323438700 Oxycontin and oxycodone are the same thing, EXCEPT oxycodone is a quick release tablet, and oxycontin is a slow release of the same med. Hydrocodone is the ingredient in Vicodin and Lortab. Although they are all narcotics, vicodin and lortab are lesser strength than the oxy's and morphine. The one I'm least familiar with is tramadol, although I've certainly read a lot about it, only taken it once.
517090 tn?1256727302 Just be honest and tell the doctor that the medication is not working as well as the one you were taken off of. Also VERY IMPORTANT, tell them you got some hydrocodone from your dentist! They can and will stop prescribing you narcotics if they find out and you did not tell them. You may just need a breakthru medication. Did the hydrocodone help with the morphine?
Avatar n tn Taking any kind of morphine or it's derivitives, including Oxycontin replicates the HCV virus. This is what I've read and I've posted this information a couple other times before. Methadone is a much better way to go as it is considered to be "liver friendly" and I hope nobody here needs to take anything for pain.
Avatar n tn Although Oxycotin come in 40 and 80mg Opana are more addictive even though they come in 10, 30 and 70 mg. This is because the it is a combination drug and is a mix of oxy and morphine. The problem is honestly probably that you are changing and the morphine is the change and now that you have stepped up you need more of the drug to feel better. How do I know this...I was on the exact same drugs a year ago.
Avatar m tn just know there r not many drs around who will rx this drug...i have used both the short morphine 15 ir and the long...i used them for pain when i had to cos they gave me no buzz...oxy and hydro do...so it was a safer pain med for me...but we r all different with different needs...
906738 tn?1251010478 It won't be hard because different opiates won't have the same interaction. If they switch him to Oxycontin and he's never taken it, it should work fine.
Avatar m tn All opiates and opioids convert to morphine in metabolizing them. The difference, for the most part, is that Oxy is a more consistent, factory and FDA regulated, pure form of the same drug, a morphine metabolite.
725248 tn?1316162245 It seems that your breakthrough meds, at 8 pills of 15mg of oxycodone a day is more excessive than the 20mg of Oxycontin. Sounds like it is backward. You get 60mg of long acting Oxycontin and then 120mg of oxycodone throughout the day. Sounds like that needs to be reconfigured. Maybe you could ask your doctor to go to 30mg of Oxycontin and then lessen the number of bt meds to 6 pills a day. That would still be the same amount overall. You say you know if they put you on 60 mg it would work.
1325672 tn?1290084214 What do they usually use? And my drug store has a sign. No Oxycontin in store. The store wants three days notice. So if they give me that tomorrow. I will have to wait.
Avatar f tn I am on the Fentanyl Patch and I have tried Oxycontin. So far the Fentanyl Patch seems to be working. As far as the Oxycontin, I have been on it and my body got immune very fast. So as you can see, I have tried about very thing. Pain Management now wants to put in a Pain PUMP. I am really twisted with those thoughts. Does any one have one? How is it and how does it work for you?
Avatar n tn Need to know can oxycontin be put into pump? If not what is closest thing? Hate morphine-diluadid has sulphites am allergic so oxycontin only thing can take.
Avatar m tn Welcome and Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I am sorry to hear about your previous reaction to Morphine. Are you experiencing any reaction or similar side effects with the long acting Morphine (Kadian)? As Dmoonchild said Kadian IS Morphine. There are several brand names for MS (Morphine Sulfate)..... but in the end they are all basically the same or similar chemical structure.
Avatar f tn They say it is the exact same thing, even the fillers. But if it were the pill would be the same size and it is not. Do you guys know that with generics they have this 10%, I want to say window whether they put the full 100% of the main drug. Why do you think so many generics aren't even equal to one another. Yes fillers can cause it but so can this 10% they chose to put in. You notice this more with Opioids and psychiatric, and even seizure meds. So NO they are not as good at all.
Avatar n tn I've gone through detox from being on fentanyl, oxycontin and norcos, so I know how you feel. Suboxone is better than the subutex. The reason you're not feeling the norcos is because you're taking a partial antagonist, which binds to your opioid receptors and blocks any other drug from doing the same. After you get off the suboxone, you will feel bad, mentally and physically, however, getting off the opiates is a good choice.
