Avatar f tn But I would like to try a Non Statin is there is one on the market, or would there be supplements that are available and have good results? Mainly I would like names of non statins to research and discuss.
Avatar n tn I take Red Yeast rice, it is the same as a statin without all those dangerous side effects. Also, increase your level of exercise and avoid all processed foods, sugar and alcohol.
Avatar n tn Pulse pressure is the difference in blood pressure between the systolic blood pressure and the diastolic blood pressure. Pulse pressure in healthy adults in a sitting position is about 40 mmHg. Your have a wide pulse pressure of 93mmHg.
Avatar m tn If you feel it is the Simvastatin, you can always ask your doctor about going off of it for a short while to see if it improves. This is a rare side effect of Simvastatin so I would look elsewhere for the problem. You should speak to your doctor.
Avatar f tn Simvastatin is a simple statin and is very safe. Your doctor would not put you on it for low HDL (good cholesterol) as it does not increase HDL, it lowers LDL or bad cholesterol. Do you know what your breakdown was? In any case, statins are very safe and proving to me more safe all the time. The risk of any side effect is anywhere between 2% and 5% which classifies this as very safe. Common side effects are muscle pain and sore joints.
Avatar n tn Has anyone gotten worsening of their PVC's from taking a statin drug? I seem to be intolerant of these drugs and have tried Crestor, Lipitor and Lescol. My PVC's go absolutely nuts when I take them. I have done my own tests by going off and on them. I consistently get worse when I'm on them. I take C0Q10 and a whole bunch of supplements including magnesium to no avail. Any feedback would be appreciated.
1806721 tn?1554333407 My questipn, however, is about whether statin drugs will raise blood sugar, causing pre-diabetes or diabetes? My paternal grandma has type 1 and my maternal uncle has type 2 diabetes. In the past 6 months, besides rapid weight loss, I also experienced fatigue, weakness, cold feet, dizziness, sudden drop of blood pressure, increased thirst and trips to restroom, low grade fever on and off with left side abdominal pain.
Avatar n tn I started with Lescol , then lipitor and now Crestor. The reason for these changes was to try to find a product that does not cause so much muscle cramps. This I decided I had enough. Craps in leg and foot musles have become unbearable. Can you suggest a remidy to avoid incresing my chol level again.
Avatar m tn I think you made the right decision starting on the statin. 275 is too high irregardless of the HDL, LDL, ratio, etc. A study was done on 2 groups of patients one with high HDL, the other low HDL and they had the same degree of coronary disease. The current metric seems to be getting the total <150 and the LDL < 80-100. Don't worry about the HDL, just focus on the total and LDL.
Tbd Does the medical profession REALLY know all there is about high cholesterol? I am in my 50’s and I have been told my LDL numbers are high. My cholesterol has been high all my life and even higher in the past due to some high stress life-choices. I eat healthy food; however, I eat more servings than I should and I now have some extra weight. I also have a low stress job, I am STILL active and work out, my heart is normal size, my blood pressure and sugar are almost perfect, my pulse if fine.
1962464 tn?1344606673 Lowering cholesterol artificially with a statin drug (in your case Simvastatin) is linked to numerous adverse side effects. An amazing article on Dr Mercola's website called "The Dark Truth About the "Wonder Drug" Millions Swear By" written by Dr. Stephanie Seneff, a senior scientist at MIT, posted 12 dangers of statin drugs. One of the dangers listed: "#8.
1273125 tn?1365077526 Then I tried a statin, a low dose 20mg. daily of Simvastatin. Today, my total cholesterol is around 135, I live on a Paleo diet, and my A1C is 5.7, down from a high of 7.2. I take it without any noticeable side effects. I might be getting "up there", but as you can see by the pictures on my page, I'm pretty active for an old guy. Are statins for everybody? Perhaps not. But don't just wholesale blow them off. It's just a pill.
Avatar f tn You should be taking omega 3 in any case. Statins, by lowering cholesterol, also interfere with the absorption of fat soluble nutrients, which of course includes omega 3. The most important for the heart is EFA, which is found in largest amounts in fish oil, but flax and hemp oil are also very high in omega 3 oils. But omega 3 oils don't do the same thing as statins. Statins lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, whereas omega 3 oils provide the good kind of cholesterol, HDL.
Avatar n tn That's a challenging situation. In that case I would consider coenzyme Q 10 high grade. This can mitigate some of the symptoms of myositis since he apparrently had some benefit. I have had good results in many cases.
Avatar m tn The reason red yeast rice works so well is because it contains a small amount of a natural statin called lovastatin. Lovastatin is the same compound found in the prescription drug, Mevacor. But unlike Mevacor, red yeast rice also contains other compounds like plant sterols that might have a positive impact on blocking cholesterol absorption.
Tbd Certain cholesterol medications have niacin added to them. What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
255163 tn?1376869746 Should I be on a statin. I have a des 4 yrs. Taking plavix aspirin, atenolol, simvastatin. My primary wants to take me off the statin. My chol is about 156, ldl 45, hdl 95 ,tri under 60.And I am diabetic. Last a1c 6.3. Is it safe to go off the statin.
Avatar f tn So, do you know what the strongest predictor is for someone to have muscle pain when taking a statin? Reading about it as a potential side effect. In studies, it happens less than 5% of the time but in real life, they get more complaints about it and tracked it to people having read about it. I found that really interesting for how the human brain works. Yes, statin muscle pain is reversible. It usually takes a pretty short time. As little as a week for many.
Avatar m tn of determining whether one uses a statin or not. It is simply one indication of a positive output of application of a statin - along with lowering of viral load and increased rates of SVR. I've cited studies on this, not just a personal opinion. merryBe: I respect your opinion here, but think about how most people take meds....not in a vacumn...they eat, drink thigs, and take meds...
Avatar m tn Is it a class effect all statins or just simvastatin?
1809109 tn?1331803777 I got put onto a new statin and in the handout the pharmacist gave me it says that my doctor should be "aware of any low thyroid hormone levels". I'm just curious what does hypothyroidism has to do with it? Is it just because it can cause high cholesterol or does it react to the drugs some way? If I stay on these and my Hashi's gets worse and I go hypo again is that going to cause problems?
Avatar f tn Prior to the statin I was below 100. I am not overweight, exercise consistently and eat very healthy. So the statin is the culprit. I am wondering if being stricter on carb intake and supplementing with Berberine will help? Or has anyone had better outcomes with other statins like livalo or pravastatin?
Avatar f tn I can certainly understand why losing weight seemingly out of nowhere after a cancer diagnosis is worrying. However, there is a link between receiving radiation treatment and weight loss. Please speak to your health care team about this. Studies have shown up to 65% of patients who receive radiation have weight loss. BOTH chemotherapy and radiation can affect appetite . I understand you aren't noticing any big changes with appetite.
Avatar n tn Are you sure the statin is the cause of the gout? If so then Doctor should recommend change in statin....there are many out there to choose from.
1441140 tn?1284085241 As Jon states, that is a baby dose. Familial cholesterol is a proven high risk, I'd take the statin. Also as Jon states, aspirin won't control cholesterol buildup and after taking both statins and 81mg aspirin daily for years (aspirin thins the blood) I've had much worse reaction to aspirin the statin. Aspirin can cause bruising/tearing of the skin. That said, your HDL level is great and should help control the LDL buildup greatly. I'd still take the statin.
