Avatar f tn Yes, I understand there is an interaction between victrelis and grapefruit and I learned it on this board too. Then I looked for the confirmatin on that and found it in Victrelis' labeling. I don't believe either Victrelis or Incevik have been used to treat HIV. They were just approved in May, 2011, for the treatment of Hepatitis C. They are in a class of new drugs that target the specific virus and there are HIV drugs that do the same - but not the same drugs.
Avatar n tn In contrast to the increased levels of the other medications, the grapefruit juice interaction observed with theophylline and itraconazole was reduced plasma concentrations. The mechanism for this effect has not been determined. Although the clinical consequence of the grapefruit juice interaction with most of the listed drugs has not been evaluated, increased plasma concentrations of many of these drugs could result in adverse outcomes.
Avatar f tn i need to know that, what is the interaction between juices of Grapefruit and Hepatitis C? is there any reactions of Grapefruit juice being taken by Hepatitis C patient?
Avatar n tn Several organic compounds found in grapefruit and specifically in grapefruit juice exert inhibitory action on drug metabolism by the enzyme. It has been established that a group of compounds called furanocoumarins are responsible for this interaction and not flavonoids as was previously reported.
Avatar m tn I like to drink grapefruit juice but hear that it can interfere with some prescription medications. Is that true? Answers from Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D. Yes. Grapefruit and certain other citrus fruits and products can interfere with several kinds of prescription medications. Don't take these interactions lightly. Some can cause potentially dangerous health problems.
Avatar m tn No interaction between both drugs. Note that some aliments like citrus, grapefruit extract can increase the potency of some drugs which is considered an interaction.
142526 tn?1397090672 The hepatic enzyme inhibition may cause an additional increase in potency and a prolonged metabolic half-life (prolonged metabolic half-life for all ways of drug administration).[32] The degree of the effect varies widely between individuals and between samples of juice, and therefore cannot be accounted for a priori. Another mechanism of interaction is possibly through the P-glycoprotein (Pgp) that is localized in the apical brush border of the enterocytes.

Avatar n tn It went on to mention certain prescription drugs that are affected by eating grapefruit and its juice. Typically, I eat two grapefruits a day! When I called my pharmacist, he said that it wasn't a drug that showed a high incidence of interaction with grapefruit, unlike the cholesterol lowering drugs. (Internet searches clearly showed that there is a connection). The pharmacist did however, say, that I should skip that night's dose and try to taper off.

Avatar f tn Grapefruit Warning While just a few of grapefruit’s many health benefits are described above, there is a bittersweet side to this popular fruit. Grapefruit and its juice can be dangerous to people who take certain medications. Amy Karch, RN, MS, of the School of Nursing at the University of Rochester Medical Center, an expert on drug interactions, explains that grapefruit juice is one of the foods most likely to cause problems with medications.
3093770 tn?1389739126 ___________________ The drug-grapefruit juice interaction is caused by inhibition of the intestinal cytochrome P-450 enzyme system, particularly cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP450 3A4), by 1 or more of the components in grapefruit juice.
976606 tn?1263667593 I'm not sure what the official medical answer is regarding grapefruit juice and Synthroid, but I have never noticed a difference when I drink pink grapefruit juice vs. any other juice. I know grapefruit juice is a no-no with certain meds (my Mom can't drink it because of one of her post-heart attack medications), but I have never seen any warnings regarding synthroid.

Avatar m tn I have stopped drinking fruit juice all together. I do eat berries and melons and may eat an orange or grapefruit later in the morning or afternoon, but never in the morning. There must be some threads on this subject. Have you done a search on your key words? Hope you get some specific experience help.
Avatar m tn However, tangelos, related to the grapefruit, and Seville oranges affect the same enzyme as grapefruit juice. Seville oranges are often used to make orange marmalade, and so be mindful when selecting this spread for your toast.<< From: http://drugs.about.com/od/medicationabcs/a/gjuice_drugs.
Avatar m tn This, initially the drug does not completely metabolize and has an extended half-life. This why it is dangerous to take grapefruit juice with certain medications. Follow me on this. You take a substance that reduces the production of these enzymes (say grapefruit juice) and for the first four hours the drug does not fully metabolize. After six hours the grapefruit juice wears off, the liver again starts producing these enzymes, and you take a second dose of the medication.
Avatar m tn If I take my statin in the morning can I drink grapefruit juice at night? how long between taking pills must I wait before having the juice?
Avatar f tn Several of my drugs (Lamictal, Seroquel, & Valium - at a minimum) interact w/ grapefruit. It's on all of the information that comes from the pharmacy and I didn't take it seriously until I got pretty toxic myself. I LOVE grapefruits & grapefruit juice and I miss them a lot. I also tend towards side effects and toxicity.
Avatar f tn I read those articles too. Some of them forget to mention that the level of naringenin concentration needed is impossible to achieve simply by drinking the juice, or even by taking supplements. I've drank grapefruit juice for 3 months, and it made me feel great, full of energy, plus my gallstones stopped bothering me. Yet, as for HCV, my viral load actually grew by the end of the third month. This is when I agreed to start tx.
1225178 tn?1318980604 Diane... On the sheet I was given when starting... "drugs and foods to avoid" grapefruit juice and seville oranges were listed on it. BTW...congrats on getting close to the end!
Avatar m tn p450 cytochrome, enzyme in the liver; grapefruit juice metabolizes it and changes the effectiveness of the riba while on tx; that means i guess you get the virus out of the blood but not out of your liver; do the math....
Avatar n tn hadn't heard that before...hmmm.. I know if you're taking any benzos (valium, xanax, etc) you don't want to drink grapefruit juice.. maybe some else knows? best wishes to you! I know this is hard. we're here for you!!
