Index finger pain and swelling

Common Questions and Answers about Index finger pain and swelling

finger

Avatar n tn Do you have numbness of the index finger along with the pain? if yes, it could be carpal tunnel syndrome as it involves index finger mainly. Another possibility is of Raynaud’s phenomenon which is constriction of the blood vessels of the fingers and toes. But it is accompanied by skin color changes. Apply ice compresses over the finger. You can also take OTC pain killers. They should help. Also get your blood sugar levels evaluated.
Avatar m tn The injury can lead to nerve damage and/or a local swelling involving the nerve. The localized swelling could be due to tendinitis or it could be a nerve tumor. The nature of the swelling has to be found out. If the lump involves the nerve, it should be carefully removed surgically. You will also need physical therapy for a fully functional index finger.
Avatar f tn It depends on where the pain and numbness is. There is a cause of numbness of the index finger and middle finger called carpal tunnel syndrome. It usually also has sensory changes of the palm at the thumb, index and middle fingers, and the ring finger on the side near the middle finger. I am not sure if you have these other features or not, but I will elaborate on this. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a compression/entrapment syndrome of the median nerve at the wrist.
Avatar m tn I am having pain in my Right index finger (knuckle) for almost two months now. I don't have any swelling, warmth, or redness around the site. Could it be related to the distal radius fracture surgery which I had one year back on my Left hand. Thanking you in advance for your highly valued advise.
Avatar n tn He suggested I switch to fat pens and pens with soft wraps. I did and the pain/swelling disappeared over a short time. Now, I'm very aware of how I'm holding my pens. Good luck!
Avatar m tn my index finger was impacted towards my pinky. After initial swelling of my whole finger and tendon pain, I remain with a swollen knuckle and below the knuckle but the top of my finger is normal. I cannot bend it as far as my other fingers and it is painful to go past 90 degrees with it. Will it heal on its own, or is there a way to prevent permanent limitations of it?
Avatar n tn This last month has been the toughest because of increased swelling and pain in my non-dominant index finger. It happens out of no where and gets to the point where it becomes dis colored and is totally useless! Diagonosis is RA and Psoriatic Arthritis. I have tried multiple medications which have provided little help. I start embrel tomorrow, adding it to methotrexate that I am already on. I thought I was crazy but it's comforting to know I'm not alone.
Avatar m tn s no swelling. My wrist pops easily. The central knuckles of my index finger, middle finger and ring finger all hurt. The index finger also hurt a few days at the base, but stopped. I have a doctor's appointment on the 7th. Sorry for the repeated posts; just a little worried and the appointment seems so far away. If you were me, what you lean closer to? Arthritis or tendonitis?
Avatar m tn Hi, welcome to the forum, the pain and swelling in the finger can be due to pulp space infection or traumatic arthritis. If there is throbbing type of pain suggests pus formation. This may not be due to allergy. The plain radiograph will help to rule out pathology. Finger splint may be needed to give an absolute rest to the finger. Pain killers with anti-inflammatory activity will helps to reduce the inflammation and antibiotics to control infection, against prescription.
Avatar m tn can a pinched radial nerve in c1 and c2 area cause a swelling in the index finger of the left hand ?
Avatar m tn I was tucking in my shirt and heard a pop, and then felt sharp pain in my index finger. Looking at it I noticed the top knuckle is bent in the direction it should bend at about a 45 deg. angle, but it will not straighten. It stays bent at 45 deg. even if I try to straighten out my finger. There isn't a lot of pain. It was numb last night and is still not 100%. The only pain and swelling are actually on the middle knuckle. What should I do?
1625195 tn?1332178662 But my middle finger, index finger and thumb are definitely numb and slightly swollen. My index finger, though, is the only finger experiencing some pain along with the numbness and swelling. Things to note: I did not bang my elbow on anything. I have rested it while sitting at my computer and have been bending it and actively using my left arm where my left arm has had to bend fast and flex out with more than ten pounds (lifting and putting away groceries mostly).
Avatar f tn I woke up two days ago and noticed that my left index finger was sore. The soreness is over to the side in the soft part of the index finger between the first knuckle and the nail. It hurts if I type or if I press on it in anyway. It also throbs a little and feels hot. There is no detectable swelling or any sort of cyst of any type but the pain has become more bothersome over the last 24 hours. What could be causing this? Should I be worried?
Avatar m tn First it started swelling on my index finger, with a couple of visible red dots under the skin, and then it started on my ring finger, but the swelling was different, it got swollen at one point beyond the big joint of the finger and another swelling at the smaller joint of the finger. This time the swelling was hard to the touch. Like two red dots. And then my little finger started swelling too, but this one was different also.
Avatar f tn I had my pins taken out Monday from my right index finger this week, and today is Friday. I still have minimal movement and much stiffness. My finger is stuck in the position it was as when the pins were in, and I am still unable to make a fist. Also my top part of my finger is pointed more towards my pinky finger than sitting in the normal position. Is this how it it will stay, or will this get better when my knuckle swelling decreases?
Avatar f tn Index finger on right hand swollen and painful to bend.. Hard to tell if pain is first or second knuckle.. Swelling is mostly at base of finger.. No warmth or redness noted.. Have "skiers" thumb for about a month now.. Just woke up and boom thumb was swollen at base.. Finger was little stuff and next morning swollen and painful.. As long as it's straight there is no pain.. Getting old is for the birds!!

1744581 tn?1311302411 I cut the knuckle of my R index finger on a deli/meat slicer 2 days ago, The ER dr said I had a layer of fat over the muscle left over the bone & that was it. I got 12 stitches. The dr didn't think I cut the tendon b/c I could move my index finger although I had a lot of pain. He diagnosed it as a AVULSION INJURY.
Avatar f tn I took some orally and it knocked out the swelling til I stopped taking them and then it came back. And got a steroid injection in my index finger which helped so much (I couldn’t move my Index all the way down and now I can pretty much can) but it’s still swelling. No numbness or tingling in the tips of my fingers. My whole arm feels tight and weak from not using it for months. So is it a sprain, a strain, arthritis? None of the three doctors I’ve gone too can diagnose me.
Avatar f tn When i was 11 a girl broke my right index finger at school and no one believed me when I said it was broken. So obviously it wasn't splinted or even buddy tapped. In the eight grade my mom took me to a doctor that told her that my finger did break and that the bone healed eight degrees off. After six months of trying to buddy tape it and splint it, the bone only moved two degrees. The doctor recommended surgery to pin and straighten out the bone and my mom decided on getting me the surgery.
18346959 tn?1465850804 The swelling is symmetrical and is only in one localized place on both hands and feet, on top of hands/feet going from between index and middle finger to my wrist/ between the big toes up my feet to almost the ankle. It looks like I have slugs under my skin. The swelling would go away completely at first but is slightly sticking around on both hands and feet. It seems to happen after using them for extended periods of time. I have a lot of pain in my hands and feet in general.
Avatar f tn I was playing football outside and my finger got jammed I think it got swollen and bruised and is hard to bend it's been a week now and it's not getting any better it's still brusied but not swollen it hurts to be touched on the bottom bone where it connects to the bone above it idk if I should go to the docter or not ?
Avatar n tn My index finger on my right hand has been swollen for quite a few months now. The swelling started spreading to my middle finger on the same hand. I went to a hand doctor, who did x-rays and an MRI. X-rays were normal, MRI showed "subcutaneous edema", which is swelling of the soft tissue in my two fingers. He ordered blood tests to test my ANA, RA, Uric Acid levels, white cell count, etc., which all came out normal.
Avatar f tn I had a burst vein in my finger and it got purple and had swelling. It happens. For me, it was when I was walking and my fingers swelled up (they do that somethings inexplicably) and I had my wedding ring on. I have a friend who is an orthopedic surgeon and he told me it was this. Ice it, rest your hand on a pillow above you when lounging on the couch, etc. I got better very quickly and let's see if you do as well.
Avatar f tn ve developed a strange symptom the last 3 days where my just the tops of my index, middle and ring fingers are in excuriating pain...no swelling, no redness - nothing....just pain...I feel I'm on the verge of a relapse - where my legs and face are getting painful, etc., but not full fledge yet. Could this be attributed to my MS ?
Avatar n tn When scalene muscle is the cause of pain, the pain is referred to (either all or a combination of) chest, inner lining of scapula (shoulder bone), shoulder, posterior and lateral sides of the arm right up to the thumb and index finger.
