When there is a capsular injury to a joint in finger, it is best to give the RICE treatment for a few days such as rest, ice application, compression bandage (you can strap the injured finger with the neighboring finger) and elevation (keep hands elevated on a pillow at bed time). You can also take an anti-inflammatory pain killer. Once the injury settles down and there is less pain you have to start physiotherapy.
My question is regarding the first joint of my right hand index finger. I believe it is called the proximal interphalangeal joint.
The joint has been very sensitive to the touch for a few weeks with no sign of abating. The joint also hurts a little if I bend it fully, but not nearly as much as if I just touch it with a little pressure.
I do not see any outward signs of injury. It is not red or swollen. I have no similar pains in any other fingers or joints.
I had surgery the following day and had 2 pins inserted into my index finger. I had those pins in my index finger for 4 weeks (just had them removed on 1/10/11).
I haven't been able to move that index finger for 4 weeks since the pins were still in there, as any movement in that finger caused extreme pain...but now my index finger seems to be stuck in that same position (slightly curved, as if holding a cup).
There is a test to confirm gout which involves removal of fluid from the joint, and having a rheumatologist examine the sample under a special microscope for crystals.
Gout is caused by a high level of purines, which are present in a diet high in meat, alcohol, shellfish, and a variety of other foods. You can find more information online.
As I said, it may not be gout.
I am 33, never had a memorable injury to this finger, and no other finger or body joints are a problem. I am going to schedule an appointment with a Rheumatologist today, as I have the feeling the Ortho will let me down tomorrow.
Does this sound like arthritis? Could this be something like reactive arthritis, despite having no other real substantial symptoms(like UTI or eye problems)? Any help is appreciated.

Do you have numbness of the index finger along with the pain? if yes, it could be carpal tunnel syndrome as it involves index finger mainly.
Another possibility is of Raynaud’s phenomenon which is constriction of the blood vessels of the fingers and toes. But it is accompanied by skin color changes.
Apply ice compresses over the finger. You can also take OTC pain killers. They should help. Also get your blood sugar levels evaluated.
The most pain arises deep in the wrist joint if I were to lean into my hand flat on the floor in the direction of my index finger knuckle while on my hands and knees, moderate pain arises over the scaphoid and in the insertion point of the tendon with extension of the hand while just standing up with no pressure of any sort, and mild pain over the lunate with flexion of the hand while standing up. This has been on going for many months and was not caused by any injury to the hand.
any amount of swelling in a small joint such as a finger joint can cause quite a bit of discomfort. It sounds like you "jammed" the joint(s). It can take a long time to resolve. Like 6-9 months. You could try soaking it in hot water to loosen things up and try to pull and put tension on the finger to loosen up the joint. Pull the finger slowly, steadily, and gently straight out. I have found this can help loosen it up and relieve some pressure in the joint.
First it started swelling on my index finger, with a couple of visible red dots under the skin, and then it started on my ring finger, but the swelling was different, it got swollen at one point beyond the big joint of the finger and another swelling at the smaller joint of the finger. This time the swelling was hard to the touch. Like two red dots.
And then my little finger started swelling too, but this one was different also.
The pain is just under and in front of the bone protrusion on the inside of my leg like right in the joint. I took some orally and it knocked out the swelling til I stopped taking them and then it came back. And got a steroid injection in my index finger which helped so much (I couldn’t move my Index all the way down and now I can pretty much can) but it’s still swelling. No numbness or tingling in the tips of my fingers. My whole arm feels tight and weak from not using it for months.
So is it a sprain, a strain, arthritis? None of the three doctors I’ve gone too can diagnose me.

I took a puck off of my right index finger and didn't really notice any immediate pain. Over the next couple days I noticed that I couldn't form a fist because my finger was very swollen and hurt to bend that far. Upon further observation I noticed that my first finger knuckle had become very wide, but the rest of my finger remained regular size. It is also very sensitive to touch.

Mine was significantly smaller (about 7mm diameter) and further up along my index finger near the second joint, but the depth is spot on. Is an injury of this depth any cause for legitimate concern?
I had convinced myself it was probably nothing to be concerned about until I started experiencing symptoms at almost exactly 3 weeks later. It's especially concerning for me because I hardly ever get sick.
I am a 56 years old female and in relatively good health. I take one medication for hbp. Recently the middle joints of my little fingers are very tender, red and tend to be very itchy, if that makes any sense and I've also begun noticing some tiny red nodules at the first joint of my index fingers and little fingers. Some times the nodules are a little more pronouced than other times.
Last year in July I hurt my ring finger on my right hand. It was due to catching a ball which struck the finger. I had pain throughout the finger, couldn't bend the joint closest to the finger nail. Xrays were taken at the ER and they suspected a crack on top of the joint that is located above the knuckle and also to the inside of this same joint (facing the middle finger). I did see my family doctor a week later and another xray was taken.
My index finger has chronic pain when it is exposed to cold temps. or if my circulation is lessened in that arm. It's just that finger and only at the finger nail, cuticle area. The feeling is similar to getting it smashed into something. Also, when no pain is present, if I hit it ever so slightly on something, it might as well have been smashed in a door, the feeling would be the same!
