Avatar f tn Eithne01, The treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has changed significantly since the late 1990s, with the development and subsequent approval by the Food and Drug Administration of imatinib (in 2001), the first of a class of medications called tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which target the specific abnormality that causes CML. Before that time, patients were treated with other therapy, including interferon and bone marrow transplant, and had very poor outcomes.
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with CML since Novmber of 2007. I am still a little confused about some things. and i guess when my WBC's got back to 4.5 I was excited and thought I was all good- In the clear huh... Well in less than a month my WBC's dropped back down to 1.8 and they say that I am good as long as I don't go past 1.5. Ok fine. I don't go back for another month and I already feel like **** and have had pneumonia 2x in the past month.
Avatar n tn My 24 year cousin is my best friend and was just diagnosed with CML and her doctors are very optimistic, but she has so many qiestions she is scared to ask. They are going to put her on the "Miracle Pill" will she lose her hair? Will is hurt her chances of have children? As optimistic as the doctors are, is there any chance that this is a fatal condition? We are scared should we be?
Avatar n tn Myelosuppression with neutropenia (decrease in neutrophils) and thrombocytopenia (decrease in platelet count) can be a side effect of treatment. Usually, discontinuation of drug intake is advised until the blood counts increase. You should have your white blood cell count repeated after 1-2 weeks and see if it already improves. You should report to your doctor if you experience any symptoms like fever.
Avatar f tn After have a slightly elevated WBC for about 2 years my primary sent me to a hematologist. Since my WBC ranged from 18.5 2 years ago and went down to 12 in Dec he didn't think it was anything serious but said he would follow me to make sure. In Jan WBC was still around 12 but he also performed a gene test and said the results were very suspicious. He said I had CML and scheduled a bone marrow biopsy for the following day when my husband could be with me.
Avatar m tn how to differentiate anemia because of the disease (in this case CML that hasn't got CHR in 3 month) and adverse effect of therapy (gleevec) ?
Avatar m tn Well as they monitored that and did blood work they also found the CML. Is this a common thing to have low heart rate with CML? As a coworkers friends daughter was also just diagnosed with the CML she too is having low heart rate issues. Sound like too much to be coincidence.
Avatar f tn My mother was diagnosed with atypical CML in April by her hometown doctor. She then went to Mayo and the doctor there told her she did not have Leukemia based on her blood work there, but she had been overdosed on Hydrea during the summer to the point her wbc was 3 and was only recovered to 11 by the time of her appt in Sept. Now her wbc is 58 and her hometown doctor is putting her back on Hydrea.
Avatar n tn My bf has CML and he had a partner who has HIV my question is can HIV be transmitted to him as he is already a CML patient ? My second question if he has both CML and HIV but the HIV is inactive what are the probability of me getting infected with HIV?
Avatar m tn I am a 32-year old female, with a history of eating disorders and alcohol addiction. Being honest, let's say dependence. In July of 2013, I had the misfortune of being hit by a car, as a pedestrian, and suffered tremendous injuries. I am currently on certain pain medications, including narcotics, Lyrica… and I supplement this with extra-strength Tylenol when need be. I am currently drinking, still… I had stopped for some time, but following a traumatic event, resumed.
Avatar f tn Polycythemia vera is an acquired stem cell disorder caused by mutations in the JAK2 gene. It is difficult to predict the exact outcome of this disease in a particular. Average survival rates are generalizations, not applicable to a particular patient. The prognosis is relatively good. Newer techniques are being tried, including imatinib and stem cell transplantation. All the best, and God Bless!
Avatar f tn He has been in and out of the hospital 5 times in the last month, taken 13 units of blood and several units of platlets but no internal bleeding has been identified. Where is all this blood going? Currently he is the hospital without any treatment scheduled. No one has been able to tell us what is happening to the blood that is being transfused into his body, yet they aren't doing anything about it. I don't understand. It's as though they are just waiting for him to die?
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with CML and given Gleevec 400 ml. After taking gleevec for 2 weeks doctor took additional blood test. My WBC dropped from 36.5 to 7.1 and all other blood counts came down to normal range. I'm wondering if gleevec could give such fast hematological response or I was possibly misdiagnosed originally. I don't and didn't have any symptoms, my spleen and liver weren't enlarged, no enlarged lymph. Should I get second opinion asap? Please, help me.

Avatar f tn My uncle was diagnosed with CML (chronic myeloid leukemia) His last full body checkup was a year ago and it was all normal back then. He regularly did full body checkup. My questions are 1) Could a person get into 3rd or 4th stage under a year? 2) Is there a cure for CML?
Avatar n tn If there are no abnormal white cells reported in your CBC, then CML may be unlikely, though still possible (it can also be that the abnormal white cells are still residing in your bone marrow and not in your peripheral blood). Another point against leukemia is that, though your WBC is above normal, the white counts of patients with actual CML are more likely to be higher than that of what you currently have.

Avatar f tn Hi, I agree w/ both CML and Eve that it might be dry skin. But, another possibility is that, if she is a curvy girl(extra weight) and the flakes are only on her back, she may not be able to reach her back when she's washing herself. My mom's cat is 3 yrs old and is dealing with that problem where he can't reach his back. My mom will get a damp paper towel and wipe his back and brush him. That does seem to help a bit.
Avatar n tn Just the same, there are a number of drugs with different resistance profiles in trials and much reason to have hope for better and more effective treatments in the years ahead.
