Avatar f tn Two completely different compounds. Tylenol, or acetaminophen has been deemed safe during pregnancy, ibuprofen, or Advil has NOT. As for aspirin, that's correct, it's a blood thinner.
Avatar n tn An arthritis pain medicine may not work for other kind of pain. In general, ibuprofen and acetaminophen are two most common active ingredients in most readily available over-the-counter pain relievers. Neither of them is completely safe. From what I learned, if you have little or no liver damage, you can use either ibuprofen or acetaminophen. But if your liver damage is more advanced, acetaminophen is safer AS LONG AS YOU DON'T OVERDOSE IT OR MIX IT WITH ALCOHOL.
1654058 tn?1407159066 Karen, Your platelets are already low, and NSAIDs can increase the risk for bleeding; imho, acetaminophen over the ibuprofen, hands down. With low platelets from tx and a compromised liver and kidney system, any of the NSAIDs are contra-indicated for you (includes Motrin, Advil, Aleve). Tylenol is not to be taken indiscriminately either, though. With cirrhosis, no more than 2000 mg per day max (that means no more than 4 Extra Strength Tylenol in any 24 hour period).

Avatar f tn My understanding is that cirrhotics should try to keep their acetaminophen (Tylenol) to 1000 mg a day or less. This means keeping track of any other pain meds he might take, like Vicodin or Tylenol PM, that contain acetaminophen. Whether or not he can take NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naprosyn) and how much he can take will depend on whether he has varices or any other gastric problems. He really needs a good doctor to examine him and advise him on these isues.

Avatar m tn over the years, I’ve found that most knowledgeable hepatologist/GI doctors will recommend Tylenol (acetaminophen) over other NSAID’s for minor pain relief. While acetaminophen is certainly hepatotoxic at large does, there is no evidence that it accumulates in the body; taken at recommended doses, it’s generally thought not only to be safe but preferable to NSAIDS.
6708370 tn?1471490210 Australian researchers reviewed three randomized trials that compared acetaminophen with a placebo for the relief of spinal pain, and 10 trials that compared their use for easing the pain of osteoarthritis. Acetaminophen was given orally in doses between 3,000 and 4,000 milligrams a day, except for one study in which a dose of 1,000 milligrams was administered intravenously.
1064524 tn?1257199755 t your doctor just put you on 5mg. Oxycodone or 7.5 mg Hydrocodone without any acetaminophen for breakthrough pain? If you are being prescribed the acetaminophen for the anti-inflammatory properties there are other drugs that can be prescribed in addition to the narcotics. 1331298 tn?1276613414 Most knowledgeable hepatologists tend to recommend Tylenol/acetaminophen for over the counter pain relief. Aspirin and NSIAD’s can prolong clotting time; something that people with advanced liver disease often have trouble with. Additionally, they can cause GI irritation as well. Although acetaminophen can be toxic to the liver in large doses, there is no evidence that it’s cumulative. Taken as directed, it’s considered safe even for patients with compensated cirrhosis. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ “Jorge L.
Avatar f tn Liver pain would be a symptom that showed up later in liver damage. If you stay with what your doctor prescribes, you should be fine. I don't think you have anything to worry about, especially since your doctor checked your liver enzymes. I'm sure you're aware that a lot of things have acetaminophen in them. So you just want to make sure you don't take anything else that has it in it. You also shouldn't drink alcohol, especially if you're at the upper limit.

You can also grab a bag of something like frozen peas from the freezer and lay the bag on the area It also will reduce swelling and make the area feel better. This is sex gone bad. I'd really be more careful about what you do and don't do.
Avatar m tn I recommend you talk to your doc, and address your concerns about the meds you are on, and ask about an alternative to the acetaminophen/ibuprofen/asa combo type pain meds. Just because an alternative may be an opiate doesn't mean they aren't right for you, or bad for you. It all depends on your circumstances, which only you and your doctor can know.
