Ibuprofen vs acetaminophen for fever

Common Questions and Answers about Ibuprofen vs acetaminophen for fever

ibuprofen

Avatar f tn Two completely different compounds. Tylenol, or acetaminophen has been deemed safe during pregnancy, ibuprofen, or Advil has NOT. As for aspirin, that's correct, it's a blood thinner.
1654058 tn?1407159066 Karen, Your platelets are already low, and NSAIDs can increase the risk for bleeding; imho, acetaminophen over the ibuprofen, hands down. With low platelets from tx and a compromised liver and kidney system, any of the NSAIDs are contra-indicated for you (includes Motrin, Advil, Aleve). Tylenol is not to be taken indiscriminately either, though. With cirrhosis, no more than 2000 mg per day max (that means no more than 4 Extra Strength Tylenol in any 24 hour period).
163305 tn?1333668571 I think I'd heed the warning if my child has asthma, however, I've used Tylenol as my go to fever reducer with my boys. I've never been able to get my boys to take ibuprofen. I tried the oral suspension as well as the chew tabs and neither of my children would take them as they taste horrible. Oh, I tried hiding the flavor but it didn't work verses Tylenol chewables, they just chew up and swallow, no problem. When they are sick . . . which one do you think I prefer?
3122657 tn?1357432602 Ibuprofen is bad for our livers. Try getting a massage if you can. Bromelian, a natural supplement made from pineapples helps reduce swelling but it takes time to work. Also, make sure you're drinking lots of water, and getting some exercise. Try some yoga too. Pot brownies worked the best for my back pain.
987762 tn?1671273328 Have you heard anywhere that acetaminophen or anti-fever meds will be effective against overheating except the overheating of fever.? If so, it doesn't make sense. Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen work to lower the production of certain cell products like cytokines and prostaglandins that are made by the body in infections. When their production drops the body stops raising the body's temp.
Avatar n tn An arthritis pain medicine may not work for other kind of pain. In general, ibuprofen and acetaminophen are two most common active ingredients in most readily available over-the-counter pain relievers. Neither of them is completely safe. From what I learned, if you have little or no liver damage, you can use either ibuprofen or acetaminophen. But if your liver damage is more advanced, acetaminophen is safer AS LONG AS YOU DON'T OVERDOSE IT OR MIX IT WITH ALCOHOL.
Avatar f tn I totally agree with specialmom. I have 3 kids and never had a high fever from teething (low fever, yes). I would think this is a sign of viral or other infection. I usually use acetaminophen for fever if that doesn't bring it down then I will alternated it with ibuprofen following the does age amounts and timing recommended.
Avatar m tn Any person who drinks alcohol regularly should not consume any acetaminophen. For patients with early cirrhosis (CPT class A or B), the use of acetaminophen is safe as long as the recommended dose is not exceeded (1,000 mg per dose, repeated no more often than every 6 hours). Patients with more advanced cirrhosis should take only ½ of the recommended dose. In fact, for patients with cirrhosis, acetaminophen, when used as described, is the preferred medication for the treatment of pain.
318582 tn?1248118551 If you consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day, ask your doctor whether you should take acetaminophen or other pain relievers/fever reducers. Acetaminophen may cause liver damage.
Avatar m tn You can take an OTC nimesulide preparation with acetaminophen as this keeps the fever down for a longer time. If you are allergic to nimesulide then you can continue ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Take a warm water bath as this helps bring down the fever. Sip plenty of fluids. Take a OTC decongestant for cough. If fever does not break in another day, consult your PCP. Yes, flu can affect the baby too. Though not dangerous, a more careful monitoring is required in babies.
729288 tn?1251254433 My nurse said that ibuprofen (advil) doesn't work for fevers and I should take acetaminophen (tylenol). I discovered she was right!
Avatar f tn Hi, been on interferon/ribavirin a bit over a week now. Minimal side effects thus far; counting my blessings. Have had a couple of headaches which is par for the course, which brings me to a question. Re headaches; the nurse tells me paracetomol is fine to deal with headaches and fever. However, I seem to recall the advice in the 90's for people with HCV was for them not to take products with paracetomol in them because they were hard on the liver.
1394601 tn?1328032308 You should not need oxycodone for the side affects of rebif. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen alone should quell any of the possibilities. Maybe you can split it somehow? If you injected at night after dinner take the ibuprof or tylenol and then keep your regularly scheduled day routine for pain? Just a thought. That's what I do. That way, if I do experience affects I can sleep through them. Being 7 months in your likely well adjusted by now.
7758733 tn?1402589420 Killer headaches, and never any Tylenol around. Ibuprofen can't be that bad huh? Got to go to work and this headache must go.
Avatar f tn You have a virus. It will pass. If your fever is high and it's been going on for awhile, see your doctor.
Business man2 mineral tablet (“A to Z” brand), - 1 raspberry keytone (sold by Walgreens), - 2 fish oil soft gels 1200mg (Walgreens brand) , - 2 ibuprofen (200mg each) usually, OR 2 acetaminophen (500mg each), OR 2 naproxen sodium (220mg each), OR 1 Rx meloxicam 15mg. (Pain killer taken for residual pain from knee being “scoped” 1/20/12) What is the doctor’s opinion?
Avatar f tn I have also been taking 800mg ibuprofen which helps for about 3 hours then the pain is back. It is not getting any better. The pain is almost unbearable. Any suggestions?
Avatar m tn over the years, I’ve found that most knowledgeable hepatologist/GI doctors will recommend Tylenol (acetaminophen) over other NSAID’s for minor pain relief. While acetaminophen is certainly hepatotoxic at large does, there is no evidence that it accumulates in the body; taken at recommended doses, it’s generally thought not only to be safe but preferable to NSAIDS.
6708370 tn?1471490210 Yep, good point Hawk I think a "little" acetaminophen is prob better - certainly for pain relief. Given that neither is very good for one's liver, I wonder how the Tylenol made it to the Tell Them to Take Tylenol list?
Avatar f tn My husband has no insurance and it is hard for him to go to the doctor...But he has een so sick for the past month, and I am scared. He has already had surgery this year for fluid build up in his stomache. He stays in painn, so can anyone help me please?
2105146 tn?1334593783 In small doses (less than 4 grams per day, or eight pills taken over a twenty-four hour period of time) acetaminophen is quite safe for the liver—unless combined with alcoholic beverages (see below). (Note: each acetaminophen tablet or pill typically contains 500 milligrams of acetaminophen.) In fact, acetaminophen is the recommended medication for relieving minor aches, pains, and headaches in people with liver disease.
