Avatar n tn The GGT test typically helps to detect liver and bile duct injury - such as the bile duct obstruction you've read about. While some doctors use it in all people they suspect of having liver disease, others use it only to help explain the cause of other changes or if they want to find out about 'alcohol use.' For example, both ALP and GGT are elevated in disease of the bile ducts and in some liver diseases, but only ALP will be elevated in bone disease.
Avatar f tn --- I have had High GGT a couple years ago and DR was not concerned. I had a couple beers the week of the test.. Should I be concerned this time?
Avatar n tn I recently had my bloods checked and everything is normal except a slightly high GGT of 78. All other liver tests were completely within the normal range. I was also checked for hepatitis and it was all clear. My cholestrol is also very low - with a reading of 4.2. I am slightly overweight and drink approximately three glasses of wine per night. I was concerned to see that the GGT level was a bit high, but my Dr. said that this elevation on its own is unlikely to indicate any type of disease.
Avatar n tn Hi, I was diagnosed with high GGT (226) AST in the 80's and ALT in the 70's in January of this year. I am a 54 yo woman and I was drinking an excessive amount of wine on weekends only for the past few years. I have now discontinued any alcohol, for over 2 months. My GGT only lowered to 154 and my ALT and AST are about the same or even a tiny bit higher. I had an ultrasound and the tech told me my results were so good I should go and "sign a donor card".
4309115 tn?1357606283 Gamma-glytamyl transpeptidase is an enzyme which is found in hepatocytes and biliary epithelial cells. GGT may be high in liver disease. In particular it is a feature of biliary outflow obstruction rather than hepatocellular damage. GGT (in men) = 11 - 50 i.u./l GGT (in women) = 7 - 32 i.u./l Note reference ranges may vary between laboratories. GGT serum measurement provides a very sensitive indicator of the presence or absence of hepatobiliary disease.
Avatar m tn 8 years ago I had a blood test and they found very High GGT. I have had Hepatitis test, Sonogram test of Liver and Bile ducts, and CT scan of Liver to check for Fatty liver, and all turned up negative. I barley drink (3 drinks per month) and I am now 55 years old, 6'-1", 205 pounds, do not really have much stomach fat, and in general good health and no symptoms... I have been to 2 Liver doctors and neither know what the cause of my High GGT... What do you think it could be??...
Avatar n tn • Congestive heart failure • Cholestasis (congestion of the bile ducts) • Cirrhosis • Hepatitis • Liver ischemia (blood flow deficiency) • Liver necrosis • Liver tumor • Use of hepatotoxic drugs (drugs toxic to liver) Hope this helps. Do consult a good urologist. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!" Avatar f tn However, the days prior to the exam I had had at most 1 beer - so lets say 4 beers that week. The results revealed that I had a high GGT (147) score. They denied me for insurance. They used a range of 0-45. I received the results about a week later and I had just returned from a business trip, I had two glasses of wine. After reading up on GGT I have learned that alcohol, even consumed earlier in the week can severely affect the test, as it is very sensitive.
Avatar n tn my doctor says there is nothing to worry about since all other results are normal. the high Gamma GGT result is due to the medication i am taking.
Avatar n tn From memory these are the same tests she asked me to do when I did the first set that came back with the high GGT. I DO NOT KNOW THE RESULTS OF MY SECOND GGT TEST and can't get hold of my doctor to ask. Does anyone know why she would be asking me to fast and do the same tests again minus the GGT test? I am worried about what she thinks is wrong...
Avatar m tn You may have hemachromatosis. Check your ferritin level.
Avatar m tn My high level of GGT after 6 months is what led the dr.s to send me for a biopsy. Like you I do not drink. don't do drugs ,smoke , If I were you I would be concerned, and get the tests done again ,also if they ask you to get a biopsy DO IT. Unfortunately it is to late for me to do anything , I have cryptogenic liver disease. So I am now on a waiting list for a liver transplant. I hope a second test will show it to lower.
Avatar f tn Dear All. Listen up. 1 year plus back my liver GGT is 600 plus. Now is normal at 36. If there's no other hidden reason, GGT can be brought down. Firstly, cut down all alcohol, food that are non natural. Herbs and supplements need liver to detox too FYI. Basically I cut down all salt, sugar. I stop herbs and supplements. I keep calendar and note what I eat. I ate organic and food that detox, example sweet potato, avocardo, pineapple, beetroot. Eat w moderation.
3165168 tn?1343857471 Both ALP and GGT are elevated in disease of the bile ducts and in some liver diseases, but only ALP will be elevated in bone disease. If the GGT level is normal in a person with a high ALP, the cause is most likely bone disease. The GGT test is sometimes used to help detect liver disease and bile duct obstructions. It is usually ordered in conjunction with or as follow up to other liver tests such as ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin.
Avatar m tn If the GGT level is normal in a person with a high ALP, the cause is most likely bone disease. GGT can also be used to screen for chronic alcohol abuse (it will be elevated in about 75% of chronic drinkers). A doctor usually orders GGT along with other tests to evaluate a person who has signs or symptoms that suggest liver disease. Some of the symptoms of liver injury include jaundice, nausea, vomiting, abdominal swelling, abdominal pain, pruritus (severe itching), and fatigue.
Avatar m tn The doctor is asking for another Liver Biopsy which I don’t know worth doing if we don’t know what causing GGT go up after several types of tests? GGT can be high for several reasons. It seems like I know more than my doctors now. They don’t really pay attention and carry on with their business. I wish I studied doctor rather than engineering. I am losing faith on these business minded doctors who don’t care or not even prepared when you go visit them.
Avatar m tn Hi all, I just got the lab test came back for my Life Insurance application and they rejected my application due to high level of ALT (60),AST(68) & GGT(198). Also, my triglycerides level is 148. My cholesterol/HDL ratio is 5.71 and my LDL/HDL Ratio is 3.96. I am a 152lbs,5.5", 53 yrs old Asian with a straight sex life style. Never do drugs/needles. Avatar m tn High iron in blood is seen in hereditary hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia, liver problems, dietary iron excess, and multiple blood transfusions. High GGT levels are seen in liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver tumors, and jaundice. Other cause of high GGT include heavy or chronic alcohol use, myocardial infarction, pancreatic cancer or pancreatitis, use of hepatotoxic drugs, and viral infections such as Reye's Syndrome, Epstein-Barr, or cytomegalovirus (CMV).
