Ibuprofen for dogs with arthritis

Common Questions and Answers about Ibuprofen for dogs with arthritis

ibuprofen

Avatar f tn NO! Dogs can't metabolize ibuprofen (advil). You can give him tylenol for a short time, but he will be much better off with an anti-inflammatory from your vet. I had two dogs that ended up with severe arthritis. The first took rimadyl daily for 5 of his 13.5 years due to hip displaysia. The last couple of years we switched to deramaxx when the symptoms got more severe. BIG difference with the deramaxx, but it's more expensive.
Avatar m tn So far in my experience, Deramax has been the best non-steroidal anti-inflammatory for pain in dogs - particularly for arthritis pain. Rimadyl is a close second and fairly cheap since it's been on the market for years. What kind of pain is your dog experiencing?
Avatar m tn Don't use Ibuprofen. Is it possible to get some aspirin? That's safer for dogs. Ibuprofen is toxic. I hope I haven't caught your question too late....
Avatar m tn In general, NSAIDS are NOT safe for dogs. Ibuprofen and acetopminophen will kill dogs and cats. Acetisalicylic aciid (regular plain aspirin) IS safe for dogs in the correct dose. Check with your vet to see what the appropriate dose would be for your dog based on his breed, age and general condition.
Avatar m tn I totally agree with Karla. Stop the Ibuprofen straight away. And a trip to the vet to get her arthritis managed is a good idea. Also, a Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplement might help her a lot. They certainly help my dog, I can vouch for that. She has been on them now for 2 years. She used to limp very slightly on a back leg which was once broken when she was younger.
Avatar n tn I was taking Ibuprofen for years and the pain in my knees was intollerable and I was confined to a wheel chair. About a year ago I started taking 1400 IU of Vitamin D and stopped the ibuprofen totally, my arthritis was doing MUCH better, even started taking short walks, however, recently, I had an injury and started taking Ibuprofen.....now my knees hurt all the time. Can Ibuprofen deplete vitamin D?
Avatar m tn ve had dogs on rimadyl for many years due to arthritis and they never had a problem with it. Tramadol was reserved for post-op pain treatment and only for a few days. Can you give us more information on exactly what kind of pain your chow chow has and any other meds that have been tried? I suspect the seizures while on tramadol may have been a coincidence, but without more information on your dog's case I could be completely wrong.
Avatar f tn Another night went by and this morning I, myelf, took the dogs for a walk and again, he was doing fine for a bit but moving slowly. AGAIN, he curled into a ball on the grass and as I started to pick him up he let out yelps and cries. I'm wanting to know if this could possibly be an injury from the other dogs being too playful, or perhaps arthritis?
Avatar m tn This is about my husband who has arthritis. He wakes up every morning with his right hand (entire) swollen and painful. Our internal med dr. said it was caused by arthritis.
Avatar n tn s effective and most dogs have no problem with it, he did have clients whose dogs ended up with bleeding ulcers. One dog nearly bled to death from his stomach after only two doses, so that's why he went completely against using it. An over-the-counter alternative is tylenol, but having used it on my own older dogs I found it to be ineffective. Check with your vet for proper dosage amounts if you decide to try it.
601219 tn?1220667343 I have a strong pain 6 to 7 inches from my ankle. Where the bone is. When i walk for a long time or run, the pain comes back. It's an odd feeling that i can't describe, but it hurt A LOT if i put little pressure after it begins to hurt. Could it be Arthritis? And yes i have been exposed to an OVERLOAD amount of time in cold environment, as in in my room where the air conditioner is on around 68 and i sleep with boxers on. Could it be from that?
Avatar n tn Yes, some dogs tend to hide their pain. Our Akita has arthritis and hid it for some time. I think you can get pet insurance or possibly care from the ASPCA to get treatment for your dog. I'm in Canada so I don't know what is used in the USA for dog arthritis but our dog took Adequan "injections" which stops the arthritis and can even reverse it. It worked great on her. She took Medicam for pain, when necessary. It's up to you and your vet what to give to your dog.
Avatar m tn But Advil contains Ibuprofen, and Ibuprofen is quite toxic for dogs. Even though he was OK on the dose you gave him, it's not worth the risk, as if he takes badly on it, the effects can be very bad kidney and liver damage, and can happen very quickly. Get something like RIMADYL (anti-inflammatory/painkiller) either from your vet, or if that is too expensive, from another reliable source.
Avatar n tn Dogs are more tolerant of tylenol than cats, it would take about 7 tylenol to cause toxicity in a medium-large dog, but even ONE Tylenol can be fatal for a cat! Regular aspirin is safe for dogs at the appropriate dosage for the size of the dog, and it should be given every 12 hours, not every four hours like for a person. It is also preferrable to use buffered aspirin or Ascriptin, the aspirin that is coated with Maalox. I can completely understand your anger at that stupid woman!
Avatar n tn I'm not sure about the molasses, but the dose for coconut oil (Organic) is 1 tsp. per 10lbs. Start with a low dose and work up to that... I know that molasses is used for it's Vitamin/Trace Mineral Content, but not sure about anti-inflammatory properties.... If your 14 yr. old is really suffering, your Vet should prescribe Medication for Arthrititis....These natural remedies (Listed above) take a few weeks to get in the system....Then the Vet meds. can be cut down...Good luck....
Avatar f tn has anyone had this treatment done on their dogs for prevention and maintenance of arthritis if so....... what do you think of the effectiveness of this treatment?.......... Just curious! by the way do not get this confused with nsaid carprofen they are totally different !!!!
Avatar n tn I have heard many different things about glucosamine for dogs . That is is okay for your dogs, and also that it isn't. There can be many benefits to providing supplements for your dog. It can help them remain healthy and with that even happier. No one likes to deal with a grumpy dog. Can you tell me where I could find more information about glucosamine for dogs though?
Avatar n tn I was prescribe Meloxicam and tynolol with codiene,is this a good combination for severe arthritis?
Avatar n tn Hi 7041949. :) First, I want to tell you that I'm so glad you found our PM (Pain Management) Forum here on MH ( MedHelp ). From what I have read the 15 mg's of Meloxicam is taken once a day, whereas the 800mg's of Ibuprofen is taken every 6 hrs OR as prescribed by your Doctor. From everything I've read those 2 doses seem to be the normal dosages given especially for arthritis. The 2 doses seem to be equal in effectiveness, depending on the person.
Avatar n tn I guess Vicoprofen is Ibuprofen? If so, NO! Don't give your dog Ibuprofen. It is toxic for dogs. Aspirin is safer, but only for very short periods, as it can have side effects. You need to get a veterinary pain killer, and if you are unsure as to the cause of your dog's pain, get that checked out so your dog can get the most suitable treatment for whatever's wrong.
Avatar f tn Yes, I believe it can. I had an appt this morning with an infectious disease Dr and we talked in great detail about parvo. In children, they can give them immuglobulin therapy if they have anemia with it. It can trigger an over response of the immune system. I would ask your Dr about it. Unfortunately there is no actual ************** for parvovirus... Just try to keep him comfortable as you can, give him some ibuprofen for the pain and some moist, warm heat on his joints.
Avatar f tn Hello Valerie......More than likely, this is old age Arthritis as the weather becomes cooler.....Just the same for humans..... Yes, a Vet visit is in order as they can prescribe the correct anti-inflammatories.....DO NOT to attempt to treat this w/OTC products......Ibuprofen is TOXIC to dogs & one dose of Aspirin can cause a Gastric bleed.....It is not worth the risk! Try to save up some money (Or borrow some if possible) to have your dog treated......
