Common Questions and Answers about Hysterectomy uterus or ovaries

hysterectomy

Avatar f tn I'm not certain what all you already know, or what you need to know, so here's my simple "hysterectomy lecture" for future readers. :-) The word "hysterectomy" actually refers only to removal of the uterus. The cervix is usually removed as well, and that entire procedure is called a total hysterectomy. There are two ways to do the surgery.
Avatar f tn I am ready to schedule a lap assisted vaginal hysterectomy due to fibroids and am okay with that but very undecided about whether to keep ovaries or have them removed. I am 47 years old. It is totally up to me whether they stay or go. Just trying to make the right decision for me. I keep going back and forth. Can I hear from anyone who has had a hysterectomy....what decision they made on the ovaries and how they are doing now?
Avatar f tn if your ovaries are healthy you should keep them! I too had a complete hysterectomy open abdomen, uterus, cervix and ovaries all taken...for me..it was a very bad decision... I did not gain weight either...but the hormone hell I was thrown into was life altering even though my ovaries were disease ridden with endometriosis they worked MUCH better then any patch can...and they did it for free where now I have to pay for what my body did for free..and they do not work that great...
Avatar m tn Normally a partial hysterectomy is removing the uterus but leaving the ovaries for hormonal purposes. There is no way someone without a uterus could get pregnant. But have her check with her doctor.
Avatar m tn so my friend's mother has a benign tumor in the uterus and she's confused between choosing to completely remove the uterus or just the tumor and i don't know what is the type of the tumor or how much it has invaded ..can you help?
Avatar n tn By "partial hysterectomy" are you saying your uterus is removed but not your ovaries? The definition of menopause is that your periods are gone and have been gone for a year. But if your uterus is removed, you would not have periods. But I think that what you are asking is whether your ovaries will stop functioning and stop making estrogen and whatever else and you will begin to have menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and dry skin.
Avatar n tn They can remove only the uterus and leave the ovaries, they can remove the ovaries and leave the uterus, or they can leave the uterus and remove only one ovary and tube and leave the other side.
Avatar n tn Some doctors call a hysterectomy just removal of the uterus. For my full debulking hysterectomy I had my uterus, cervix, both ovaries, both fallopian tubes and full omentum apron and my appendix... Did you have your ovaries removed? If you did you could have remnant ovarie tissue that has cysts.. you need to ask more questions... I hope you find the answers...
Avatar f tn In your shoes (and this really is just my thoughts, not any kind of strong recommendation) I would go ahead and take the uterus if the ovaries are going. If the issue were reversed, I would resist losing the ovaries just because the uterus had to go, but that is because the ovaries are producing hormones (in my belief, even a little hormone trail after menopause). But if my ovaries were going, I wouldn't care much about keeping the uterus.
804498 tn?1238100998 I agree with the above poster. If you've had a full hysterectomy, removal of uterus and ovaries, there is no way you can get pregnant and deliver a baby.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had there ovaries removed with there hysterectomy? If so, how do you feel emotionally with menopause and do you know how long menopause lasts?
Avatar n tn I know this is responding to an old post, but I noticed someone said no PMS symptoms after hysterectomy. That is not true at all. Although the symptoms are very different. If one still has two functioning ovaries you will still face the (EMOTIONS, CRAVINGS, HEADACHES, SORE BOOBS ETC). I had a hysterectomy a bit over 6 months ago. For the first 3 months after the hysterectomy I was fine (but I didn't realize my ovaries had been asleep I guess). Oh did they wake up!!
Avatar n tn I have a fibroid about the size of a grapefruit on my uterus and at least 2 smaller ones. My doctor was going to try the procedure wherein they go in and cut off the blood supply to the fibroid when she thought it was just one. Now that she has learned through an ultrasound that there are multiple fibroids, she said that procedure is not an option as it would basically cut off the blood supply to the uterus if they did that for each fibroid.
Avatar n tn Depends on the reason for a hysterectomy. The ovaries are usually left because it delays menopause but if cancer is involved then ovaries will also be removed.
Avatar f tn What in your opinion would be my next course of action? Should I go ahead and have the tubes and ovaries removed or just the tubes or nothing at all and deal with the pain and pressure for years until menopause??
Avatar n tn A 'partial hysterectomy' usually refers to removing the uterus and not the ovaries. Is that what you had? It takes a uterus to carry a baby. [If you still have your ovaries, your eggs and your husband's sperm could be used to create an embryo by in-vitro fertilization, which could be carried by a gestational carrier ("surrogate mother") to term for you.
Avatar f tn There is no such thing as an artificial uterus implant. There any such thing as an artificial uterus. By complete hysterectomy, I take it you also mean your ovaries are gone. Losing the ovaries and the uterus pretty much takes away IVF with someone else's eggs (because you have no uterus) and IVF from you to surrogate (because you have no ovaries).
Avatar n tn It feels like I am going to have a period ,but that is not possible.I still have my ovaries,I had the surgery and had my uterus removed a year ago.but I kept my ovaries.I have also been dealing with indometriosis for years.I hate having sex it is so painful, what can I do?
Avatar f tn ) The dr wants to me to have a hysterectomy and also remove my ovaries, not sure about the cervix. I only want the fibroids removed from my uterus. He says that because of my age I do not need my uterus and for cancer prevention I should have it removed as well as my ovaries. My husband and I have an amazing sex life and I do not want the jeopordized because of the removal of my ovaries. That really scares me.
Avatar f tn We need all our organs our whole life just as men do (uterus, ovaries, tubes). The ovaries do not shut down at menopause and continue producing hormones into our 80's if they have not been "crippled" by a gyn procedure such as hysterectomy, tubal sterilization, or ablation. Medical studies show many increased health risks associated with ovary removal. If you care to share, what is the reason for the hysterectomy?
Avatar n tn No you cannot get pregnant after a hysterectomy. You have to have a uterus to carry a baby and a hysterectomy removes the uterus. There are other pricedures that remove just the ovaries that you can get pregnant after but not a hysterectomy.
Avatar f tn s really doubtful a hysterectomy would help me. If it had helped I could have kept taking it or have a hysterectomy to make it permanent. By having a hysterectomy your basically putting yourself in menopause. If you try a menopause mimicking drug and it works then I'd strongly consider a hysterectomy but if it doesn't work then a hysterectomy probably won't help.
