Hysterectomy keep the ovaries

Common Questions and Answers about Hysterectomy keep the ovaries

hysterectomy

Avatar f tn I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy soon. The doctor wants to take my ovaries. My mom and both of her sisters have had hysterectomy's. My mother and 1 aunt had early onset of Alzheimers. both took premarin. I have read and studied that HRT's like premarin have a high risk of dementia and heart disease? since my dad had heart disease and most of his siblings and family have had heart problems I am worried. I have Endometrosis and also prolapsed Uteris.
Avatar f tn Would you keep or remove your ovaries when having a hysterectomy? I'm coming to the end of menopause.
Avatar n tn Depends on the reason for a hysterectomy. The ovaries are usually left because it delays menopause but if cancer is involved then ovaries will also be removed.
Avatar n tn My sister agreed with you about the usefulness of the ovaries. Her take was the 10% functional ovaries still prevent heart palpitations, which she now has because she has no ovaries. She can't stop HRT because when she does she has heart palpitations. She had hers removed at 50 before she was finished with menopause and regrest the loss. Since heart disease is a major cause of death in women, the heart palpitations could be a major problem.
Avatar f tn you will have hormones (most likely many times when uterus is removed it screw hormones up) the down side if you keep you ovaries and shoule ever develpo ovarian cancer it would likely be a death sentance as its already so vey hard to detect.post hysterectomy its that much harder,,,,,you are 47 your gonna be menopasual soon anyways Id let them take them out if it was me..which was the decision i made Im 46 I now use estrogen replacement a vivelle dot patch very easy and accurate..
Avatar f tn Hi there, I got my ovaries removed with the hysterectomy as well as my appendix. I am 45 and had the surgery Oct 15th. I was pretty miserable emotionally, but saw the Nurse practitioner today at my gyn/oncs office and she started me on estrogen. I have been kinda emotional and down for the last 2 weeks which she said is absolutely normal with the surgical menopause. I am so looking foward to feeling like my own self. I didn't have a choice of having my ovaries removed.
285896 tn?1237211227 Err---I didn't mean TOTAL hysterectomy. I was referring to the partial (leaving the ovaries) so you don't have to take hormone replacement meds.
Avatar n tn Your ovaries provide hormones that keep you in the reproductive stage of your life. When the ovaries slow down or stop functioning (as in a total hysterectomy) then you go into menopause. I am in menopause and dealing with hot flashes daily. My sister had chemo and radiation for breast cancer. Chemo targets fast growing cells which includes cancer cells, ovaries, and hair (which explains why you go bald). She is now in full blown menopause.
Avatar f tn The recommendation is that the ovaries and tubes be removed and I have the option to have a full hysterectomy as well (biopsy showed nothing). 7 years ago I had a cyst removed from one breast that showed atypical hyperplasia in the breast ducts. I took Tamoxifen for a year, then had a 'period' which lead to a pelvic ultrasound, leading to the ovary surgery.
Avatar n tn Our bodies will make estrogen from the fat in our bodies if the ovaries are not there.. or are not producing enough to meet the demands our body requires. There are over 400 bodily functions that require estrogen. When not produced by the ovaries, estrogen is a produced by fat. And, when this is happening it is called "Estrone." That's why Estrone is called 'the Menopause Estrogen.
Avatar f tn My surgeon is a specialist in endo, so should I trust her? she wants to keep both ovaries but remove the uterus. if i keep ovaries wont i keep ovulating and it keep hurting? she said my tubes are clogged up with old blood too which is what might be causing alot of the pain. maybe i should just have my cysts removed?
Avatar n tn Fibroids and polyps are almost always benign (~99%) so hysterectomy would be overkill. And hysterectomy causes lifelong harm. I call it the surgery that keeps on giving... problem after problem... even if the ovaries are "preserved." Intercourse or pelvic exams can cause polyps to bleed. And if they aren't removed at the base, they can recur and cause heavy bleeding. What were the reasons for the D&C's - as part of the polyp removal or was your lining too thick?
Avatar f tn They have likely atrophied due to your hysterectomy and loss of blood flow and feedback loop with the uterus. The ovaries naturally shrink after menopause but they continue to produce hormones at least until age 80 in women who have all their parts. These hormones are essential to every aspect of health. Do a web search for "pubmed bilateral oophorectomy long term health" to understand the many repercussions / adverse effects of having ovaries (part of the endocrine system) removed.
Avatar f tn ) The dr wants to me to have a hysterectomy and also remove my ovaries, not sure about the cervix. I only want the fibroids removed from my uterus. He says that because of my age I do not need my uterus and for cancer prevention I should have it removed as well as my ovaries. My husband and I have an amazing sex life and I do not want the jeopordized because of the removal of my ovaries. That really scares me.
Avatar f tn My personal experience with having one done at the age of 41 was the best decision I ever made....I had the full hysterectomy so I was put on the patch the after the hysterectomy. I will say that the remaining ovary I had prior to the surgery was no longer alive... I had it done laparoscopic. I went in at 7:30am and home by 12 noon. I was originally going back to work after 1 week, however, I went back after 2 due to my son being in an accident (he needed help, broke his pelvis). .
Avatar m tn first the hysterectomy with ovaries removed...for endometriosis...which it DID NOT cure! then I had the other surgeries...thanks to endo and taking out my organs...my pelvic floor structure is so weak...and I am now 8 abdominal/pelvic floor surgeries in...I am happy with my Robotic-assisted laparoscopic mesh sacrocolpopexy...but not the hysterectomy or the vaginal suture repairs...if I could have a do over...I would have NEVER agreed to let them take my female organs...
Avatar f tn I'm having a TAH they're leaving the ovaries. I'm scared to death!! Please someone tell me something good about this so I can relax and not go screaming out of the pre op? Lol thank you!!
Avatar f tn I had several laps to ease the pain but it always came back... At 36 I had my uterus removed but kept the ovaries. I wanted it all gone but my Dr would not do it, said I was too young. Exactly 2 yrs later, after a possible OVCA scare (it was benign, thank goodness!) I had to have my ovaries removed. The 2 yrs between surgeries was AWEFUL!!!!! So much pain!!!! I tried everything to ease the pain, even Lupron shots (which I hated!!!
Avatar f tn Although many assume or are led to believe that the ovaries continue functioning normally after a partial hysterectomy, that is not always the case. Once the uterus is removed, there is a risk that the ovaries will produce fewer hormones. It is even possible for them to completely shut down causing a surgical type menopause.
1819252 tn?1317092002 peri-menopause (premenopause), menopause, and post-menopause. Hormone replacement is the answer to these problems. Bio-identical hormone therapy (BHT) and adding oestrogenic foods such as tofu, legumes may also help. The answer is based on information provided. Exact advice is not possible without a proper examination and investigations. You are requested to consult your Doctor. Take care and keep us posted.
489228 tn?1291531454 osteoporosis, it makes us age to about 50-55 year old. If there is no need to remove the ovaries (no disease) keep the ovaries so that you can avoid issues in the future, specially if you have a family history of these conditions such as in my case. Both sides of my parents, I have heart disease & osteoporosis, besides I’ve had Lupron treatment twice already.
Avatar n tn For one thing, if you are going to lose your ovaries during this hysterectomy (called a complete or Radical hysterectomy) then you are losing a source of estrogen and testosterone. Your ovaries will continue to 'drip' some estrogen.. estradiol... until you are about 75 or 80. Your ovaries will also continue to drip some testosterone until you are about age 75. Of course, you won't get much in the way of these hormones but you get some.
Avatar f tn So now my doctor Says we can do a partial hysterectomy, removing the cervix and uterus and the tubes but leaving the ovaries. I have no history of any cancer is in my family. Says we can do a partial hysterectomy, removing the cervix and uterus and the tubes but leaving the ovaries. I have no history of any cancer is in my family. My doctor did not say anything about an organ prolapse for any long-term potential risks.
