Hysterectomy for heavy menstrual bleeding

Common Questions and Answers about Hysterectomy for heavy menstrual bleeding

hysterectomy

Avatar f tn I have had heavy menstrual bleeding for almost a year now, and have scheduled to have a hysterectomy in Jan. The bleeding is getting worse, heavier, lots of big clots, and I am soaking an overnight pad every hour. Is there anything I can do, possible go on birth control or some kind of medication to stop the bleeding, or at least slow it down? I know surgery is only 1 month away, so do I just need to tough it out, or are there other options? Thanks!
Avatar n tn If bleeding after hysterectomy is as heavy as a menstrual period or lasts longer than six weeks then it needs evaluation. Pelvic cramps can be due to healing of stitches but if there is severe pain or any fever then any infection or adhesion formation should be ruled out. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor.
1615999 tn?1307461942 How heavy is too heavy when it comes to menstrual bleeding? My doctors always say if I saturate a pad in an hour then I should be seen right away. Well today I just about saturated one in about 2 hours and I don't know if that is an issue or not. I had an u/s a couple weeks ago because of heavy bleeding and they noticed that my uterine lining was thicker than it should be since I had just finished my period a couple days before.
Avatar n tn I had a uterine ablation on 11/24 for heavy periods and mid month sporadic bleeding. Since then, I have had two menstrual periods, not super heavy but not light either. Also, I never used to have menstrual cramps and now the first two days, they are borderline unbearable. And, now I am really depressed because I started mid-month spotting again.
Avatar f tn After that 60 days I started spotting for 6 days then had 2 weeks of very heavy bleeding (almost 3 weeks all together). This ended on April 4th & then after only 8 days with no period I got another one with light bleeding for about a week & then very heavy bleeding again ever since. The only break I've had is 6 days when I took the Sprintec birth control but I had a bad reaction with nausea & a crazy feeling in my head along with dizzyness.
Avatar f tn i.ve been having heay meastrual bleeding now for a couple of years. When my cycle comes on it last 3 - 4 months nonstop. Now that im geting married i would love to conceive, but need some type of help from a doctor to know whats going on. can someone out ther help me?
Avatar n tn I had heavy bleeding with my periods so I opted for the endometrial ablation instead of a hysterectomy. My ablation was unsuccessful and now to make matters worse, I have severe menstrual cramping. I take ibprofen every few hours and it does nothing to relieve the pain. I am sick and tired of being miserable every month. Do you know why my cramping is even more severe now and do you have any suggestions to relieve them? Could it be a hormonal thing?
953787 tn?1246371213 However, they are clinically apparent in up to 25% of women and cause significant morbidity, including prolonged or heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure or pain, and, in rare cases, reproductive dysfunction. Both the economic cost and the effect of fibroids on quality of life are substantial. Fibroids are not cancerous. Drugs that manipulate the levels of steroid hormones are effective in treating fibroids but side-effects limit their long-term use.
Avatar m tn Fibroids shrink after menopause and of course bleeding does too. Hysterectomy trades this temporary problem for a whole new set of permanent problems. You can eat foods high in iron or take iron supplements to increase your iron levels. Taking iron with vitamin C will enhance absorption. If the bleeding is too bothersome, try using a menstrual cup which holds quite a bit more than a tampon or pad.
Avatar f tn I have since learned more than I ever cared to know about how vital the uterus and ovaries are to every aspect of health and well-being. I also learned that most women are misled about their need for hysterectomy as well as the many short and long-term after effects. I will be happy to share more if you'd like. I hope this helps and please keep us posted on what more you find out.
Avatar f tn Hi Cherie762, I got my results back and the tissue is benign! Ya! So that is great news. Now he has started me on Medroxypr AC (progesterone) 10mg x 12 days a month. I talked to him on the phone so the conversation was short. He told me to try it for a couple of months to see if it decreases my bleeding. So now I have been researching it online (which isn't always the best idea!) and I am reading a lot of side effects such as heavy bleeding and discomfort.
Avatar f tn Hi I just stumbled on this site after googling my symptoms. I had a vaginal hysterectomy two years ago due to extremely heavy bleeding, FLOODING! I kept my ovaries. I healed well and felt good for awhile but for the last month I have been experiencing back pain and abdominal pain mostly on my left side. This is exactly how I felt when I would have bad menstrual cramps. But I don't know why I'm having these pains now. I am seeing my gyno.
Avatar f tn Hello, It can be due to menometrorrhagia. Prolonged and abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding is called menorrhagia. This condition is called menorrhagia. Normally the period stays for 3-7 days and comes in 21 to 35 days. However sometimes normal periods can be irregular. The causes of menorrhagia could be due to bleeding disorders, vitamin K deficiency, excess usage of aspirin, hormonal imbalance, stress, fibroids, recent intra uterine devices (like copper-T)etc.

Avatar f tn I have been bleeding NON-STOP for almost 40 days now! It isn't very heavy, but sometimes, when I'm moving or just sitting, it suddenly gushes and produces large clots. I'm not having "typical" period pains, but I have very sore hips - I don't know if this is connected though.
1582332 tn?1296924865 ended up having a hysterectomy in 2011. When I went in for surgery, I had been bleeding for over 16 days straight. I still have my ovaries though. But to think that all if this could very well be connected is beyond aggravating. I can't wait to get in to see my doctor,4 hr trip, but I am willing to travel wherever I have to...hurry up out if network referral :-( I've been suffering for over 18 years & someone if finally listening to me....
482924 tn?1333203671 Dear friends, I have been suffering from prolonged and heavy bleeding during menstrual periods which sometimes continues for 15 days or more. The doctor had performed a D&C and found that I have atypical hyperplasia of endometrium. After that I was on Tab Regesterone 5mg from last October to April. After that from July the heavy bleeding has again started. So the doctor has prescribed same medicine for me.
Avatar n tn please tell me why my periods are so painful and heavy now after my procedure? The literally make me sick and nauseous .
10123610 tn?1408029225 I am 46 and have been having issues with HEAVY menstrual cycles and bleeding between cycles. I am wondering if I should just opt for the hysterectomy instead. Since I do not know much about ablation I have been trying to find out which option would be better.
Avatar n tn I finished my period a week ago, and i then started to beleed very heavily again (going through a pad every two hours even during the night) it doesnt hurt and it is comletely odourless (unlike menstrual blood), i have not had sex imbetwenn the bleeding. I had endometriosis removed three months ago. The bleeding is constant and hasn't got lighter. I feel fine but am concerned about the loss of blood. Is it possible that i am menstruating again??
Avatar f tn Hi there. Welcome to the group! I'll check more often if you are visiting to chat!! I have been there done that with the menopause process. Let me just say this, it was NOT how I imagined and I found out later, I had kind of a common pattern. I did start with some abnormal cycles. Not in that they were spaced out weird, I actually was more on time than ever . . . but that it was significant bleeding. Like call an ambulance, I'm not going to make it bleeding.
Avatar n tn -not ovulating and therefore having excess estrogen and not enough progesterone -other hormonal imbalances such as thyroid or an excess of the milk hormone, prolactin -fibroids which cause heavier periods but not bleeding in between periods -benign polyps of the cervix and uterus -cervical or vaginal cancer -endometrial cancer -a bleeding disorder either from taking an anticoagulant like warfarin or due to illness such as leukemia the work up includes pelvic exam pap smear endometrial biopsy p
Avatar f tn My main problem is the extremely heavy bleeding. To the point I have had to go to the emergency room from blood loss. My monthlies are lasting 20+ days that are very heavy. I usually have to lay in bed with my feet elevated and an ice pack on my abdomen just to try to control it. Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried acupuncture for endometriosis. If so, did it help? I found a place close to where I live stating they can improve the symptoms and it would cost $120.
Avatar f tn Even one of my friend is suffering with the similar type of issue she is having breast cancer and her menstrual cycle is very irregular like she has periods twice in six months and when it comes she has to face heavy bleeding with menstrual cramps. Some how with the use of menstrual cups she manages the bleeding but the pain and other problems she faces during this is unbearable.Check here for more information about menstruation at http://www.cupissima.com .
Avatar n tn I am having heavy menstral bleeding, I usually go through a box of tampons in one or two days. Can an endometrial ablation be a good solution for me?
