Hysterectomy discharge

Common Questions and Answers about Hysterectomy discharge

Hello, after a hysterectomy, you will experience some vaginal bleeding and discharge. This will be less discharge than during a period, but it may last up to six weeks. If it persists beyond that then it needs evaluation and any abnormality of cervix needs to be ruled out. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor.
I am doing research for my sister who had a hysterectomy many years ago. She does still have her ovaries, and has started to vaginally pass bloody discharge. what can cause this. I thought there was no longer a connection.
It is not abnormal to have some discharge after a total hysterectomy. Sometimes this discharge can increase if you are doing too much- such as lifting things. Since you have already made your doctor aware, then I would try and take it easy and continue to rest. The recovery time for a total hysterectomy is usually 6-8 weeks. If the bleeding gets heavy or you have any other concerns do not hesitate to contact your doctor. Good Luck and hope you feel better soon.

I soak the tampon and the pad within 30 minutes, hopefully I feel the overflow beginning before I spill out onto my pad or underwear. A partial hysterectomy was advised by my doctor to allevite all of this mess. after reading some of these posts, I am fearful that I will still bleed and have problems.
Besides the fact that it feels gross, and the area where the discharge is present is red, swollen and itchy, the discharge substance itself has a very malodorous smell to it. It's really gross. I always immediately wash the affected area with warm soapy water and dry it thoroughly, then I apply triple antibiotic ointment. The redness, swelling and itchiness are gone within an hour of doing this and it doesn't reappear for a few days to a week or more.
Hi Welcome to the MedHelp forum! Pinkish or reddish vaginal discharge in a case of hysterectomy could be due to hypothyroidism, cervical dysplasia, cervical polyps, cervicitis (infection/inflammation of cervix), vaginitis (infection/inflammation of vagina), cervical cancer, hormonal imbalance as in polycystic disease of the ovary, use of blood thinners, genital ulcers, STDs and stress. I would strongly recommend you to consult a gynecologist. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage.

I suffer from endometriosis due to complications I can not have a hysterectomy. Last night when I went to the toilet for a wee I passed a dark brown clot about three inches big. I am on my period but it was not a period clot. I passed a smaller one about a week or so ago. Do you have any idea what this could be?
No fever, no further discharge, what is cause of this discharge. Waiting to see if cyst and pain comes back with next cycle.

Whilst I have not had a hysterectomy, I have abdominal pain, irregular bleeding and green 'snot like' discharge. There is no odour to it either. I have recently been for a colposcopy, I have cervical ectopy, mild cervical prolapse and abnormal cells......awaiting results from biopsy. ( I had a smear test which came back normal!) I'm 26 years old and have been told cervical prolapse is pretty unusual at my age. It tends to happen to ladies of your mothers age.

Seven weeks ago they discovered a syst of 14 x 10 x5 on my one remaining ovary. I had total abdominal hysterectomy as well as ovarectomy and some kind of sack removed as well. My CA 125 was positive. I had a partial hysterectomy (uterus and cervix) in July and returned to the doctor 3 weeks later for recheck and complaint of green discharge, continuous since surgery. The doctor at that time told me this was normal and to return if it continued. 2 weeks later I returned because the amount of green discharge had increased, accompanied by a fever of 100 degrees and become worrisome. They ran blood work at the time and said my white count was 26,000, but was, again, nothing to worry about.
When I first started on the Tamoxifen my periods stopped for about 6 months and then started again about once every 3 or 4 months with the last one being quite heavy. I have also had some vaginal discharge clear to yellowish in color with some smell - no itching or pain. My gynecologist is recommending that I get a total abdominal hysterectomy since I am still having periods. I had a D&C last year and had a benign polyp removed.
My sister had a hysterectomy 20-25 years ago, and today she has had three separate incidents of "gushing" a brown vaginal discharge. There's no pain or discomfort, and the discharge does not smell. Any input/advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Patty, I transfered this the moment I realised you had beat stage 5 ovarian cancer, these ladies know what symptoms to watch for better than I, my hunch is this is not related to the hysterectomy. any vaginal discharge( for non mensturating ladies) that is not clear is a symptom......you need to report this to your dr asap. good luck and I hope the ladies here can give you even more advice.
since then i have had abdominal cramps, brownish vaginal discharge, nausea, extreme hunger. I've also have had an increase in facial hair.
I recently had a robot assisted hysterectomy & prolapsed bladder surgery. hysterectomy was performed vaginaly and bladder surgery though laparoscopy. I am doing well except for constipation. is anyone having this problem?
I have been having yellow discharge post abdominal hysterectomy for nearly 8 weeks now. It doesn't smell but it's enough to have to wear a panty liner every day. is this normal?
