Hysterectomy and estrogen replacement

Common Questions and Answers about Hysterectomy and estrogen replacement

hysterectomy

Avatar n tn Has anyone experienced highly elevated FSH many years after "total hysterectomy" and no hormone replacement therapy?
Avatar n tn A critical issue here is the duration of your replacement therapy - among older women, it is known that estrogen replacement being given for menopause increases the risk of getting breast cancer. It would not be accurate to use their data for someone your age. In general, a period of 3 years at the most of estrogen replacement therapy is estimated to balance the risks of cancer and the control of menopausal symptoms.
Avatar f tn Cysts are quite common and often occur with hormonal variation (including menstruation and hormone replacement therapy). Of course, lumpy breast tissue can also swell as a result of hormonal variation. If you are concerned, you should see your doctor for evaluation and he/she can order an ultrasound, if appropriate. Also, just so you are aware, “natural” hormone replacement has the same risks of estrogen exposure as “clinical” HRT. Estrogen is estrogen, whether it is from soy or the lab.
Avatar f tn I am now on estrogen replacement, bioidentical estrogen and Im sooooo much better. It takes alittle while to tweak the dose but it is so much better. Fat cells do produce estrogen, but it is not the most effective estrogen so I would say you need some replacement. I hope this helps. We have all been through this.
Avatar m tn I am thinking about having a hysterectomy because of terrible endemetriosis, I am 47 and have a history of breast cancer, so I cannot get any hormone replacement therapy. But i have read that maybe it won't help. Does anyone have any thoughts?
Avatar f tn One of the benefits of soy is that it breaks down to a type of estrogen substitute. I have never taken estrogen replacement and my levels have always been great. Try a few soy products (ice cream, appetizers, supplements) and see if you feel better. Also, have you MD test your glucose levels. Both higher and lower levels will make you sweat!!
Avatar f tn I had a hysterctomy almost 3 years ago at the age of 35 for a borderline serous tumor. My oncologist put me on an estrogen replacement patch and I have been using them ever since. With all the stuff in the news lately about HRT and their new findings, I would love to know your opinion. Are these studies only on women who have gone through natural menopause or do they also include women who were put into surgical menopause at a young age?
Avatar f tn I am 1 week post op Laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. I can’t sleep and when I do finally fall asleep, I have horrible, vivid nightmares. Is this normal? Does it last long?
Avatar n tn The estrogen is coming from your endocrine systom. Are you taking any hormone replacement therapy? It sounds like your estrogen dominate and may need to add testosterone. This is something you need to talk to your Dr about. He'/she can give you options as far as HRT . Have you had your thyroid checked? It sounds like you could possibly be having symptoms of low thyroid too. Keep us up to date on how your doing and take care.
Avatar m tn Hot flashes, wakeful nights and mood swings, probably. If you aren't having those, you probably don't need hormones. Your doctor should be able to advise you.
Avatar f tn I was so extremely apprehensive about the estrogen replacement but my doctor assured me many times that I would do well on it and that it was fine for me. I am so scared that maybe I made a bad choice. I wonder could I cause myself to have a recurrence because of the HRT or even cause ovarian cancer because of it? Also, should I ask my doctor to have it tested? Are there certain types of borderline tumors that would test positive for this?
Avatar n tn Should a woman who has had her uterus and cervix removed (ovaries are left) take any HRT for hot flashes? It has been 10 years since my hysterectomy and the hot flashes have just begun. I was 42 at the time of the hysterectomy I am now 53.
Avatar f tn Because I had my ovaries removed and am young, my oncologist has me on estrogen only replacement. With all the new information in the news now I don't know what to think. The thing is, these studies are on post menopausal women. I can see where taking a replacement hormone when your body should naturally not be making this hormone anymore could be bad and I wouldn't do it.
Avatar f tn Hello, After hysterectomy, hormone replacement therapy would consist of estrogen alone usually given daily by pill or sometimes weekly or biweekly skin patch. However hormonal replacement therapy should be given for a short time only as long term use may be associated with a small increase in breast cancer. In my opinion you should consult a gynecologist and start with hormone replacemenr therapy.
Avatar f tn ve also had a hysterectomy in 1997 and was on replacement therapy for 15 years. 2 and 4 years later I was suffering the same pain and the doctor did a laporoscope both times. Afterward I felt better. But the replacement therapy I was on (estrogen) was causing it to continue to grow. My Dr. said there is no way of absolutely getting all of the endo when they do a hysterectomy and then being on the estrogen, what was left was still growing. So I stopped taking the estrogen and it got better.
Avatar n tn I used folic acid and black cohosh for my symptoms. I really only had hot flashes and night sweats and using folic acid and black cohosh seemed to lessen the frequency and severity for me. This combination doesn't work for everybody. Check with your doctor before taking these supplements because they can intefer with some prescription medicines...especially for thyroid problems.
Avatar f tn There are many hormone options from contraceptives to hormone "replacement." Since estrogen feeds endo, it is thought that a progestin or progesterone should be taken along with any estrogen to attempt to keep the endo from growing.
Avatar f tn Are you on a hormonal replacement therapy? Some women experience tenderness and swelling when you are taking hormones. Tender and sometimes swollen breasts may also be due to water retention caused by estrogen dominance. After hysterectomy, you may have estrogen dominance even with low estogen levels due to a lack of progesterone. Maybe you should talk to your ob/gyn.
Avatar f tn I am going to have a total laparoscopic hysterectomy (uterus and ovaries) in about 2 weeks. 1) How long will I spend in the hospital? 2) What are the tricky tasks around the house that I might do out of habit, but really shouldn't? I'm guessing laundry and loading/unloading dishwasher...what else? 3) How soon after surgery do women start on hormone replacement? Thank you!
Avatar f tn Hello, After hysterectomy, hormone replacement therapy should be given which would consist of estrogen alone usually given daily by pill or sometimes weekly or biweekly skin patch. However hormonal replacement therapy should be given for a short time only as long term use may be associated with a small increase in breast cancer.Family history and the individual’s medical history are to be taken into account while prescribing hormone replacement therapy.
Avatar f tn Endometriosis can complicate matters because all of the endo is seldom removed at the time of hysterectomy and can itself produce estrogen. So it is possible that it was helping to keep you supplied with estrogen but is no longer. Have you checked your estrogen levels periodically since your surgery? However, unfortunately, we cannot always go by levels.
Avatar f tn Since you had such severe endo, I wonder if it has been growing due to the estrogen replacement. I too had stage 4 endo amongst other things and my doc wanted to wait 6 monts before giving me the hormone replacement, but I was such a MESS, I started them after 2 weeks. How long did you wait before starting the estrogen?
Avatar f tn I was suppose to go for exporitory surgery for the mass that was found on my right ovary but they found it to be cancer and opted, with my consent, to do a total hysterectomy. My doctor, who is a OB/GYN, preformed the surgery and after placed me on Premarin. I was worried after finding out all the health issues around premerin, especially the blood clots, since my mom died of that several years after her hysterectomy.
Avatar n tn I had a total hysterectomy 4 years ago only leaving the cervic behind. 7 months ago I started having hot flashes which have become almost unbearable now. One of the hot flashes lasted in excess of 3 hours and left me completely drained of energy. For the past 5 months I have been on a tablet Angeliq and although the hot flashes are less, they still occur at the most inconvenient times.
Avatar f tn FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone, androgens and prolactin. If they are found to be in menopausal levels then, hormone replacement therapy will help a lot. Even if the ovaries are not removed, post hysterectomy many women suffer from such symptoms. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps.
