hypoglycemia

Avatar n tn The Doctor explained that this was common with women my age (25) and it was nothing to worry about but now I keep have re-occuring episodes were I will wake up in the middle of the night and I will be soaked with sweat and shaking and needing to have something sugary straight away. It leaves me feeling confused, concerned and feeling really groggy for the rest of the day.
Avatar n tn My girlfriend just got out of the hospital today after being in DKA, while waiting to be discharged, the doctors asked her if she would like to participate in a trial that would give her a new type of insulin which would help regulate her sugar especially in the morning. Does anyone know what new insulin trials are going on right now, and what the name of it was??
Avatar n tn When in DKA, you are insulin resistant. So in a way, yes you are rejecting insulin. You're Dr. will help you manage that situation, you should always call your Dr immediate when you discover keytones in your urine. If they are not available it's best to go to the emergency. It's a serious condition and should be treated as such.
Avatar n tn Near complete deficiency of insulin and elevated levels of certain stress hormones combine to cause DKA. DKA is more common among Type I diabetics, but may also occur in Type II diabetics generally when physiologically stressed, such as during an infection. Patients with new, undiagnosed Type I diabetes frequently present to hospitals with DKA. DKA can also occur in a known diabetic who fails to take prescribed insulin.
961466 tn?1247550382 Sounds like she needs to see a doctor right away, or be taken to an Emergency Room. Are her blood sugars extremely high? If so she might be experiencing DKA and needs to go to the ER right away.
Avatar n tn No one dose of medication works for everyone, and when in trouble, no one set response to DKA will help everyone equally. I have just been corresponding with a young woman whose fiance thought he had the flu for several days just like your daughter, and then he went into a coma. He turned out to be an undiagnosed diabetic and when the young woman last wrote, he had been comatose for 14 days and kidneys were failing.
Avatar n tn Hi am a mother of a 9 year old son that was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in january of 2005. Since then he has been admitted to the hospital eighttimes for DKA. I keep wondering is there something that I have might have done to make my son keep having DKA. Can someone share some light on me with this?
Avatar n tn Generally, hydration and cooling are your only treatment options. There is no essential difference in treatment of heat exhaustion or heat stroke between a diabetic and non-diabetic. As far as heat goes, encouraging hydration is the best way to prevent the problem. Salt tablets are issued in the military, but that is a decision for your medical director.
Avatar n tn If the person is still in their honeymoon stage, DKA is less likely to happen because their pancreas is still producing some insulin. It could also be the type of insulin regimen he's on. You are more likely to get DKA when you are on a pump as opposed to being on injections where you are taking a long acting insulin as well as a fast acting. DKA can also be avoided because of the person's particular metabolism. And sometimes DKA doesn't happen for no apparent reason at all.
Avatar n tn This is why hospitals usually hospitalize diabetic children who have ketones showing in their urine (which shows that they are in this condition). It is not something that doctors can leave alone and give more insulin and hope it will improve. It requires constant monitoring and quick medical attention to protect the child. Some people fall into this condition more easily than others, for some reason.
Avatar n tn If your skin is sweet fruity smelling and you have full-blown, uncorrected diabetes it can lead to ketoacidosis [DKA], the body has little or no insulin. DKA if left untreated can lead to diabetic coma or death. If your levels are within acceptable ranges you need to get blood work performed as there are a number of disorders which can cause a fruity/sweet smell on the skin.

Avatar n tn I ended up in full DKA and in ICU. With hemoglobin levels at over 11 I totally had to change my life and insulin plan. Now finally my levels have stabilized and I am on the right track again. This is my small success story. If I can do it any one can. Sorry for your losses due to your miscarriages. I wish you much luck on your journey.
Avatar n tn This type of hypoglycemia does not lead to diabetes.

Avatar f tn about blood sugars in the 800s, and your husband seems to be in denial of the results of extremely high blood sugars. I don't think cinnamon is a safe recommendation for someone with high enough blood sugars to have ketones and at risk for DKA. DKA can be a life threatening emergency.
Avatar f tn Ketones are a byproduct from the use of fat as fuel. Fat breakdown increases as less glucose becomes available due to a lack of insulin. When someone's urine or blood shows large amounts of ketones, this can lead to Diabetic Ketoacidosis or DKA. This is a life-threatening emergency which occurs when blood sugars have been consistenly over 300.
Avatar m tn I, too, am on an insulin pump and ended up in the hospital last week in the ICU for DKA (1st and, hopefully, only time). I was taken off my pump, given IV insulin, fluids, and then placed on daily injections until yesterday (over a little more than a week). I started on a new pump as injections (minimum of 5 per day) do not work best for my blood sugars. It turns out there may have been a malfunction with my insulin pump. I have been in normal ranges since going back on a new one.
Avatar n tn Does anyone else struggle with nor taking insulin to lose weight? I'm 19, had my pancreas removed at birth and have been struggling to take insulin since the age of 12. Its so difficult and I'm constantly in hospital for dka. I just want to know if there's anyone out there who is having the same sort of issues.
Avatar n tn I've had diabetes since I was 10. I am now 20. This past year I think I've had the most problems with my pump. I use the paradigm. I've been getting motor errors as well as NO Delivery. But in the past week I have had DKA probably 4 times, but not bad enough to go to the hospital . My sites have been bending so that I don't receive the insulin. I use the 6mm.
Avatar n tn Running out of insulin is very dangerous for someone who is insulin dependent. Running very high numbers for a period of time can cause you to go into DKA. It's not as common in type 2's as type 1's but it can happen. There is nothing you can use that substitutes for insulin. Can you borrow money from someone? Perhaps your doctor has some he can provide or your pharmacy will give you credit? Is there a free clinic that can help you?
Avatar f tn I actually did have two more clots that showed up after I was on warfarin for the first dvt in my leg. when I got out of the hospital, I first had pain/swelling in my arm, ultrasound confirmed a superficial clot there which was caused by 3 attempts to place a new iv in my arm while I was in the icu in dka. The clot oddly didn't show up until I did some exercise. Then a week later I had pain in the other leg, swelling and swelling in the ankle.
Avatar f tn My daugther has had Type 1 diabetes since she was 7. She was under control until she got to her teen years. She did not want the pump, but refuses to take care of herself. As her teen years progressed things just got worse and worse. She's 18 now, and has been dka in the hospital 12 times in a year, as a matter of fact she's in the hosptial now. On top of that she is type 1 bipolar. We've had her in counseling, but she refuses to stick with it.
Avatar n tn Hello. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. As a fasting blood glucose result, 80 is on the low end of the ok range, but it is in the ok range. If your daughter will develop diabetes, or just hypoglycemia, there is nothing known that you can do to prevent it. You can keep your family, daughter included, more healthy through exercise and a better diet with more fruits and grains, for example, but that won't stop hypoglycemia in your daughter.
Avatar n tn After further thought, no exercise over 250 mg/dl comes to mind if ketones are present in the urine because you will further increase ketones in your blood which then may lead to DKA [diabetic ketoacidosis]. DKA can lead to serious health consequences such as coma.
Avatar f tn I had my dvt while in the icu. I was in dka which cause it. when this happened I had a bowel blockage which I think caused the dvt. I was having some pain using the walker to go to bathroom, I also had some pain in my feet. Then when I was released I had pain and couldn't put pressure on my leg. The nurse said it was due to low potassium and gave me more pills to take( I had had very low potassium in dka and it was still low. (NO!!!) What an idiot!!!
