Hypoglycemia alcohol

Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia alcohol

hypoglycemia

Avatar n tn Dear melgonzales64, i am a diabetic like you and not a doctor or medical professional. Alcohal has many different effects on diabetics which is why the American Diabetes Association recomends diabetics only drink two drinks a day. If you take insulin for the alcohol it will just lower your blood sugar since alcohol doesn't need insulin for it to be digested.
Avatar n tn I have had a problem with binge drinking for about 6 years, and my long binges would send me into terrible episodes of hypoglycemia. But I have since slowed my drinking down substantially, yet any amount of alcohol now seems to give me blood sugar issues, in different extremes. Could my binge drinking have made my liver more sensitive, to the point where I'll most likely have to abstain completely from alcohol?
Avatar n tn Most doctors therefore suggest that all diabetics drink only small amounts of alcohol. Hypoglycemia can kill within hours if nobody finds the person, or if the person is just assumed to be drunk and nobody takes his or her inability to function seriously. 2. Cane sugar IS 'normal' sugar. You need to know what the carb content is in any food or drink, not just how much sugar and what kind of sugar is in it.
Avatar n tn I have spells where i get light headed. Sometimes at night i have deep sweats. I usually wake up tired and groggy. When i drink alcohol i get really bad hang overs, even if i only have a couple. I've done some research and i could possible have low blood suger (hypoglycemia). This morning i woke up very dizzy. It has lasted all day and i have periods when i feel nausious as well. Any thoughts?
Avatar f tn Does anyone have any information on the possible correlation between alcoholism and hypoglycemia/diabetes? I've been doing research online, and came across an article that stated there is something about low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) that triggers something in your brain that causes you to crave alcohol. I've always worried about developing diabetes from excessive drinking. Then I remembered that my sister is hypoglycemic.
Avatar m tn i was tested for diabetes, and my results were 76 1st hr 81 then 43 3rd hr, they say i have hypoglycemia ? i didnt feel any symptoms when i left.......
Avatar n tn I agree there is a good chance of hypoglycemia as well, since you are no longer creating the sugar spikes from the alcohol. However, it is best to detox from alcohol under medical supervision, because it is the most dangerous, life-threatening of all withdrawal processes. It can also be managed more comfortably and quickly with medical assistance, because things like vitamin deficiency and hypoglycemia will also be treated.
Avatar f tn I am down to about 2 glasses of wine a week. Alcohol would beat the crap out of me and I could not recover for days. I know make my own Kombucha which has little alcohol, so I drink alot of that.
Avatar n tn In the short term, please avoid alcohol. Given your experiences, adding alcohol to the mix sounds deadly to me. That likely won't have to be a lifelong avoidance, but alcohol will certainly worsen any lows you get, and they sound very bad already. I am not a physician, but from what I've learned about hypoglycemia, it is very important to include protein (tho' that protein can surely come from plants) in your diet.
Avatar n tn In addition, drinking makes a diabetic more prone to dangers of severe hypoglycemia. This is because alcohol consumption causes the body to lose its ability to release emergency sugars stored in the liver to protect you some from hypoglycemia when glucose levels begin to drop. Alcohol use also will diminish your awareness of the symptoms of hypoglycemia so you may not know your glucose levels are dropping.
1034736 tn?1319559035 Increased insulin levels can cause hypoglycemia. Excessive alcohol intake, hepatitis, kidney disease, certain medications, disorders of adrenal gland etc can all cause hypoglycemia. It can also be caused by poor eating patterns. Rarely is it caused by insulin secreting tumors called insulinomas. These can secrete huge amounts of insulin after food and a person can suffer from hypoglycemia despite eating. You need to consult an endocrine specialist.
Avatar f tn Hello and welcome to MedHelp. While the other have already provided you with excellent answers I wanted to also mention low blood sugar: Alcohol Metabolism Alcohol is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and metabolized through several pathways. The majority of alcohol metabolism takes place in the liver, which is also the primary location of glucose production.
Avatar n tn Hi, I did drink far too much in my 20s to mid 30s or so, and I lowered my intake a great deal sometime in my mid to late 30s.I am now 44. About two years back I would have occasional attacks in the upper belly at night, once in a blue that were excruciating. They woudl die down and nothing more happened. I also had been chronically worrying for literally YEARS, and having "butterflies" in the tummy all the time.
Avatar m tn so, i've heard lots of things about diabete's with marijuana or alcohol, so now i want some facts. i've heard that alcohol can make your blood sugar go low but i thought it turned into sugar very fast so it would make my blood sugar high? i've allso heard of people going low while smoking marijuana, which could be because they have had a over dose. or is the weed causing this? this information would be helpfull before i try marijuana for safety resons.
Avatar n tn Overall, dehydration would only concern me as a possible cause of brain damage if alcohol were used to excess (non stop) for many days by an experienced drinker.
Avatar n tn s glucose and can result in very severe hypoglycemia is one is drinking heavily. The reason for the risk of severe hypoglycemia is that, normally, over livers will help out when we're low -- The liver will cause glycogen stores to be converted to glucose in an attempt to raise our blood sugar. When we have alcohol in our systems, however, our liver will first deal with that "toxin" ... since the liver "sees" alochol as a poison to get processed out.
Avatar n tn I experience drunken like behavior when I am hypoglycemic and having problems with frequent low sugars. Make sure he tests his sugars at least 4 times a day and when he experiences symptoms. Have him eat protein with his carbohydrates so that he does not have abrupt drops in glucose levels. Tell him if he wants to prevent lows to cut out the alcohol. Alcohol can cause or impair someone's ability to realize that they are going low.
757137 tn?1347196453 I have long believed that most alcoholism was not a psychological problem, but a physical one related to hypoglycemia. Some years ago I had occasion to test my theory on a friend of mine who had become an alcoholic. She had all the signs of a hypoglycemic, the most notable being sugar cravings. (She was, by the way, very slender.) She told me she went on her biggest binges when she got out of rehab. I found out that in rehab they replace alcohol with lots of sugary foods.
Avatar n tn I struggle with palpitations - an intense pounding in my chest and a rise in pulse AFTER eating. Yes, I've had a full cardiac workup and been told that the heart is not the cause. Heart monitors confirmed that my pulse rises anywhere from 30 min. to a couple of hours after eating and can stay there for hours, but the monitors also show that the palps are the symptom of something else and not caused by the heart.
Avatar n tn Can drinking alcohol in large amounts cause hypoglycemia , which a person is unaware of any symptoms and also causes memory loss and aggressive behavior? My son is diabetic and drinks every day, to excess, eats too much and has very high blood sugars, sometimes 500. He then drinks and his sugar falls, but at about 150 he feels begins to feel ill and says he feels hypoglycemic. Can this be true with such a high blood sugar reading? Thank you. My son is 25 years old.
Avatar f tn There are two things you should avoid: alcohol and high-fat foods. For people with cirrhosis, regardless of the cause, alcohol should be completely avoided. And, diets high in fat for people with cirrhosis may cause potential digestion problems. The body digests (breaks down) fats using bile, which is a yellow-green fluid made in the liver. When the liver is damaged, the production and supply of bile may be affected.
Avatar n tn Since your symptoms come and go, there are two main possibilities. One is hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. The other is severe acidity.
Avatar n tn Anxiety, low calcium levels, drinking caffeine and alcohol all can lead to shakiness and jitteriness. Palpitations or fluttering in chest can be due to digestive problems. Hypoglycemia can cause tremors and jittery feeling. Take good sleep and stay away from stress. Your doctor can test you further for health conditions that may cause your symptoms. Take care and regards!
