Avatar n tn What has anyone been able to taper to, a calcium channel blocker. Or does one need to stay on a beta blocker for life since the heart has become dependent on it?
Avatar m tn Your concern is valid in that being on both a calcium channel blocker and a beta blocker can have risks of reducing the heart rate too low or affecting other conducting regions of the heart. However, amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker whose primary effect is more peripherally acting rather (as compared to the non-dihydropyridine CCB, i.e. diltiazem or verapamil, which are more centrally acting).
Avatar m tn Hello, I'm 45yo.caucasian male.Height 173 cm, Weight 68 kg.2,5 months ago I started taking Lodoz 2,5 mg (bisoprolol with diuretic), blood persure before taking medicine was approximately 160/100. The medicine was prescribed in the same dose by general practice doctor 2,5 months ago . In the meantime I did ultrasound of the heart and the result seems to be OK. as wel as EKG.
Avatar n tn Beta-1 and Beta-2. Those in the heart are mostly Beta-1; those in the lungs, mostly Beta-2. Beta-blockers come in 2 forms: selective and non-selective. Selective beta-blockers, such as metoprolol, act primarily on the Beta-1 receptors in the heart. Non-selective beta-blockers, such as propranolol act on both types of receptors, in both heart and lungs. Propranolol and other medicines in its class are capable of evoking bronchospasm in people with asthma.
Avatar f tn My doc has put me on bp meds, with beta blocker for my pulse (has been racing. around 80 - 90), and also put me on hydrochlorothiazide for water retention. Is this high of blood pressure and pulse normal because of my pcos? I am overweight, 230 lbs, 5' 7". But I walk 2 1/2 miles 3 to 5 days a wk. I have retained water for years, which i always figured was from my pcos. No one in my family has bp problems. I take 2000 mg a day of metformin.
Avatar f tn Sounds like you tried most classes of high BP meds. Benicar is an ARB, which I take, that works by helping your arteries stay more flexible to help absorb each beat. Lisinopril is a beta blocker which works by slowing your heart rate. It's odd that both of these causes a symptom like sinus issues as each works differently. Hydrochlorothiazide is just a water pill that lowers BP by removing fluid from your system which will lower BP.
Avatar m tn HI. Yes. Atenolol is a beta blocker that, while lowering bp, lowers heart rate as well. Going off atenolol without being weaned (even sometimes WHILE being weaned), your heart rate will be higher in a lot of cases. If it doesn't go back to normal within a month or so, please let your doctor know. 85-95 is still within normal limits, but I know that it can be uncomfortable for some.
Avatar f tn Alot of women have to take blood pressure meds while pregnant, the key is to be monitored close while on them. I am on Atenolol 10mg which is a beta blocker and so far all is well. You should see a maternal, fetal medicine specialist, and make sure your cardio output and gestational age match, just call your OB!
280234 tn?1532986249 Hello, Labetalol is the beta blocker of choice in pregnancy. Other BP meds safe to use during pregnancy include Methyldopa, Nifedipine and in some cases Hydrochlorothiazide. You can talk to your obstetrician about these options. Additionally, you should talk with your obstetrician about the risks of developing pre-eclampsia (toxemia), placental complications (e.g., abruption), preterm birth and fetal growth restriction as a result of having pre-existing hypertension. Best regards, Dr.
Avatar f tn I have consulted several MDs, who are good friends of mine, and got different views on the possibilities of adding a Calcium Channel Blocker, e.g. Norvasc, to the Beta Blocker (Tenormin) that I'm taking right now. One suggested adding 2.5 mg Norvasc to the 100 mg Tenormin; another thought it would be a good idea to reduce the tenormin to 50 mg and take 5 mg of Norvasc; and the third, suggested to gradually replace the tenormin by 5 mg Norvasc, and to be increased if needed, to 10 mg.
Avatar n tn Hi - 49yo male in otherwise good health, had an mi and placement of 3 stents in RCA. Was told that there was no damage to my heart, and have returned to all activity including hi-intensity workouts (which I was doing pre-mi). I've put on about 30 "pity-pounds" (from 185 to 215) and despite increase in exercise and near-saintly eating habits, having a hard time losing. I suspect that Toprol is causing this problem.
Avatar m tn m making some good progress without any medication at all, just with counseling and reading. But, maybe if a beta blocker would help with the generalized day-in/day-out 24/7 anxiety I should try it. Just seeing if anyone has any experience with beta blockers. I am doing great battling the full-blown panic attacks but I still have constant anxiety. Oh, and I'm not sure which beta blocker my doctor sent in a prescription for. Thanks!
675923 tn?1296238011 I saw your post and just wanted to chime in. It's unusual that her doctor would put her on a beta blocker for anxiety. I haven't heard that before. From what I know about beta blockers, there usually used for hypertension/high blood pressure. I take a beta blocker for hypertension and and first I did have some mood swings but after awhile it went away. I just got back to my normal happy go lucky self. I would ask the doctor exactly why he chose to use a beta blocker to treat anxiety.
Avatar f tn My doctor wanted me to take a beta blocker for migranes and for a recently found Mitral Valve Prolapse. The valve prolapse was really never an issue. I don't usually have negative symptoms from the mitral valve prolapse. Although the last five years of chest discomfort and fluttering during panic attacks could have been from the prolapse and not from just anxiety. Does the beta blocker keep my heart from getting worse?
Avatar f tn I have stopped the omeprazole so I reckon this makes you correct in that the beta blockers must be the culprit. As I was on a different beta blocker to you, I assume most will give us the same symptoms, but it's worth asking your GP for Omeprazole or something similar. I was only taking 20mg every morning.
Avatar m tn please help me to tell about in following list of medicines which is the beta blocker medicine. 1. imdur 30 2. eplinice 25 3. a to z 4. s numlo 5 5. deplatt a 75 6. censpram plus 7. omez 8. mucinac 600 9. niftas 100 10. cranpac d 11. veltam .2 12. dutas .5 13. dovas 14. absolut 3g 15. onglyza 2.5 16. diamicron xr-mex 500 17. inj. ryzodeg 18. inj. spart 19.
Avatar n tn My cardiologist recommended I get on metropolol. My blood pressure, cholesterol and pulse are all normal and I have no chest pains, shortness of breath or other heart problem symptoms. My EKG showed some irregularity, and an ultrasound showed mild Plaqueing in one carotid artery. I have read that once you start a beta blocker you're on it for the rest of your life. Also, there can be some pretty serious side effects. Any thoughts?
Avatar f tn Have you had a recent medical checkup? What has your doctor said about your general health? I take a beta blocker and that keeps my HR in an acceptable range, but I don't have shortness of breath, nor palps.
Avatar f tn Well that is not encouraging. I am on my second type of beta blocker because the first would lower my BP too much. The 1 day I had to stop them to allow my BP get back up, my heart rate shot up and stayed up all day long. It was horrible, like I am having a heart attack all day long. I just don't understand how this just suddenly happened. I am hoping the new beta blocker will work, but it still has side affects that are bothersome too.
Avatar m tn If she exhibits allergy to one beta blocker, she is likely to be allergic to the rest of them. Anyways, an allergist may be able to guide you. Good luck.
Avatar f tn I am a severe-persistent asthmatic, and I take a cardio-selective beta blocker called Toprol XL. Though I was not able to tolerate another cardio-selective beta blocker called Atenolol. Other asthma patients may have similar, or opposite experiences. Still others may have no negative responses at all to beta blockers, or be entirely intolerant of them. It really depends on the patient.
Avatar f tn I have to take a beta blocker . All beta blockers cause depresion and anxiety....I know this. My doctor prescribed Lexapro to help with the depression / anxiety cause by the metoprolol beta blocker. Has anyone else taken Lexapro for drug induced depression and has it helped ? The beta blocker has caused severe depression and anxiety. I need something to help me to get out of this hole and depression that I"m in.
Avatar m tn after having a-fib---then finding out i had a leaky mitral valve which needed repairing-----( i did not have any blockages ) my doctor put me on a beta blocker (metoprolol)----I feel great most of the time---the only thing I notice is when I have to exert myself for a few seconds ( like runing and playing with my dog or walking fast up a steep incline ) I have to stop because of lack of wind and feel exhausted----would this be considered a side effect of beta blockers
