Humalog insulin diabetes

Common Questions and Answers about Humalog insulin diabetes

humalog

Avatar m tn Is it common for someone with type 2 diabetes to be on Humalog 3X daily and Lantus 1X daily?
Avatar n tn I just wanted to add the explanation for why we need both. The book, "Think like a pancreas" is aptly named because that is what we try to do with our insulin usage. We are trying to mimic the action of the pancreas in people who don't have diabetes. Their bodies have a low level of background insulin all the time and that's why we take our basal which lasts 24 hours (sometimes not so we split the dose).
Avatar m tn Humalog is a fast acting insulin. Typically it is taken before meals - up to 15 minutes before (not after) to match the amount of carbs eaten. It's duration of action is 3 - 5 hours, with most of the action in the first 2 hours. You need to work out a carb:insulin ratio (ie. how much Humalog you need to cover how much carbs/ protein). If you are going low overnight (how low?), then you need to be taking a lower dose of Humalog with your evening meal. What time do you eat dinner?
Avatar n tn Hi Jimmy, Premixed insulin requires you to eat on a fixed schedule, and you cannot easily change your insulin dose. Separate dosing of Lantus (long acting) and Humalog (short acting) where you inject each insulin separately (also called MDI for multi daily injections) is much more flexible. You test and adjust your basal insulin (lantus), then you dose your fast acting for each meal based on how much food / carbs/ protein you eat.
Avatar f tn t have to take such high amounts of humalog. Is there a medical problem managing or risk in managing his Type 1 diabetes the way he is doing it? What can I say to him? He goes to an internist and not an endocrinologist.
Avatar n tn I use a sliding scale of Humalog at mealtimes and I use 14 units of Lantis each evening. Lantis is a 24 cylce insulin or a long acting insulin where Humalog is short term or short acting insulin. But this just shows you that different people have different needs. Before I used Lantis I used to use NPH-which is a shorter long acting inuslin-more like 8 hours. Have you tried giving your Novolin before you eat?
Avatar f tn I have been diabetic for ten years now and have been taking lantus and humalog this whole time. Well a new doctor Im seeing took me off lantus due to the fact that it could cause my twins to become insulin resistant. She has me taking more of the humalog but it doesn't seem to be helping me and now i have a harder time controlling my sugar where before i kept it pretty well controlled. Should i get a second opinion or does anyone have suggestions?
Avatar n tn I know this is different for everyone - but generally, what is the ratio for the # of mg/dml units dropped by 1 unit of insulin. Like Humalog U100 R. Does anyone know? Lilly (the mfg. of Humalog) said that they didn't have those numbers (I didn't believe that). Just curious. I asked a Diabetes Trainers from my hospital and she didn't have an idea either.
Avatar m tn I just started on Lantus and Humalog and my blood sugars seem to keep going up, I take 30 U at night Lantus and I take Humalog 10 before meals if my bs is 180 or higher, does this sound right, I was diagnosed a Type 2 about 6 years ago, but the Glipizide and Metformin I was taking has been stopped, but my fasting bs has been 270 or higher any suggestions I know control my diet I get that, I also weigh 239 my Dr's say to loose weight, and I am going to try.
Avatar n tn I am wondering if anyone else has to change sites so often, and whether it could be the insulin (humalog)? We love the flexibility and precision of the pump, but this has been difficult.
Avatar f tn NPH is a very old form of insulin. Also giving a sliding scale for her bolus, Humalog is an outdated way of dosing. More current is using an insulin:carb ratio so that the dose is geared to the carbs she is eating. I would suggest you take your daughter to an endo and ask to have her placed on the more up to date treatment regimen of a long-acting basal, which would be either Lantus or Levemir, and bolus such as the Humalog with a dose determined by insulin:carb ratio.
10443766 tn?1410724207 I was on metformin lantus and humalog then they took me off metformin and changed to levimer and humalog. My Dr made me a high risk patient so I get more visits. Its harder because I need to test more but its worth it. My Dr is also very curious on my body and my baby though because once I begay second trimester insulin made my sugars spike (600+) and ice cream, cake, candy etc would make me low (75-90) so I haven't been able to take my insulin.
Avatar n tn I am not sure what you mean, but if you were given instructions to use this pen, it means you have diabetes and have to take insulin for it. Your diabetes nurse educator will help you learn how to use the pen and set your insulin dose. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar n tn So anyway I was wondering, When I go out with my friends and eat ice cream or something like, right now the sugar peaks way before my humalog, but what if I injected my humalog into muscle tissue, so it was absorbed rapidly. I think this would better match the peak of the sugar. Lets say im eating on an empty stomach so it is absorbed very fast. Has anyone tried this or done something like this before?
Avatar n tn My daughter is currently on the insulin pump and only goes on Lantus/Humalog when her pump is malfunctioning. Thankfully (for us), this hasn't happened in so long that I cannot remember what the formula is to calculate the lantus. I do remember that prior to going on the pump, her endocrinologist switched her lantus shot from AM to PM as her morning bg's were higher than they wanted them.
Avatar n tn Also, I am sure you have also heard of other insulin types such as lantus and humalog. You see, as I mentioned my boy recently went on the pump. Well, my sister (who starts the pump this Friday!), is currently on lantus (she takes a shot at bedtime) and then humalog for a correction, as well as humalog to cover what she eats.
Avatar n tn There are so many factors with diabetes that can affect how insulin works in your body and it is sometimes difficult to figure out whether the problem is the insulin or some other factor. Extreme heat or cold can impact the effectivess of insulin. The injection site can sometimes be a factor in absorption of the insulin and ultimate impact on blood sugar.
Avatar n tn I know our readings are different in canada , 5 to 7 is normal.I have had sugars as high as 32 and used 10 units of humalog , half an hour later I am 34 , I don't understand this ? What is the ratio of humalog to carbs ? I had the flu and I know it can really mess up your sugars , but this was a month ago .Also , I generally feel better when my sugars are around 13 , anything below that and I feel the efects of hyperglycemea , I know that does,t make sense , but it is how I feel.
Avatar n tn I give myself about 21 units of insulin per day--13 units of Lantus and a sliding scale of Humalog between 6-10 units--depending on how many carbohydrates I have eaten--So, it takes me about 2-3 months to use a bottle of Humalog and the Lantus would take longer, but I must open a new bottle every month for consistency issues. Does that help?
1554089 tn?1294855456 Humalog is insulin lispro, a rapid/fast acting blood glucose lowering agent. Humalog 75/25 is a mixture of insulin lispro solution [75] and insulin lispro protamine suspension [25], an intermediate-acting blood glucose lowering agent. Call your doctor's office for an explanation as to why you were put on fast acting alone.
Avatar m tn I don't see how you could have been a type I diabetic. Your after eating blood sugar is not high. Your fasting blood sugar is a little high. What does your doctor say? Are you sure you weren't a type II diabetic?
Avatar n tn com/health/drugs/humalog#humalog-vs-novolog Often Humalog is given with other medication along with it. You may need that approach.
Avatar n tn You may also want to try a faster acting fast acting insulin other than Humalog. Novolog begins acting slightly faster than Humalog. You could also consider taking your fast acting insulin sooner, so that it is already in your system when you eat. That can help because of the speed with which your food is now absorbed. Organ damage is caused by poor management or lack of management of diabetes over years and years, so you shouldn't be all that concerned yet. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Anyone out there had to go on insulin in pregnancy? This is my first baby since getting diabetes 4 yrs ago but scared of needles. Had miscarriage in feb just praying this don't happen again.
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Insulin glargine is also known as Lantus. Lantus, just like all insulins, can stimulate the body into causing fat production, so it is possible to gain weight on Lantus.
