Common Questions and Answers about How to overcome fear of open water swimming

fear

Avatar f tn My advice would be to gradually start exposing yourself to that fear. For instance just swimming a very short distance the first day (then monitoring how you feel) then gradually build it up from there. I think they call it exposure therapy or something. Please don't avoid swimming altogether as you will feed that fear to such an extent that you will feel anxious anytime you go near the water.

Avatar n tn I have developed a fear of heights that has interfered with my ability to enjoy my favorite winter sport...snow skiing. The anxiety produced when confronted with height creates what is near panic. The fear only exhibits itself primarily on the ground and outside.. I do not have a fear of flying in a jet airplane or inside tall buildings. It has become a real problem for me to enjoy skiing.

Avatar m tn The World of Sports Science website describes how swimming requires your muscles to overcome frontal resistance, skin friction and eddy resistance. You have to power through water turbulence and the drag you create, so weightlifting is important in supplementing the cardio. You should work the major arm and leg muscles, plus the hip, gluteal, lumbar and abdominal muscles because they all assist in rotating and stabilizing your body in the water.
Avatar f tn At the end of each swimming lesson, I used to put a special eye ointment in my eyes to get rid of the stinging sensation. After swimming in the swimming pool and after you have changed back into your street clothes, take your bathing suit and rinse it really well under a tap. This will remove some of the chlorine. I suspect it is the chlorine that is causing the itchy red spots on your body.
Avatar f tn You can seek help from a professional counselor to overcome your irrational fears. Also, there is an anxiety forum on this website, you could post there to discuss about your options.

Avatar f tn Of course it's safe. Once your water breaks obviously it would be a bad idea. But as long as it's fresh running water, not brackish or gross, go for it. I can't wait until the river beach in my town is open for the season so I can go every day until I deliver! I'd much rather be in fresh water than in a pool filled with nasty chemicals.
Avatar f tn My mom is getting her pool ready and I was worried about if it'd be ok. So i'm glad I came across this.
Avatar f tn Have you tried focused slow breathing, walking, aromatherapy, acupuncture, massage, redirect by doing something? Also...low Vitamin D3 and magnesium can contribute to anxiety and depression.
Avatar f tn To overcome anxiety, one must understand the logic of why the brain is feeling threatened, it sends messages to the body saying its under threat. New pathways need to be created to overcome the old programming. So for example, if you panic over a fear of flying, you must start flying and let the brain realise that its all okay, and reprogram the thoughts. However, the fear of dying can't really be practiced. Some buddhists meditate in a morgue as it is the closest we can get to dying.

461838 tn?1255790216 There will be plenty of time to get back in shape after I overcome this virus. (I have cirrhosis so it is important for me to do what I can now to stop the advancing of this disease). I say more power to you if you can find the reserves inside of yourself to workout. If you can continue to do the things you did before starting treatment I’m sure that will be good for you. For myself I'm satisfied to be progressing week by week through my treatment.
Avatar f tn Then you begin problem solving with him and suggesting things encouraging him to add to it. The whole time--- speak of how he can make himself feel better so he sees that by learning these things he can do will result in his feeling better. Things you can suggest------ is that when he feels the fear starting--- he can stop and take some deep breaths. He can do square breaths (breath in for 4, hold 4, breath out for 4, hold 4, repeat).
Avatar m tn their is no chance of HIV without condom breakage...to overcome your fears ...take a test....taking a test can come out of fear 99% than googing...
Avatar f tn Even if your Dr. Can feel babies head, that would when she inserts finger into cervix to check dilation. Hubby will not be in contact with baby. Unless your water has broken or your Dr has given some other reason not to, there is no reason you can't have sex (unless you and hubby just don't feel into it). One reason sex helps dilation has to do with something in the semen (forget what) that you can also use evening primrose oil to simulate.
Avatar m tn I am afraid I stepped on a syringe(iI know you are thinking this is crazy but yea damn OCD) I know this fear is ocd but I am trying to think of facts to confront this fear with,it worked with fear of HIV and oral sex.
Avatar f tn Swimming is super good at helping! It takes the weight of baby off of you and can cause you to dilate which will help start labor! If I had a suit, I'd be swimming now too! I'm at 39+1 and its perfect swimming weather by me! I say if you can, try it out! If it doesn't help with labor it'll help relax you that's for sure!
